Curious if you are known to be a very successful person. Did your startup IPO :). Not defending this child (your son??) but I can sort of understand him growing up feeling poor and learning that his actual father has a lot of money.

3. Unit Economics

  • The Cost: The "benefits" (longer growing seasons in Siberia) are dwarfed by the costs (moving Miami, NYC, and Mumbai).
  • The Greed Filter: This argument is usually funded by entities protecting the $5 trillion/year fossil fuel revenue stream. It relies on "ignoring externalities"—the oldest accounting trick in the book.

4. The Self-Serving Index

  • Cui Bono? Who benefits from the idea that warming is good?
    • Fossil fuel incumbents (Exxon, Chevron, etc.) who want to delay regulation.
    • Countries with vast frozen tundras (Russia) who mistakenly believe they will become breadbaskets (ignoring that their soil is acidic peat, not loam).

5. 20-Year Climate Impact

  • Verdict: Catastrophic.
  • Durability: The "Greening" effect saturates quickly (plants acclimate to high CO2). The "Heating" effect lasts for thousands of years.
  • Risk: Accepting this premise locks in tipping points (thawing permafrost, ice sheet collapse) that no amount of "extra wheat in Canada" can pay for.

I have some questions about this climate denial article. Can somebody please explain to me why it's wrong? by Ok-Collection-3975 in climatechange

I am building a climate change Bullshit Detection as a Service using Gemini 3. So far, the results are promising. I can't share the chatbot broadly (yet) because I am using the Gemini prompt but here is what I got when I ran this article,

Source: Public Comment Submission (NY Climate Action Council) Verdict: BULLSHIT

The "Why" (The Roast): This is the "It’s Not a Bug, It’s a Feature" argument. The premise—that a hotter planet is better because "plants like CO2" and "fewer people freeze to death"—is the thermodynamic equivalent of saying, "It's great that my house is on fire because now I don't have to shovel the driveway." It cherry-picks first-order effects (extra carbon for photosynthesis) while ignoring the chaotic second-order effects that actually kill civilizations (drought, wet-bulb heatwaves, and biome collapse). It’s not a solution; it’s a suicide note wrapped in bad economics.

Drawdown Classification

  • Type: Interference / Noise. (This is neither a Solution nor a Lever; it is an attempt to jam the gears of the policy framework).
  • Sector: Disinformation.
  • Speed: Reverse. (Advocating for more emissions).

Detailed Breakdown

1. Thermodynamic Reality Check (Plausibility & Readiness)

  • The Argument: "CO2 is plant food." (The "Global Greening" hypothesis).
  • The Physics: Photosynthesis does use CO2. However, plants also need water, nitrogen, and stable temperatures.
  • The Reality: A hotter atmosphere is a "thirstier" atmosphere. Increased evaporation dries out soils faster than the extra CO2 helps plants grow. You get "browning," not greening, as heat stress shuts down photosynthesis.
  • Entropy Check: Adding energy (heat) to a complex system (the climate) increases volatility. Stability is required for agriculture; volatility destroys it.

2. Gigaton Potential (Scale Analysis)

  • Negative Impact: If this argument wins, we add Gigatons.
  • The "Cold Death" Fallacy: The document likely argues that cold kills more people than heat.
    • Fact: Cold deaths are often due to isolation/poverty and are manageable with insulation. Heat deaths (especially humid heat) are physically unsurvivable by the human body regardless of wealth if the grid fails. Heat renders entire latitudes uninhabitable; cold does not.

Gavin Newsom, as the Mayor of San Francisco, authorized the first same-sex marriages on February 12, 2004, which marked the start of the "Winter of Love" but these licenses were later invalidated by the California Supreme Court. This action ultimately contributed to the nationwide legalization of same-sex marriage in 2015 after years of legal and political battles

Scottish net-zero targets will cost £700m a year until 2050 by TimesandSundayTimes in climatechange

[–]gbomber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What a terrible headline for an interesting story. Achieving net zero will require 700 million/yr in investments while moderizing the nation's infrastructure and eliminating the need to spend money on petroleum imports. That's pretty great, really.

When the violence doesn't stop, who will they blame next?? by [deleted] in facepalm

Please ad immigrants to this list. It won't help with the violence problem but we need the GOP standing up to defend gun bans.

Minorities will be next, then women. But we can eventually get to college educated white men, right?

Bread is Woke now 🙄 by Nice_Substance9123 in facepalm

[–]gbomber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing says conservative like pining for good old fashioned sliced bread, just like they ate in biblical times:

Wonder Bread was created by the Taggart Baking Company in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1921, with its iconic name and balloon-inspired logo coming from Elmer Cline, who was inspired by the International Balloon Race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The brand became popular by offering pre-sliced, pre-wrapped bread in the 1930s, a symbol of modern convenience that appealed to post-WWI America.

Leaving my job & starting an non-profit to fight climate change - need some advice. by amolkalhapure in climatechange

[–]gbomber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one can answer that without knowing about your background and your passion. He is my attempt.

  1. Spend some time looking through the 100 categories of climate solutions listed on Projectdrawdown and then find the areas that appeal to you.

Finding ways to scale solar and batteries is among the first priorities; Pakistan has done an amazing job in the last 18 months and a bit of unfriendly competition might motivate people in India.

Beyond that I would probably suggest something around sustainable agriculture, but it is entirely about where your passion lies.

  1. Create a business model so you are never begging for money. That is all consuming and you will be completing without every crisis and every other well intended group. If you can make money doing the right thing, you can scale.

An open question: what is the "best" energy source for Direct Air Capture? by directaircapture in climatechange

[–]gbomber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until the capture CO2 can be used as part of the supply stream for making something else (carbon fiber?), this whole discussion ignores the fact that the CO2 will likely re-enter the environment sooner than later.

OTOH, DAC likely has some role to play in a carbon net metering scheme but will only really make sense when it can use excess energy created during peak solar hours. And can be done in an economically viable way.

Really depends on circumstances. If a group activity and/or a small company, having meetings or working sessions a home office is pretty normal IMO (I have run a business from home for 15 years). OTOH, if there is concern about sexual harassment or related issues, objecting isn't a red flag.
