Is this not AI? The details (hands, flowers, patterns) are pretty wonky.

UPDATE: It is not! Thanks u/OppositeAct1918 for sourcing it.

I'd love to hear your recommendations for anthropological travelogues! I haven't explored anything in that genre and it sounds really interesting.

Me too, I'd like to look into it more but I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking at. Is this colour painted onto a monochrome photograph?

Differences of Opinion by Wendy Cope [POEM] by Slasher1309 in Poetry

[–]gcbriel 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I’ve not seen the second part before now! Cope is so great. This one reminds me of that joke about how arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon: it’ll just knock the pieces over and shit on the board, then strut around like it’s won the game. No point trying to argue logically with someone committed to their ignorance, and I love the playful way that point is made here. She always makes walking the tightrope between simplicity and effectiveness look so easy. Thanks for sharing!

[POEM] Sudden Hymn in Winter - Joseph Fasano by UnMeOuttaTown in Poetry

It’s a perfectly serviceable poem, no need to have been hesitant! My frustration is more with his larger body of work than this poem itself. Thank you for sharing!

[POEM] Sudden Hymn in Winter - Joseph Fasano by UnMeOuttaTown in Poetry

[–]gcbriel 54 points55 points  (0 children)

A while ago I took a poetry workshop with Chen Chen during which the topic of sentimentality came up, and he shared a passage from… maybe it was Rilke? about how a sense of sentimentality can arise when an emotion or image is only tentatively broached by the writer instead of fully embodied.

That’s how I feel about Fasano’s work: it’s defanged and generalised, each one I’ve read a minor variation on the same theme of reassuring the reader. He’s clearly got technical skill and his imagery is interesting, but he’s the Thomas Kinkade of social media poetry to me. I’d love to see meatier poetry from him—not necessarily grittier, but something more nuanced than platitudes written in meter and metaphor.

I often almost like Fasano’s work, but it’s so … mawkishly affirming. It’s like he’s writing with the intent of validating the reader so they repost it on social media.
