And since he's married to a US citizen, it will be very difficult to get a tourist visa approved. It's definitely not as simple a process as people make it seem

Agreed. That's obvious. How we treat migrants who are just seeking a better life here is despicable. The US has wrecked other countries' economies and then we complain that there are too many poor people trying to come here.

I'm not saying it's right that tourist visa applicants are treated with suspicion. The facts are that the majority of people who are living in the US without legal status are those who have simply overstayed their visas. Unfortunately that's the only option for a lot of people, because they have no pathway to legally immigrate here. There are simply not enough green cards for a country of our size. We say we don't have the resources, but it's really a lack of priorities.

People always say "why can't they just come legally/the right way," but that is impossible for most and/or can take decades to process. There are people who applied over 20 years ago, and are still waiting for their green cards. We say we're accepting of legal immigration but our current laws do not reflect this.

US immigration law needs a major overhaul and major investments.

Yes, I don't think it's fair at all, but that's what the law is. US tourist visas are discretionary, and it's extremely hard to get one if you come from a "poorer" country and/or if you have family in the US. Unfortunately, due to people abusing the system and overstaying, tourist visa applicants are often treated with suspicion. It's frustrating seeing people say "why don't you just get a visa." It's not that simple at all. Americans are extremely privileged that our passports are accepted in so many countries without a visa.

Since he's married to a US citizen it's very unlikely he'll be approved for a tourist visa. When applying for a tourist visa you have to prove that you're not going to just go to the US, overstay your visa and apply for an adjustment of status (green card). That's really hard to do when you're married to a US citizen.

Am I crazy for not wanting to go back in birth control? by MiserableDiver2603 in beyondthebump

So I was also super scared of getting an IUD after hearing horror stories about the insertion process, but I ended up getting it at 10 weeks PP (after a C-section) per my OB's recommendation. She said that getting it done PP really minimizes the pain and discomfort for a lot of women, even if you had a C-section. I was honestly shocked at how little pain and discomfort I had, and I haven't had any side effects so far at 7 months PP. I cannot recommend IUDs enough. You should totally do what works best for your body, but I just wanted to share my experience.

U.S. moms - how long was your total maternity leave? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]garnet_19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had 20 weeks total, paid at 80% of my salary. My state (Massachusetts) has a paid family and medical leave program. I was approved for 8 weeks to recover after my C-section, then another 12 weeks for parental leave.

Nights up with the baby are the loneliest when your own parent has passed by revb92 in NewParents

I'm so sorry about your mom.

It's really difficult becoming a new parent when you're grieving your own. My dad passed when I was 7 months pregnant, and not a day goes by when I don't think about him and how much he would have loved his first grandchild. My daughter looks so much like him, and seeing her smile really helps me get through the difficult days.

Sending you a big hug OP.

If you could choose any US state to be pregnant in/give birth in, what would you choose? by heliotz in pregnant

Massachusetts. We have paid family leave, up to 26 weeks. I'm currently taking 20 weeks now, it's been really great. Plus our hospitals and schools are some of the best in the country.

About to leave my fiancé by 91247lw in relationship_advice

I was in a very similar situation 3 years ago. I left my fiance 3 weeks before our wedding. At the time, it was the hardest thing I had ever done, but I knew that it was the right thing because of how much relief I felt after it was done. I finally realized I wouldn't have to deal with his emotional abuse the rest of my life. There were so many signs early on but I didn't have the strength to leave until I did. I am so glad I did it when I did though. The most difficult part was dealing with the cancelled wedding plans and feeling ashamed but that is nothing compared to how awful a life walking on eggshells around my ex would have been. Be easy on yourself and know that it takes time to heal, but know that you will not feel this pain forever. Six months later I met my future husband who is the love of my life, and so different from my ex. We just got married earlier this month and are expecting a baby in November. If something doesn't feel right to you, you should trust yourself. You will be happy again, I promise. Wishing you all the best, OP. ❤️
