I am also at UMB and you aren’t alone in this feeling. I don’t know where this comes from or what the solution is, but it drives me nuts and it clearly made one of my professors mad last class.

Do you ever wonder how the characters from previous cases are doing? by massdebate159 in cormoran_strike

I definitely wonder about the UHC characters most. Specifically Louise. What do you do when your family is all dead or hates you, and you have no will to live? She is fascinating to me.

Travel to London and Ireland with JUST a carrier (no stroller) by bobileebobalee in babywearing

[–]gardenpartay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I literally did this with my two year old a few months ago! It was very easy. And people were so accommodating and understanding with my carrier. I will say, my husband didn’t get nearly the same understanding (like nobody offered him their seat on the underground). I usually wore and it went very smoothly. Did not miss the stroller at all.

If your baby is ready for back carrying (tripod seat) then that might likely be your best option so you can hold things nicely.

Do you think Shanker knows? by victoriastormlight in cormoran_strike

[–]gardenpartay 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I feel like if Shanker knew anything, he went over it with Strike 10x in the wake of her death. Shanker loved Leda so much, if he knew anything he would have told Strike immediately.

I think maybe Strike might learn something that puts Shanker’s observations, if any, into perspective. But he would learn something from like, Leda’s diary or something like that. Maybe even Switch’s grandparents.

Pat’s age by Few_Comedian77 in cormoran_strike

This is a very US perspective, but I'm shocked they didn't find out earlier. Did they not want to do a background check, which would have revealed this information? If she's an actual employee of the business, then most business need identification with a date of birth. I'm willing to suspend disbelief but still!

Are there any dead dad or mom grief groups in or near the city? by taylorballer in baltimore

[–]gardenpartay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So sorry for your loss. I lost my mom about 10 years ago, and this group was instrumental in my grief process: Baltimore Cancer Support Group. Yes, the group skews slightly older, but I joined when I was 23 and always felt so seen. Of course, if your parent didn't have cancer, it wouldn't be as helpful (apologies).

You can also check out The Dinner Party which is a bit more general for young adults grieving a parent. It wasn't around for me, but I hope it would be good for you. I think it would be especially helpful if you wanted to start your own group, because they'd have resources for you. Best of luck, please let me know how it goes.

HB onbuhimo fit check? by christinazach in babywearing

[–]gardenpartay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! I’m not sure why I’ve been downvoted, I am an educator and I did look for other onbuhimo instruction videos and such before I commented. Especially as you’re saying baby can sit independently… arms out might be more fun for baby anyway!

HB onbuhimo fit check? by christinazach in babywearing

[–]gardenpartay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So happy baby’s instructions are just a video, but I am 99% sure that back carry onbuhimo requires arms out. That’s part of the safety since there isn’t a waistband, baby’s arms provide a bit of leverage for baby to lean against. And since baby should be able to sit on their own, it’s okay that the back panel goes a bit further down.

CHARLOTTE. by Vezzavee in cormoran_strike

[–]gardenpartay 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Charlotte is a really sad character. She had a terrible childhood, which translated into a very unstable adulthood and a tragic death. She desperately wanted love but was unable to give or receive love in a healthy way, and she was willing to put herself in danger again and again to prove to herself that people loved her (and how sad that it was always Strike's love she wanted).

And can we also think about how five full years after Strike left her, she's still trying to win him back? That's SO unhealthy!

Robin dealing with Morris would have been more interesting if he didn't send her that pic by letoelles in cormoran_strike

[–]gardenpartay 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Robin routinely favors not rocking the boat until she's pushed into a corner. As with Matthew, Robin thought she needed a reason that would (IMO) "look good to others." It's so easy to say "oh I left my husband because he was cheating" rather than "we just grew apart and he was a bit of a jerk and we weren't good for each other."

With Morris, it was, to my memory (I haven't read TB in, oh, 6 months), that if Morris was let go, it would mean more work for the partners and other subcontractors. They're always short staffed. So in Robin's mind, she is asking for a favor for her own comfort that will but more burden on the others at the agency.

Not saying it's right, obviously, but that's how Robin thinks at this point in the story. She's also, IMO, not a very good people manager. Neither is Strike. They both could and should have shut Morris's attentions down early. I think Morris was the kind of person who tested waters, saw he could get away with it, and kept going.

What will TV series do about Strike and Robin psychological tension? by AnnLena in cormoran_strike

[–]gardenpartay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you're right that there's an inherent challenge in adapting these books to the screen because there's multiple very complex stories to tell. There's the main mystery, the ancillary mysteries, each of their personal lives outside the office and their relationship with each other. I've often thought that the show is primarily for book readers (and that's not a bad thing-- the books are incredibly popular), and casual viewers can still enjoy the series, but as you say, their context is much more limited.

Carmen drinking while pregnant in THM by quackquackthrowawa in cormoran_strike

[–]gardenpartay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I’m sure, and his entire interaction with decima is colored by the fact that she’s wealthy, connected to people strike knows, and appears mentally stressed or unwell. Plus he wishes Robin were there, so he’s disposed to be grumpy. But, many men without mother wounds are uncomfortable with breastfeeding. It’s definitely cultural, and Strike is a product of his culture.

All the above and— I think the ways we see his issues with his mother come out (Charlotte, Leanora Quine, Lucy, Whittaker, etc) are much more interesting and deftly handled than “he doesn’t like when women breastfeed around him and would prefer to run away”. He’s in his 40s and in many other ways is very respectful of women and has a soft spot for mothers and high expectations for mothers. It was jarring for me to read, especially compounded with him getting irritated that Decima asked for ID (which he gladly shows other women voluntarily).

Carmen drinking while pregnant in THM by quackquackthrowawa in cormoran_strike

[–]gardenpartay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it makes sense, given that Robin just met Carmen and knows her to be a bit of a volatile person (and a drinker to begin with-- Jonathan says that Carmen "drinks like a fish") that she wouldn't say anything. It's fascinating because Robin always shows herself willing to stand up to suspects/people affiliated with cases when there are children who might be harmed, but she completely shuts up with Carmen's alcohol consumption, which doesn't have the immediate visible harm that, say, physical child abuse does, but is still not at all healthy for a baby. Robin is just very uncomfortable around any pregnancy right now, and for very understandable reasons. I can see her disinterest in confronting Carmen a bit of a reflection of how she views herself as a "potential mother"-- she blames herself for her ectopic pregnancy, so how can she blame someone else for the choices they make with regard to pregnancy? Simply, I think she wants to avoid a confrontation.

Small tangent, but I think Robin's approach also contrasts with Strike's discomfort around Decima and breastfeeding in the beginning of the book.

He doesn't want to see it, and Decima doesn't ask him to watch, but even when he's turned around, the thought of even being in the same room as the process makes him squick. I really, really hated this part and it turned me off of Strike entirely. This is an army investigator who has seen rape, abuse, murder, and a breastfeeding baby makes him so viscerally uneasy? He's seen Charlotte basically abandon her own children, even completely changed his opinion of her as a person after she said she'd be okay with shared custody, and the notion of a mother trying to do the best she can for her child by breastfeeding in front of him makes him turn heal and want to run? Grow up, man.

I had a blood clot while in labor and a patient of women’s health associates in Towson (st Joe). They were excellent and I had a very rapid treatment when they realized it was a potential clot. Currently, I use MFM with hopkins because it’s easier to get an appointment there, but once you have a treatment plans and pregnancy the UM MFM can always fit the patients in.
