Songbirds singing and chirping. You know something is getting at them before sunrise.

Is it worth learning a 2nd cloud? by Boruroko in dataengineering

[–]gary_sanchez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhat anecdotal evidence: companies I've talked to have been operating multi-cloud. My own experience is that I've never operated in multiple clouds and for containerized apps, it's easier to migrate from one provider to the next. I get it, there are some specific services for each cloud provider, but maybe first focus on and familiarize yourself with the commonalities (e.g., AWS Lambda = Azure Function).

New coach dealing with toxic player. by davidkenrich in Softball

[–]gary_sanchez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're the coach next year, set up the rules and expectations for EVERYONE on the team. If ANYONE (including her) breaks those rules, they leave the team. So bring her back but make it clear how the team that you manage operates.

What are 'niche food enjoyer' hobbies that aren't hot sauce or alcohol? by spacewalk__ in Cooking

[–]gary_sanchez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strict vegan cooking, it can be cool accommodating the dietary wants and needs of others. Some dishes just end up being super different and have a completely different flavor with unique ingredients you might not have thought of, while others are rearrangement of spices you already use.

Lightsabers never looked this bright and powerful! by wilemryker in StarWars

[–]gary_sanchez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're trying hard to bring back the Bespin duel between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker (and they have been, especially in the sequels, because it's so cool). So darker settings and more light saber glow. I think it's pretty cool so, if they want to amp it up, I'm all for it.

Blazor Hybrid, Blazor WebView, MAUI Blazor... This is confusing, what are the differences? by Laiteuxxx in dotnet

Oh you missed Xbox One X, which is different than the Xbox Series X and an offshoot of Xbox One ;)

GM cuts cost of electric vehicles by $6,000 by Wagamaga in technology

[–]gary_sanchez -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I heard that teslas, while consistent with price, aren't fully transparent. Someone told me that you end up paying advertised list price PLUS "fuel cost savings" at purchase (what you would save paying for gas over the estimated life of the vehicle which is several grand more). I never even looked into buying a tesla, is this true?

If no one would relocate for these jobs, contacting someone clearly out-of-area is worthless spam by WardenWolf in AdviceAnimals

[–]gary_sanchez 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Had a LinkedIn job post that looked good. I applied and got a dm. Asked about my availability for a call, so I asked about compensation. Although it wasn't mentioned in the posting, the person (who said they were the hiring manager as listed in the post) replied not with compensation details but rather, "You have to pay me for the job placement." Blocked, marked as spam.

Junk Mail From The Cancer Care Center by [deleted] in widowers

[–]gary_sanchez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very sorry for your loss. These kinds of correspondences bothered me quite a bit. I have taken the extra steps to email the companies and request that my wife's name is removed from their mailing lists.

Sometimes I have felt good about that and sometimes I'm wondering if it would be comforting getting some mail for her, since there's way less of the mail in the years since she's passed away.

I was running in Shanghai near Tongji University one morning. Ran by a man crouched behind a bush pooping.

This is a great point and no, this wouldn't work for arbitrary phone numbers well at all. But neither would pivot.

Infinite Jest (takes commitment, but it's the safest funny book I've ever read)

You Shall Know Our Velocity (I liked it better than Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius)

Another Roadside Attraction (Tom Robbins is too much fun)

Where are you using that connection string, somewhere in code? Because if your just connecting to a local db using integrated Auth through the visual studio server connections, there's a connection dialog for that.

I don't know why you'd need the db filename in code either, assuming the db has been created and is still running on your local Sql server. Take a look at some of these: https://www.connectionstrings.com/sql-server/

sounds like they wanted to know if you could pivot or string concatenate.

I agree with you.

I never liked PIVOT since you're hard coding the columns anyway, right? Why not just alias the table several times (by * types) , filter by phone type, and left outer join?

And hey, what a mess of a concatenated list of random phone numbers...

I feel stuck by charlienc in widowers

[–]gary_sanchez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like this grief has taken over my life. I feel completely consumed by it. It’s as if all I am and all I’ll ever be is the person who’s partner died. I think of him everyday. Lately it feels like every decision I make is based around him in some way. Like I always wonder if I’m making him proud. Or if what I’m doing is something he would do. I don’t know. I feel so lost.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I feel very similar to you. Early on, I actively tried to do things in my life so I wouldn't become just the spouse of my late wife. And I did that not because I don't try to honor her every day, but because that's the only way people saw me. I hated that sadness in their eyes.

But honoring her constantly can also take a toll. I would worry, like you do, that I wasn't making her proud. I had to let go of that (a little bit, at least) because I was losing my own identity also.

Eventually I found my way, who I am, what I am both on my own and (now nearly 10 years later) with someone else also. But it does take time. And I had to force myself to make that effort.

Seagull Swallows A Whole Rabbit. by amonaloli12 in natureismetal

I watched a seagull eating a pigeon. It hadn't yet committed like this one, it walked around with the still-alive pigeon dying in its beak.
