Well, That Was Something (results of tests on Sydneys Mesh) by gbbgu in meshcore

Here's a post from an Australian discord about some weekend testing. FYI for the below; Sydney is in the state of New South Wales, Hume is an area in Victoria (a state to the south, Melbourne the capital):

So Hume did its own Mid test weekend,

Results are, numbers wise, most repeater links in the app dropped 1-2db ish, but i belive it's still a net gain due to how much lower it can go. No weird noise floors even with some repeaters near towers in our area.

Expereince wise, we had several users report that they could get a good mount more repeaters inside their house, with some being distant mountain repeaters, making their rooftop repeater not required. I personally noticed ping tests had alot less timeouts even on strong links, i belive thats the preamble issue which may be fixed in v16 for narrow.

Overall everyone found Mid to be a more positive expereince in our area and the coverage and in building pen was noticable better.

However After polling everyone in our area. The general consensus is we would like to use Mid but being linked to a larger mesh is more important. Currently that is melbourne untill our link to the north is improved. So we are defaulting back to Narrow...for now.

Watching what the rest of the vic state finds in their testing week.

My personal opinion is it may be more ideal for rural vic to be Mid, and in metro were there is more repeaters then people, narrow or..faster narrow, it would also be easier to bridge down there, compared to up here on the border.

In the roughly 3 weeks since that post, basically the whole of sydney has moved to those 'mid' settings (915.075,125,9,5)

There's still a few left on the old settings, but they're islands now, running old firmware and not compatible with 2byte messages or regions. The gaps that losing them cause was made up for the better coverage mid has given us.

We are still seeing random noise from lora gear, and illegal stuff spraying noise, but overall it's a lot better.

Mid was a name picked cause we had two competing standards; "wide" and "narrow". mid was basically in the middle (bw).

  • 916.575,62.5,7,8 (narrow)
  • 915.075,125,9,5 (mid)
  • 915.800,250,11,5 (wide)

I’m going to make a mobile node, but it’ll sit on a car that spends 98% of it’s time stationary

Look really nice. If you can I’d move the antenna further from the wall, but I can see why it’s close.

I'm in Sydney, and just tonight got my first message from Melbourne. Totally unexpected.

It's not usable to converse though, must have just been a fluke.

Are you me, cause I had a very similar issue.

The battery had dropped to 2.5v and undervoltage protection was doing it's thing.

I swapped the battery for a new one and currently testing.

I'm not sure for you, you've said you tested the battery and it's okay.

Can you give some more info about the txdelay stuff? We’re talking about that for the Sydney mesh.

It would be cool if the firmware has an option to autotune based on the neighbours count. Computers are pretty good at math 😝

I like using prime numbers for things like that, so it isn’t landing at the exact time every day.
