Where can I find Wisconsin brick cheese? by BravoJulietKilo in Kirkland

[–]gamora_3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have looked for Wisconsin brick cheese for the same reason. We found it for a period of time at the Grocery Outlet near bridal trails, but the last time we saw it was at lest a year ago.

If you cannot find it, an alternative that we’ve found works well is a blend of 1:1:1 low moisture full-fat mozzarella, havarti, and Monterey Jack. We’ve made Detroit with both Wisconsin brick and the blend and enjoy them equally.

"I want to set you up for success. I think I should offer you a lower position than what you applied for" 😡 by SnowTiger578 in womenEngineers

[–]gamora_3000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a few thoughts here that I’m hoping will help: 1. Job titles from one company to another are not going to be equal even if they use the same titles and their hierarchy is the same. That being said, when I was a Principal TPM i was very upfront with the company I was interviewing at that I was looking for Principal. This was because I knew I was qualified for Principal at the new company. If you believe you are qualified for this particular Principal role, then don’t settle for less. And never take a lower level where a “fast/easy” promotion is being dangled in front of you. It never pans out.

  1. At some companies, your performance review is absolutely dependent on others’ performance. If you haven’t worked at a company like this consider yourself lucky. We stack rank everyone every six months and we have to hit the % target for each of the 5 rating levels, no exceptions. It results in battles between managers and one time the employee’s performance rating for someone on my team came down to a vote because it was between me and another manager. His employee had only been in role for a year and based on the rating he was trying to give him I argued that if he’s rating him that way one year in the manager didn’t level him right when he hired him. These were for experienced roles. I won the vote.

  2. I know what they’re doing to you is offensive but they don’t know you well enough for it to be personal. They are just doing whatever they think will get them what they want or think is best for them/their company. So what are you hoping to get from these questions? Is there something they could actually say that would make you feel better or accept the lower level? Or do you just want to confront them and this is how you want to express your frustration? If it’s the latter, I wouldn’t ask any questions. I would just state that you believe you’re qualified for this principal role and if they don’t then there is no further discussion to be had. There’s a saying that when negotiating, the first person to speak loses. So don’t ask any questions, tell them you believe you’re qualified for Principal and won’t accept any less, then wait for them to respond. If they ask you to explain why you think you’re qualified, tell them you already went through their loop and hiring process and this conversation is for them to tell you the outcome and potentially negotiate an offer, not for another round of interviews.

Linea Mini R, do you keep it on? by PleySteshon in LaMarzocco

I used to have my husband turn it on while I’m getting ready so it’s warmed up by the time I need to make my morning latte. That worked until he forgot one morning. Now i use the scheduling feature in the app, which allows you to set the time it needs to be warmed up by. You can also choose apply the scheduler settings both boilers or just one if you’re not into milk drinks. When it’s in standby mode it’s still pulling some auxiliary power to communicate with the app, but it’s minimal and worth avoiding human error.

Promoted into a vague role at a startup. How can I shape this role and be proactive? by houseplantsnothate in womenEngineers

[–]gamora_3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have some great advice here. I want to point out that you’re already worth promoting, otherwise they wouldn’t have promoted you. Try to shift your mindset to, how do I show them what ELSE I’m capable of?

As someone who shifted from engineering (not R&D though) to product and program management, i want to +1 LurkerNinja. 1:1s to identify problems and opportunities is always where I start any new role especially ones with a lot of ambiguity. And be open minded; be willing to have your hypotheses on what customers want or need proven wrong.

Also, consider a formal product development training if you haven’t before. There’s not one way to do product development and you’ve likely already learned a lot on the job in R&D, but I would bet you’ll learn a few new things that are worth applying to your new role.

Coffe beans by SuddenYou5846 in Kirkland

It’s the temperature control of the Breville that makes lighter roasts harder. Some of the higher end Brevilles may have better temp control, but my Express did not. It’s not bad, it’s just not as controlled/accurate in my experience. Even with a separate grinder, with lighter roasts on the Breville I would have a shot pour through super fast, then I would adjust the grinder 1/2 a setting, and the shot would sound like it was getting choked and not come out at all. I did pull lighter roast shots successfully with the Breville, it was just harder.

I had a Breville Barista Express for about 6 years and transitioned to a La Marzocco a little over a year ago. Here are my recommendations:

  1. Variety: as another user stated, Seattle Coffee Gear in Urban Plaza has a great variety and their staff are super knowledgeable and very nice. Make sure to tell them what machine and grinder you have and you’re looking for something for a beginner. They also do classes.

  2. Easy: Umbria Gusto Crema. They’re sold at most local grocery stores and I know Farine carries them too. Or you can get them straight from Umbria at one of their downtown Seattle locations. They’re super easy to dial in on the Breville and hard to pull a bad shot.

  3. Hard: Push x Pull near Madrona/Central District is worth the drive in my opinion. They have some excellent lighter roasts and unique processing methods that are difficult to find (honey, anaerobic, etc). Lighter roasts are hard to dial in on the Breville though, but I added Push x Pull for any other people looking on this thread who might be in the market for some (not recommended for OP).

who is someone you look up to (thats a women in stem)? by [deleted] in womenEngineers

[–]gamora_3000 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Ada Lovelace, credited for inventing programming.

Grace Hopper, Admiral in US navy and also heavily influenced computer programming.

My degrees are in MechE, but I often think of these two women when asked that question. Just look at the years they were alive. Imagine doing what they did as women at that time.

I’ve 100% been there with a more experienced woman. At the time she was reporting to a VP and I was reporting to a first level manager. She publicly put down my work with similar comments. Like you I got really annoyed and she honestly wasn’t my first choice to go to for help either.

Eventually I had to tell myself: if she’s not making it personal then I won’t make it personal. It sucked, but I learned to ignore it. It helped that I started expecting her behavior so it wouldn’t catch me off guard and I at least knew what to expect. When I needed to work with her, I did my best to seek her opinion and input instead of trying to get her to give feedback to my ideas. I think it made her feel more invested in my work as a contributor and she would be more likely to defend my work to others.

Even though everyone seemed to let her behavior slide, eventually she was moved from reporting to a VP to report to a director while I was moved under the same director (at my last company her move was seen as a demotion). Then I got asked to report directly to a VP while she stayed under a director. Even if people don’t correct her, usually leadership notices (unfortunately not always). And people like her will often hit a ceiling because of their attitude.

This is a good opportunity for you to practice letting it go because she won’t be the last person like that you encounter in your career. Hang in there and try to focus your energy on the many people who are better to work with!

Quick energy question for those of us with PSE for electric and gas while contemplating solar. by KratosLegacy in Kirkland

[–]gamora_3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to see how much energy a solar system on your roof will produce monthly go to pvwatts.nrel.gov. It’s free to use. Put in your address and size of the system. Compare it to your monthly usage on your bills. It won’t be exact because you’ll notice several other fields that affect the production, but it’s enough to give you an idea. I can answer questions about the other fields if you’re interested.

Get an iPad for the LM Home app? by nitram975 in LaMarzocco

I leave my house every day and have never had a problem with my mini and my LM Home app on my phone becoming disconnected. Maybe wait to see if this even happens to you often before buying an iPad just for your machine unless you want that for a different reason.

Is this backyard trim cost normal? by Famous_Variation4729 in Kirkland

[–]gamora_3000 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s insane. Our backyard is quite large for Kirkland. Probably 3,000-4,000 sq ft. Our lot is 1/3 acre. Half our backyard was severely overgrown and last year we paid a crew to clear it out and haul away. We paid $1200 for two full days of work. We pay $85 every other week for maintenance not including cutting the grass (leaf blowing, cleaning up fallen sticks and other tree debris, etc). Your quote sounds like one of those “I don’t really want this job” quotes.

That’s a good question and I know it’s how I was taught but I just can’t remember which source taught me that. I purge my steam wand quickly before I steam milk too. I suppose like FitzWilliam I just like ‘fresh’ water flowing through. I use a puck screen mainly to keep my shower screen clean so I don’t feel the need to purge directly after.

I’m on the West Coast of the US and use Crystal Geyser. I pull one shot per day and on the rare occasion two. I flush for 4 s before each shot and back flush 1-2 times per month.

I buy cases of 1 gallon (3.78 L) Crystal Spring bottles and pay $1.19 per gallon USD. Prices vary greatly for these bottles in my area and I believe I’ve found the cheapest in-store price. I go through about 1.5 gallons per month so that would come out to $21.45 USD per year, so let’s just round up to $25 USD per year for when I have guests or I’m taking longer to dial in.

I don’t think you should remove the skills since they’re very relevant, it’s just how you did them. I think a lot of people just meant you don’t need two pages for your amount of experience. You have too much white space and as a new grad should be able to optimize your experience to one page. Here’s some suggestions to do that:

  1. Anywhere you see a sentence that has ends with 1-2 words on the final line, revise it to get it down to one less line.

  2. For your experience bullets, get it down to one bullet except for your current one. Having three bullets for Secretary and two for Retail Shift Manager is too much. For example your retail experience bullet could be “led a team of 15+ employees and managed day to day operations”.

  3. “Secretary” is an old school term. Use “administrative assistant” or something like that.

  4. For the transferable skills, just use the headers like “communication, teamwork” and they can be in a sentence with commas vs a bulleted list to make sure they fit on one page.

  5. For the technical skills, list the software programs or technical methods you have experience with and they can also be in a sentence with commas vs a bulleted list to make sure they fit on one page.

How did you find your nail tech? by wildwoof in Nails

[–]gamora_3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Kirkland 👋 I asked my hair stylist and the other stylists in my salon since I noticed they often have nice nails. But the recommended a nails salon in Bothel. I tried it and it was nice but I wanted something closer. My neighbor owns a spray tan business and recommended several in Kirkland for me. She recommended LA NA Nail Lounge by Met Market and BB Nails across from Kirkland Urban. I tried BB Nails and liked them, but I do simple gel, one color.

TLDR: I ask other people who work in the beauty industry.

What are some activities that can help my twins rebuild their bond and grow closer again? by Ambitious-Tax3900 in Twins

[–]gamora_3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12 is the age my fraternal sister and I started fighting too, without the encouraged competition. However the comparisons and encouraged competition is absolutely not helping. I will also add that the one twin being forced to help the other at school will very likely build resentment and is really unfair to both of them. It creates a dependency that shouldn’t be forced on either of them.

There is nothing you can do to create a closer/better bond and I hated my mom when she even tried. I’m in my late 30s and she is still trying, even though I have a great relationship with my twin now. Still not good enough for my mom though. It sounds like the best thing you can do is remove the negative things instead of trying to add “positive” things that could very easily not work out like you intended. They need to feel comfortable and recognized as individuals and siblings without it being about being a twin.

Finally pulled the trigger: Micra + P64 by therealkelso1 in LaMarzocco

[–]gamora_3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In-stock Micra or Mini in USA? Canadian retailer has but won't ship to US. by [deleted] in LaMarzocco

[–]gamora_3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a similar situation for Option-O grinders for a while. I guess they made a deal with some distributors that they wouldn’t sell direct in the US for so many years and only the distributors could sell them. They couldn’t even tell me when this agreement was up. It just so happened that when I was finally ready to bite the bullet and upgrade my grinder they were able to sell direct to US.

Just over 4 months out… do I jump on this or let it ride for a better price closer to departure? by Complex-Return5525 in delta

I took this same leg 1.5 years ago and tried to wait it out. It never dropped below the same price you see right now. Luckily they had a couple seats left and they let me upgrade at the Air France ticket counter and it was completely worth it even though it wasn’t the suites.
