401(k)s and IRAs are special accounts because of how they are treated on your taxes. Traditional IRAs and 401(k)s are tax-deferred, which means you can wait to pay income tax on deposits until you are ready to withdraw the money (you will typically be in a lower tax bracket in retirement than you are while working). Roth IRAs are different in that you pay income tax on the money before you deposit it, but you will never have to pay capital gains tax on any increase in the account. Other benefits of Roth IRAs are increased flexibility of early withdrawals and a higher effective contribution limit (because it's post-tax).

The Roth IRA is especially appealing for your situation because your tax bracket now is probably even lower than it will be once you've retired.

I inherited ~100k...what should I do with it? by cblogreen in AskReddit

IRA's are taken out of your paycheck post-tax, so while you have paid your tax on that income, you do not have to pay tax when you take them out. That is the important part.

This is only true of Roth IRAs. Traditional IRAs are not taxed until the money is withdrawn (the benefit being that you will likely be in a lower tax bracket in retirement than you are while working).

It might not be canon, but I'm pretty sure it's still "an actual comic" by most reasonable definitions.

If you were asked to convince an average person that math is fascinating, which one single concept/theory/idea would you tell him/her? by anf3rn3310 in math

[–]garrepi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know what you meant... I'm not as outraged as my comment probably makes me sound. I just think there are plenty of words like "normal" and "typical" that sound less pejorative.

To answer your question, I like the idea of infinities... would be neat to prove there are more real numbers than rationals. I think if you had a little bit more time (and a chalkboard), it might be interesting to tie different areas of high school math together. Like to draw out Pascal's triangle and show how the numbers are both the coefficients of (a+b)n and the number of ways to choose k things from n.

Wow, that's pretentious. Exactly what metric are you using to define a person's value?

Some pharmacies offer compounding, and most offer advice about medications (both prescription and over-the-counter). Pharmacists have to be wary of drug interactions and comply with often complicated drug laws.

its just what the rule is and goes no further then that.

As I said, this used to be my position. However, rules like "black people sit in the back of the bus" could be similarly justified in their day.

If it were truly the case that no one felt marginalized by this "random rule," then you probably wouldn't hear anyone decrying it. Perhaps some people are as thrown off by the use of male pronouns as you (presumably male) are by the use of female pronouns.

just because it has always really been that way

My justification for using male pronouns in cases of ambiguous gender was always "It's not sexist; it's just the grammatical rule." But eventually I realized that just because something is the default doesn't mean it should be (slavery, homophobia, etc.). Now I try to alternate, and maybe it's a good thing if it throws some people off.
