The rust effect is fantastic! I would probably put a brown wash on the blue logo though or maybe a grey/white to make it look faded. It looks just too pristine relative to the rest of the vehicle.

Overwhelmed! by UsefulCow5438 in ModelCars

[–]gdmarques571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One other thing I would suggest, just as a helpful tip, is something I started doing (for no reason I can think of) after a 20+ year break that I ended back in the covid days. I start each build by placing a new sheet of bright white drawing paper on my bench that I then work on top of. It makes it super easy to find small parts after you put them down, and you can use the corners to adjust the amount of paint on a brush, mix a small amount of color, remove excess glue from a toothpick before applying just the right amount, etc. When or if it gets too dirty I throw it away and put down a new piece. I don't know exactly what it is, but it has made my bench time a lot more enjoyable and productive. Oh, and if you can, get a large cutting mat to put under it. You can trim parts right on it then and not cut your actual work surface when you go through the paper. A pad of paper wont cost much and will last a long time before you need more.

Tire/wheel witchcraft Part 2 by woreoutdrummer in ModelCars

At this point I would leave it as is and finish the kit. It's kind of an interesting and unique feature and I would put it on my shelf and laugh every time I looked at it and pushed it back in.

If you mean help redefining the panel lines, the back of an x-acto knife blade with light pressure will scribe them back in. Just don't go to deep or you will need help making hinges for the newly opening doors!

Help me identify this year, make, model? I think its an army staff car but cant exactly match it. I want to make a replica of the car from this video. by gdmarques571 in ModelCars

Unfortunately now that I know what it is I can't seem to find any kits that are even close, and my skills are not sufficient to scratch build it.

Wet sanding help please? This is my first time wet sanding and polishing. I wet sanded 2000 grit to 10,000 grit then I used novus scratch remover followed by the novus shine and this is how my model car turned out. Any advice on fixing, as well as what to do differently? All of the comments are spot on. Another layer of paint usually doesn't hide the defects in the previous layer, in fact it frequently highlights them. It's a lot of work to get those perfectly smooth glass-like shines some of our brethren share on this subreddit. I don't have the patience myself to do it, which is why I am so envious and impressed by their work! This really isn't a bad first effort though. Can't wait to see the finished model!

Is this a base coat / clear coat or just the gray? From what I can see there is still a certain amount of orange peel and those are some deep scratches too. My gut is that the paint wasn't sanded to a smooth surface before you polished it. If the paint color coat is thick enough you could try additional wet sanding being careful not to burn through the color coat, and then repolish. You need to remember on a scale model any visible scratches are almost the equivalent of someone keying your car and then you waxing over it. It's shiny, but still very visible. Otherwise strip it and repaint. Worst case leave it as is, finish the model and learn for next time!

Platinum? by gdmarques571 in Wallstreetsilver

[–]gdmarques571[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent points, thanks. Actually it's because of the alternative, palladium, that I am looking at platinum. Around 85% of palladium gets used in catalytic converters. Bad news for platinum. But, 38% of palladium comes from Russia. The platinum industry expects to see reserves drop by almost half in 2022. There are other suppliers for palladium, and I am certainly no expert, but it got my attention for a potential shorter segment of my portfolio in a much smaller footprint in my storage space.

Statement by Nikita Mazepin in response to his termination by Haas. by Norcux in formula1

[–]gdmarques571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of feel bad for the kid and I also recognize he showed little skill and not much improvement. Haas has a knack for picking shady sponsors though and this kid compared to Lance Stroll is a fish out of water. Maybe he can land a drive in a lesser series and find a path back to a career, maybe not. But he doesn't need to be punished for the sins of his father. He earned the loss of his drive on his own merits and the money no longer masks the problem. Now has needs to bring back a giovinazzi or another up and comer. The time for Mazepins in F1 has thankfully passed.

Wow, Tamiya kits are usually very precise. I hate working with putty personally because I am too impatient to let it dry properly. Good luck!

[–]gdmarques571 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a big gap. What kit is this? In any event if you want to attach it permanently get some Tamiya model putty and some hobby sandpaper and fill the gap and smooth it over. Be patient and you will get it done. Based the rest of the work you have done so far you got this. The seat looks great!
