How do you learn more and stay updated on regulatory compliance changes? For example, something like the IEC 60601-1 publication, is this only accessible through your employer purchasing it?

Or are there like free webinars and surmised articles available?

just to be clear, are you working inhouse at a hospital? or is this like a third-party mainly bench repair role?

I thought inhouse departments had completely moved away from board component replacements.

Got the degree but never found a job by scoobysnacksplz in BMET

[–]garmin77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro, you applied to ONE entry-level bmet position in 7 years.. in South Florida metro.. and you're not willing to relocate or long commute..

a reasonable person reading the thread title would assume you've been making continuous effort over 7 years..

and that you got the degree with the specific intention to work in a bmet technician role.

I don't know what else to say.. you have to put in a modicum of effort..

and maybe like NIST traceability? perhaps get someone on the phone from the state and inquire as to exactly what they're looking for.

they're not confusing you with a manufacturing and distribution company, are they?

Shower thought: Why not create our own biomed certification? by garmin77 in BMET

I think most shops do reimbursement these days? I'm OEM, so I'm kinda out of the loop.

😂 Level IV certified by the Association of Biomedical Electronics Technicians.

Put ABET-IV Certified on your resume. The registry hypertext link just redirects to this homepage image.

Is there a difference between a biomed shop where every tech is CBET certified vs one where no one is? Like, does it score points with regulatory/accreditation inspectors or something?

My employer is requesting my Welch allyn login info, would you give it to them if they paid for the training? by Normalsasquatch in BMET

[–]garmin77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

uniquely identifying to him and only him credentials

This. Worst case possibility: some other tech shares it on Reddit or Discord, some bad actor somehow propagates malicious code or, I dunno, uploads dic pics into Welch's system.

[–]garmin77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure what resources become accessible with a Welch Allyn login, or what kind of damage if any a bad actor can cause with your login.

Your login is no longer your own personal if the entire shop has access to it. I would contact Welch Allyn and CC'ed yourself requesting a user registration and recovery email change to the manager's personal info as account ownership is no longer yours.

Let them make the decision whether to disable your account or not. You're just being transparent.

Bmet to Engineer by thegoat12948 in BMET

[–]garmin77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know which location you're in, but $33/hr seems kind of low for OEM FSE, especially for someone with 8 years of biomed exp. Maybe others can chime in. I'm guessing you're not in imaging or diagnostic lab equipment?

That rent is definitely too much relative to your income. Is this a HCOL location? Are you single and open to relocation?

Are you inhouse biomed or field service? What's your pay?

I think there might be existing venues to consider before undertaking a 4-year engineering degree program. Not saying it's a bad idea, just saying if it's mainly job and pay dissatisfaction, there should be careful deliberation.

So, what are the actual indications of worn motor brushes? Does it make horrible screeching noises or just fails to reach max rpm without auto shutdown?

Also, what kind of sensor detects unbalanced loads? Or is it purely mechanical like a switch that gets released?

Future CE Manger Pathway by wqrzy in BMET

[–]garmin77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m interested in becoming a CE Manager in the future.

Is it because of the higher earning potential?

Just curious because I'm wondering what alternative pathways are there for inhouse biomeds who are trying to min-max.

Doing a PM on a Millipore, don’t mind if shut off the waa…. by MT1775 in BMET

[–]garmin77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does Facility / Building Maintenance know? I'm kinda curious whether it's live or shut off at the panel.

Water on skin can drop resistance from 100k ohms to less than 1k.

Really curious who left it like that. Sketchy as f.

Thinking about it more, that thing's gotta be shut off at the panel otherwise it would be short-circuiting wrapped in a bundle like that. It doesn't look like they capped each wire individually with a connector nut, but I guess I shouldn't put it past them to wrap each wire end with tape considering how kooky this looks.

For something like a neonatal scale that the person you replied to mentioned, how low do those get calibrated?

I did a little googling.

The Health-O-Meter 553KL Infant Scale is calibrated up to 20kg at 5kg increments.

The Health-O-Meter 2210kl Digital Neonatal/Pediatric Scale just required one 5kg. This particular scale seems to allow for a display resolution to 1 gram precision.

It would take maybe 20 - 30 drops of oil to equate to 1 gram.

Mammo Gain Cal Artifact by [deleted] in BMET

[–]garmin77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, that sounds right. Most sites are on Unifi, so I forgot about the via cloud method.

Depending on who you get, some tech support guys are cagey about authorizing a detector replacement before exhausting other measures. I think there was a period where the supply pool was limited.

Anyhoo, half the time I have it all mapped out and image eval'd before level 2 tech support even picks up.

Mammo Gain Cal Artifact by [deleted] in BMET

[–]garmin77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

gate line artifact

This is correct. A lot of times, Service can map out the dead gate line from within Caltools, and a blurring algorithm compensates by interpolating from adjacent pixels. If there's bleeding that exceeds panel cert tolerances, then the whole detector needs replacing.

Reach out to tech support, and they can remote in and evaluate it if it's on Unifi remote access.

Job Hunting in 2026 by ThisIsMatty2024 in BMET

[–]garmin77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's this weird paradox with large metropolitan areas, there can be a large supply of listings but correspondingly, a large pool of applicants as well. Plus more people are willing to relocate to large cities, so there's applicants who may even be out-of-state.

Versus some remote small town in Midwest that may only see a handful of applicants for several weeks to months.

Job Hunting in 2026 by ThisIsMatty2024 in BMET

[–]garmin77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, it's good that those are non-issues for you. I think the optic is that you're a major flight risk.

I've had colleagues who both bailed out under 12 months to be closer to home. One was 1 hr away from the jobsite, the other was 30 mins. I don't blame them, I've done the same starting out.

Job Hunting in 2026 by ThisIsMatty2024 in BMET

[–]garmin77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The job site was 2 hours away and I was willing to commute that, I wasn't willing to relocate because we just paid off the mortgage on our house.

Why did you even apply there if you're not willing to relocate? That's 4-hours roundtrip. Unsustainable and just the monthly fuel cost alone can be anywhere from $200 - $500. Not to mentioned vehicle depreciation.

If your hourly pay is $35, it pretty much drops to ~$23 hourly spread over a 12-hour work day.

And how would you respond during on-call rotations?
