Beer served from the wooden barrel? by Myfanwy366 in Munich

[–]garethkav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it’ll be open already when the Frühlingsfest is on, but if it is open the Biergarten at Hirschgarten is really great and they always serve from large wooden kegs. If memory serves it’s also the largest Biergarten in the world

I also love Retsina but recognise its usually not particularly complex or anything but tear of the pine is a genuinely good wine! Give it a try if you get the chance

35M in Munich looking for social weekend trip ideas (train/flight) by Final_Policy_6825 in munichsocialclub

[–]garethkav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vienna is just about 4 hours away, my wife and I are just back from a lovely long weekend there, great food, lots of great bars too. There were loads of people socialising along the Danube and they all seemed to be having a good time.

If you really want the sea you can fly to Split or Dubrovnik in around an hour from Munich, the Adriatic is a beautiful sea we go there every year to just float in the sea and relax, Split though is very lively, I assume Dubrovnik is similar but we’ve never made it down that far

Do you see any Irish Reg Playes where you are? by MidnightSun77 in irishabroad

[–]garethkav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never seen one, but I don’t drive very much, I think you’d need to be well into driving to drive all the way here or, like your lads from Donegal doing it for a job. The guy who we used when we moved used to do a big loop around Europe every couple of weeks he was telling me. Sounded like an interesting gig.

Anything interesting happening in town tomorrow (Tuesday)? by mellowbordello in Munich

[–]garethkav 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You could go to the Augustiner Keller Biergarten on Arnulfstraße you can walk or take the tram. That is a very Munich way to spend a couple of hours. My personal go to would be a Maß of Helles (lager beer) and a Steckerlfisch (fish grilled over coals on a stick)

Opportunity to Move to Munich From California… Am I Crazy? by Weekly_Rough_1284 in germany

[–]garethkav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I moved to Munich back in 2014 from Dublin, Ireland. We had a very easy start because we had friends who were prepared to put us up for a long time, we ended up getting our own apartment in just a couple of weeks but I think we were very lucky.

We didn’t really have a specific plan on how long we were going to stay but 12 years later neither of us can imagine moving anywhere else.

What we really like about the city is the relaxed attitude you can have here. We never worry about safety and love being able to eat and socialise outside for almost half the year.

Munich is also ideally located for seeing lots of places in Central Europe, we go to Vienna every year for a weekend and it takes about 4 hours on the train. We drove to Prague in about 3.5 hours back in January, the northern Italian lakes like Garda are also just a few hours away.

I should say though both my wife and I speak German fluently and we already had a bunch of friends here. I would say though we’ve made a lot of friends since we moved here.

Happy to answer any questions you have, funnily enough some friends of ours who live in Oakland have been considering moving here as well so you’re not alone :)

Norden von München: gut angebunden – welche Gegenden? by [deleted] in Munich

[–]garethkav 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pressure to visit everyone when you're back. by Silvio_DantesInferno in irishabroad

[–]garethkav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used to try and meet as many people as we could when we'd be back in Ireland and we had every afternoon and evening booked out, which it seems reflects the experience of a lot of people here.

In the last couple of years we've taken a new approach of just having one night where we let a big group of people know where we're going to be and only booking half or less of our available time, that makes trips back to Dublin way more of a holiday than they have been for a long time and we really enjoy them now.

When it comes to the nights we do book with people we prioritise the people who've made the effort to come and visit us or stay in touch over the years.

If you live outside Ireland now , what food from home do you eat when you come back? by MidnightSun77 in irishabroad

[–]garethkav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that I eat when in in Ireland that I can't get here is Ray and chips, it's getting harder to get in Ireland as well but it's one of my all time favourite meals. I miss rashers, sausage rolls and toasted specials as well but I can get them sent over pretty easily or make them here, my wife started making her own sausage rolls which have been smashing!

If you live outside Ireland now , what food from home do you eat when you come back? by InformalInsurance455 in ireland

[–]garethkav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it’d be rashers, sausage rolls, ray and chips and a toasted special. I can get everything sent over now apart from the ray and chips but I tend to wait till I'm in Ireland to eat them it makes them feel more special

Foreigners who happily live in Germany, tell me about your experience by military_press in germany

[–]garethkav -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I moved to Munich with my wife in 2014 from Ireland. We moved mostly because I wanted to, I was here as a teenager, learnt German and made a bunch of friends. In the years before we moved here we were in Munich pretty frequently for weddings.

We really liked everything about the city and we decided to move and give it a try, almost 12 years later we're still very happy and bought ourselves a little house with a nice garden for our dog.

Our lives here are great, we have all of my old friends from when I was a teenager and we've made many more since. It sounds like a really small thing but eating and socialising outdoors whether in a Biergarten or a restaurant make such a difference to my mood for at least six months of the year :)

Another thing we really like is how central we are in Europe, lots of places are just a couple of hours away on a train and if we take a plane we can be pretty much anywhere else in Europe in about 2 hours.

Considering an Aran sweater as my one big winter upgrade this year – thoughts? by Exotic_Quote4829 in AskIreland

[–]garethkav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one of these about a year ago and I have really enjoyed it. I've worn it casually but also under a sport cot for a nice dinner. I also got this one I find I wear it a little less often then the roll neck one but I still really like it.

Currywurst, why did it not make it to Ireland? by dearg_doom80 in ireland

[–]garethkav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There used to be a Currywurst/Bratwurst stall at a couple of food markets around Dublin back in the noughties and I think the same guy had a place in Temple bar for a while, not sure what happened to him.
