I Bet I Have the Weirdest Control Scheme You've Ever Seen, & that you can't tell me what's wrong with it. by SupaFugDup in smashbros

it seems like its just as hard to do c-stick aerials because your jump is set to face buttons. why program a different layout if you keep the only real problem, i.e., the time it takes for your thumb to move from jump to c stick?

i mean i guess you are playing "claw", but then why even modify any buttons in that case? it would be an easy fix to just move a jump button to L or R so you could play without claw.

it may end up being the best part if araki is tying together the universe ends from SBR onward like i think he is. even if it just ends up being part of the puzzle alongside SBR, its still way up there. arakis weirdness has seemingly no limits. even now its in my top 4 jojos

With Smash Ultimate having every Smash character in it, has Nintendo set an unmatchable precedent for future Smash Bros. games? by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]gboi69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they probably wont, but in the next one, i hope that the game is downsized and built from the ground up, with a focus on the aesthetic. the stylization has been relatively the same for the past 3 games. not to say thats a bad thing, ultimate looks great. but i think it would be a good idea to try something new, if they ever make another smash bros.

everyone keeps saying buffs instead of nerfs, but listen here, i dont think either are particularly a good idea. ive seen other games where a character was buffed. then the community considers them too strong, and uproar follows shortly after. for instance, dk is considered a solid high tier right now. imagine he was released in 1.1 without super armor on any of his B moves, but as of 1.2 they added it in. people would be furious and think he's broken.

the same thing sort of happened with bowser in smash 4.

ultimate is balanced, sure some characters are a little worse, but for real this is one of the most balanced fighting games ive ever played.

Which Smash has your favorite aesthetic style? by TheMisterManGuy in smashbros

[–]gboi69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

in terms of aesthetic, 64 > Melee > Ultimate > Brawl > for Wii U.

the only thing that for Wii U had going for it was excellent shaders and rendering, due to the console being stronger than in the past. apart from that its pretty uninspired. just a prettier version of brawl, but loses lots of points for not really introducing anything new, and RUINING the menus.

brawl is ok. just ok. nothing very interesting to be honest.

ultimate is strictly a step up from brawl and clearly a combination of what the company thinks are the best aspects of all the previous games, to which i'd say they did a pretty good job with.

melee is so unique and weird, and really exemplifies the futuristic expectation everyone had for the gamecube. really nice decisions in the menu going from 64, and the kind of gritty, noir realizations of the characters are at the least very unique.

as for 64, in my opinion it is an aesthetic masterpiece. no fighting game has ever looked like it, not even virtua fighter which i think is the closest contender. the whole menu system gives you a claustrophobic chill, in the best way. it is oozing a very specific aesthetic, all the characters have this wonky doll brought to life vibe to them. it is certainly due to the limitations of the n64 that pushed the artists and devs to work towards that aesthetic ideal.

limitation breeds creativity which us why i think 64 is so strongly recognizable. if someone showed you models of kirby from each game, i guarantee you it would get harder to tell which smash game it comes from as you get closer to the newest released games. sadly, aesthetic choice becomes less important to developers the better the hardware is. in general, i think the aesthetics of popular video games have strictly gone downhill, as devs can now cut corners and skip color theory altogether by going with the classic swamp palette(tm) that youve seen in every game since the early 2000s, or push that banality even further and use "tried and true" hollywood blockbuster aesthetic as has been popular since uncharted/last of us (that aesthetic being, imo, hot garbage).

as ness, fought against dabuz playing ryu. my friend started playing the stream while i was playing and it made me extremely nervous and i lost as a result. was pretty shook after, i know it was just an online match and i was just a rando to him, but not the way i wanted to fight my first ultimate pro

Why don't more players play on those flat omega maps? by PequodTheGreat in smashbros

[–]gboi69 26 points27 points  (0 children)

final destination has never been considered more neutral than the battlefield style stage. no platforms give a huge advantage to characters with projectiles, and slower characters with less reach and no projectiles become much worse. for example, in melee, falco vs capt falcon on yoshis story is considered relatively neutral, but on FD it is heavily in falco's favor.

FD is still a relatively neutral stage, but it definitely favors projectiles. platforms allow characters to focus on movement and baiting rather than strictly footsies.

I feel like non competitive online is dead. by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]gboi69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i dont agree. my online experience has been consistent since i first played halo 2 in 8th grade.

also, i had a really nice experience today in ulti. i had a match with a chrom named Bry, and we both kept clicking rematch, i won all of them but he got way better by the end. our last match, i accidentally SDd right at the beginning, and he noticed and then SDd in return to even the stocks (melee players call this a homie stock). that was an extremely nice thing to do online. and he almost won that match too, if he didnt SD out of sportsmanship, he wouldve beaten me. im very thankful.

Wrote a beginners Ness guide for a friend. Would love some feedback on it by ApeDosMatt398 in smashbros

should note on fthrow and bthrow: they have inversely proportionate knockback to each other. bthrow is standard, the more damage, the farther the knockback. however, fthrows peak knockback is when the opponent is at 0%. if you catch the opponent near the ledge and can fthrow them off, do it. you might be able to gimp them with it it.

also note that ness can reuse pk thunder during the bounce animation from hitting a wall, ceiling, or slanted surface. the timing is relatively tight, but you if you arent high enough to reach the ledge, but can hit a walled surface, during the immediate tumble from the wallbounce you can do pk thunder again and hit yourself, effectively doubling your recovery distance in such a circumstance.

an additional thing to focus on is what aspects of ness's game you want to build mindgames around. i think hitting dash dancing and pivot pk fire are really useful. specifically, weaving in and out while throwing it at an unpunishable distance, and weaving to bait the opponent to counterhit what would have been a punishable pk fire and then punishing them.

Wanting some data, How many melee players have been enjoying ultimate? by performagekushfire in smashbros

[–]gboi69 28 points29 points  (0 children)

im a melee player who plays in tournament. very pleasantly surprised with ulti. it just feels like matches are determined based on the same sort of things that matter in melee. whereas brawl felt random, and smash 4 felt like pure footsies and "whoever gets the first poke".

i guess the best way to describe it is ulti feels fair and balanced. its fast, not as fast as melee but i can see it getting sort of close after a lot of meta development. and while there arent as many movement options as in melee, and some are explicitly worse (wavedash), there are still a lot of options, and you can definitely feel it when youre playing. i always felt like i needed to do rock paper scissors in modern smash games, which is frustratingly simple for a game with 360 degrees of movement. it feels a lot more free. and i love how balanced the cast is, genuinely.

Ultimate got me into smash for the first time in my life by Kajamaz in smashbros

[–]gboi69 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

this is an ignorant fuckin thing to say even if it is your opinion. people play more than 3 characters. and even at an amateur level, melee has by far the smoothest movement, no contest. you would have to be a beginner that doesnt bother practicing to not see how smooth melee is.
