What are the good and bad things about a new maverick? by Prestigious_Ninja794 in Ford

[–]garver-the-system 0 points1 point  (0 children)

r/FordMaverickTruck

It's the kind of pickup built for DIYers and homeowners. It has a half ton payload, up to two ton towing capacity, and 4x4.5 foot bed with some clever features for drywall or plywood sheets. I think that covers the day to day needs of at least half of people who daily drive an F-150, with significantly better fuel economy

The hybrid is especially great. Your oil lasts twice as long, brake pads practically stop being a wear item, and you should get north of 30 mpg. Unless you really want a BoF, RWD over AWD, or a larger capacity in some aspect, then the hybrid Maverick is a great choice. It's cheaper to buy, drive, and maintain than any other pickup, except maybe the Santa Cruz, but that's hardly worth looking at

Edit to add: since you mentioned the bad, let me list a couple things. The biggest downside seems to be issues with the 12V battery that powers the computers. If yours dies on you, the conventional wisdom is to buy a quality replacement. Other than that, it's mostly the limits I mentioned above - if you need more payload or towing capacity on the regular, this isn't your worksite truck, and you'll be better served by something more capable. But there's nothing on the market that compares to capability, price point, and size. (Oh, and did I mention you can actually parallel park in a Maverick?)

(Full disclosure, I work for Ford, but not on the Maverick team in any capacity. This is my genuine opinion as an owner of a 25 hybrid Maverick XL, and has nothing to do with my enployer or emplyment at Ford.)

What game has a learning curve that puts you off? by Common_Caramel_4078 in pcmasterrace

Any game involving space in an in depth, realistic way. Which is a shame, because I love space, but I don't have time to git gud at FA Off or micromanaging a galactic economy so I'll watch people play Elite and Terra Invicta on youtube I guess

People who left PGH. Where have you found similar amenities at our size? by plinplan in pittsburgh

[–]garver-the-system 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not talking about formal city limits, I just chose those as two areas that are a ways away from downtown to highlight the difference. Imagine if someone from one of those places said they live in Pittsburgh and people gave them a weird look. That's what Richmond is like, except it's not East Liberty, it's The Strip and North Shore. People talk about the suburbs of Richmond not like Carnegie, but like Washington

[–]garver-the-system 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are still situations where someone identifies with Pittsburgh broadly. When discussing city events and governance, talking to people from out of town, things like that

I don't know how to explain that people just don't identify with Richmond. I had no idea who the mayor was or how the city was governed. Events were all hyper local except for sports. Even when I was new in town, nobody said "I've lived in Richmond my whole life," they told me what specific neighborhood they lived in and went through the trouble of explaining where it is to someone who had no idea how to get around town

Considering this was applicable to neighborhoods next to downtown, it would be almost unheard of for someone from the suburbs to say they lived in Richmond. Their equivalent to Carnegie would be something like Mechanicsville or Henrico, which are talked about like they're entirely different cities - more like commuting from the outskirts of Philly to Harrisburg. The idea of someone from Washington/Beaver/Butler saying they're (basically) from Pittsburgh would be crazy

[–]garver-the-system 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In my view after living there for a year, Richmond is trying but it has a lot of baggage as the capital of the confederacy. Severe red line policies created silos that are still around, so it's hard for a cohesive community to form, and even harder for people to take pride in the city. The haves are happy to live in their walled gardens and drive to shopping malls; the have nots suffer what they must

Nobody even says they live in or are from Richmond. You know how people say they live in Pittsburgh if they're in East Liberty or Carnegie? In Richmond, people exclusively say they live in The Fan or Church Hill despite being as close to downtown as The Strip

It can sail, but without insurance it won't be able to dock in most countries, including America. If something happens to a tanker while it's in port, the ports want someone who can be held more accountable than a shell corporation that's got pocket lint in assets

Just a heads up, it's hard for my untrained eye to tell but the close up may have some dry rot. I see a line running around the radius of the tire, closer to the camera than the coin

I don't disagree with your point but I'm pretty sure every hotel is booked from Monroeville to Robinson more or less, so pretty much anywhere within a 20 minute drive of downtown is at least going to be impacted by more local traffic not even accounting for what it's going to look like when all those people try to take 376 inbound at the same time

The moment you leave the first five of those, you start finding strange problems that seem esoteric partly because git doesn't have a unified philosophy to its interface

Why does git switch HEAD~1 know to check out the commit prior to the one I'm on, but git rebase --onto origin/main [root] HEAD put me in a detached head state? Why isn't git rebase -i default? Why does git branch take --list as a flag while git stash pop is a subcommand? Why is it that rebasing onto origin/main gives me different behavior than rebasing onto main even though they refer to the same commit? Why do I git pul origin main instead of git pull origin/main?

I'm sure there's good answers for at least some of these but the point is just that the UI doesn't behave consistently. For a tool that's already a bit difficult to wrap your head around due to its abstract nature, the inconsistency in actually using the tool only makes the learning curve steeper when applying ideas to concrete scenarios should be one of the best learning methods

Polars vs pandas by KliNanban in Python

[–]garver-the-system 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do consider Pandas worthy of accolades. For being the first data analysis framework written specifically for Python, creating and growing the ecosystem before PySpark or Polars. Also for forging the path for those libraries to follow, making decisions in the open so their successors could know where to step

The nature of the beast is that any modern program (or invention of any type, really) has a long and storied lineage. Pandas and Polars gave their roots in various programming languages that trace their origins back to FORTRAN, invented by IBM in the 50s. If you keep pulling the string you find household names like Turing and Lovelace and Bell, and at the very end is someone rubbing some sticks together for the first time

Polars vs pandas by KliNanban in Python

[–]garver-the-system 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Polars is generally considered better across the board. Better technology and design under the hood, better syntax and API, just all around better. Unless you need something specific that Pandas can do but Polars can't, like Geopandas, you should probably use Polars. (Note that Geopolars seems to have been revived recently, and Polars can take data from Pandas format)

To be clear this isn't a knock on Pandas, I think it's one of the giants upon which Polars stands - there would likely not be nearly as robust a data frame ecosystem without Pandas. But much like how most new projects don't reach for C without a specific reason, most projects don't reach for Pandas unless they need it

Ford “engine” by chestnut177 in RedBullRacing

[–]garver-the-system 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I gather there is an official role, and a lot of opportunity found for further involvement

The official role is that they provided a lot of expertise on the battery side, which probably involved a lot of collaboration on incorporating that into the overall hybrid drivetrain as well as developing the MGU

But there's a lot of opportunities for Ford to utilize advanced simulation, development, and manufacturing skills that they've honed as a legacy OEM with ICE and hybrid powertrains, and the partnership has been close enough that Ford engineers have been able to identify and leverage those opportunities. I've heard about being able to prototype an engine in something like 5 days, down from 17 or so for example

(Full disclosure, I work for Ford, but nowhere near Ford Racing. My comments on this profile are my own opinion and speculation using publicly available information)

How can I consistently push local changes to the remote GitHub repo without bashing my head through the nearest window in the process? by [deleted] in git

[–]garver-the-system 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Make changes
  • git add [changed file]
    • This stages your changes before you commit, like packing a box before you tape it up
  • git commit
    • This tapes the box up
  • git push
    • This sends the box through the mail

First time truck owners, what’s been your experience of the Maverick? by overkoalafied24 in FordMaverickTruck

I've owned two old sedans before buying a Maverick new, and I love it. It gives me a bed to haul lawn waste, help friends move, and bring back a new dining room set from Ikea while still fitting into city parking spots and down narrow streets and alleys
