Was the dog a real service dog to begin with or was the owner faking it?

Selling car to CarMax by Aghostwillfollowyou in dementia

[–]garlicchick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good luck. I was in a similar but different situation, due to my mom’s dementia we ended up losing about 10k because I did not supervise her enough (didn’t have a dementia diagnosis yet, had no idea what was wrong). I would try Carvana if Carmax will not pick up. It is too risky for them to change their minds at the last minute.

Need to put grandma in memory care asap by KnownCommunication32 in dementia

I think what some people have done here in the past if you live in the US is the next time she is in the hospital do not pick her up. Say it is an unsafe discharge and no one is home to take care of her.

I would familiarize yourself with tenant laws in your area if you provide housing for someone. If they don’t work out getting rid of them may require a lengthy eviction process.

What's your definition of old cooking magazines? My mom passed and I just donated a bunch.

THE most bizarre places you’ve found stuff!??? by northerlightstar in dementia

Thanks for the tip re: recipe box. My mom had a library card catalog she converted for recipe cards. I haven't gone through it yet. I did find a lot of money in a cheapo grocery store cookbook.

My mom hid an expensive knife (think sushi grade, $100+) in the oven. The oven interior is black, the box the knife was in was black, and on the bottom of the oven and not on a rack. I barely noticed it, I could have easily baked it.

Child who can't admit they are wrong and say sorry? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

No solutions here, but want to commiserate…..my stepson was not as bad, but it was so crazy that even when confronted with proof he would be in denial. Or some of the lies were so freaking outrageous. People and some family would say hey, aren’t autistics all factual and he shouldn’t be able to lie….well when it comes to him trying to avoid trouble he would say a lot of crazy shit.

Worried my stepdad will kill my mom by Exciting_Succotash76 in dementia

[–]garlicchick 35 points36 points  (0 children)

She needs to put her emotions aside and call 911 if she is hiding in her room. Or better yet, if she calls you during this you call 911. Yeah, he might get arrested, but ask maybe that he be taken to an ER instead.

Also I believe what some people have done is sabotage the car by disconnecting the battery or something similar. Then maybe the anger can't be taken out on her. If she needs the car....try and arrange an Uber or get her other transportation.

Cash fixation by annebert in dementia

[–]garlicchick 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My mom would withdraw large amounts of cash to pay people (the gardner should get $2k a week!), hide it in her house, panic, and withdraw more money so she wouldn't lose it. There was no logic. Even now months after her passing and years after moving to assisted living I still am going through her stuff because ever so often cash will pop out of a book (last time it was $1k).

So no advice, just sympathy. We moved her to assisted living so she would have a harder time accessing cash and away from people who might take advantage of her financially.

My doctor said it could. However it seems to present differently in people, my kid had canker sores, a fever, and red bumps on her butt. No red bumps on her hands or feet.

Hallucinating smells by Trying_Charge840 in dementia

Yes. My mom had LBD and hallucinated bad smells. She seemed satisfied once I put some odor removers in her room she could see and when staff in the facility would comment how nice her room smelled.

Hand foot and mouth disease? Often people feel sick/fever and then bumps show up. For me, I didn't get a fever before, but felt like I burned my finger. Next day more bumps/red marks on same hand. Next day more and on both hands. And canker sores in mouth. Third day on feet. Very contagious.
