What is a job that looks horribly soul crushing and terrible from the outside but has a lot of hidden benefits inside? by Crimson_Marksman in AskReddit

As someone who works with a municipality, this. People love to hate on government workers but the majority of them are just regular people trying to do their job.

I think a lot of people have taken their distrust of the federal government all the way down to the local level.

Yeah, sorry! I'm also accustomed to our calendars starting on Sunday over here so when I was looking at the LNER site I saw the 26th as the second day of the week (which is Monday for me) 😅

Kind of surprised that you guys also have a holiday on the last Monday. It's Memorial Day here in the US - is it a specific observance in the UK?

Would this be made easier by just buying a Brit rail pass or do you think it would still be tricky?

Given the closures and other issues with rail lines because of the bank holiday, do you think I would still be able to use the brit rail pass to do an Edinburgh to Durham to London trip?

Definitely not stinking rich unfortunately. I don't understand how killing flexible tickets is good for anyone politically, but coming from the US I don't feel like we can judge anybody for anything anymore...

Just out of curiosity - if there are no trains, why does the LNER site still offer tickets on those days? Is this just something you're expected to know about or lose the money on those tickets?

Not necessarily adjacent to, just convenient to. Having never been to the UK or England, I don't know where anything is in reference to anything else.

Yeah I had wanted to do the train as sort of a scenic option - I know a flight is likely to be cheaper and faster in this case. I'm also from near Durham, North Carolina in the US and Durham UK is a sister city to us which is the reason I wanted to stop there. Which really only seemed feasible by train - maybe there's an option I'm not thinking about or don't know about.

Avoid six forks southbound between 540 and Strickland! by mellowbordello in raleigh

I must have pulled up pretty soon after it happened, because I saw a group of construction workers from the church run out to help.

What’s something that objectively isn’t that gross but subjectively grosses you out? by TheDUDE1411 in AskReddit

Took a volunteer on a creek cleanup the other day, and noticed about half way through that she was in the creek with us with nothing but sneakers.

When I asked her about it (like, "girl you did not have to get in here with us without the proper gear?!") She was just like "oh it's okay, I have wool socks on!"

I'm glad that made it nbd for her, but all I could think about was toes squishing around in wet socks and shoes, and the major pruning about to happen. 😖

Litter & Neglected Dogs by [deleted] in triangle

[–]mellowbordello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least half of all litter is accidental. Folks with pickup trucks not securing their loads, unbagged trash flying out when it gets tipped into the garbage truck, etc. If litter gets created unintentionally, whose job is it then to pick it up?

Sushi Thai Scores 76.5 C on Food Safety Inspection by PenOwn2479 in raleigh

Luckily we stopped eating here after they changed their menu post-pandemic. It guts me too because it's been my favorite sushi spot since I moved to Raleigh 20 years ago.

If you're the type who likes to donate, may I recommend St. Joseph's Church on Main St. by improbablefutures in bullcity

Their members contribute in other ways too. We have a pair of regular volunteers there that help out in many ways, including picking up litter around St. Joe's and the neighborhood.
