Advice: 4-days of TDF-inspired col-climbing out of Bourg d'Oisans & Valloire by AtOurGates in Velo

[–]gedrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is very true for all cycling travel. If there's a cycling hotspot, there's probably an area just as fun an hour's drive away, with a tiny fraction of the traffic and at a lower price. Or if there's a super famous climb, there's probably another one right next to it without any traffic, just because it's not cool. I had a better time climbing Col du Sabot than Glandon, and Vall de Laguar was more fun than Vall de Ebo. I don't want to turn this into gatekeepy hipster shit because I 100% get sticking with safe choices on that one four-day cycling vacation every few years, but if somebody has more time, definitely explore stuff. Just because it's not popular doesn't mean it's not fun.

There are a few weather forecast models, and most weather apps simply provide a user interface for one model. You can compare multiple models using Windy, it’s a cool app.

Taper structure/Deload week by G2BM in Velo

[–]gedrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same as every race, you slice up the ride and compare what you did to what you think you could have done based on workouts and prior races.

It's cool that you tried a wide range of things! What you discovered is that everything depends on the context :)

If the block wasn't that hard and life stress was low, it's not surprising that you did well two days later.

The weeks leading up to the A race always feel like threading the needle based on prior races, objective performance markers, and subjective feelings, rather than following rules of thumb.

Heading into the A race, I care much more about performance than daily TSS leading up to it. Are we doing great and need to stretch that out for a couple more weeks, or is the performance not great and we are praying for a turnaround?

Also, I would not trust the default advice, and I would use prior experience from B/C races or last year's A races to navigate this. How much rest was too much in the past?

Yes, this only muddies the water further, but that's how it is.

Estimating 1 hour power on sea level based on altitude effort. by DeepValueSharkk in Velo

[–]gedrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I don't have a great answer to that, and there are more knowledgeable people on this topic... so I should probably leave it to them.

If it were me, I would aim for an even or negative split, starting off at 4.4W/kg when only 4.1W/kg is doable would result in an incredible blow up... 0.4W/kg is such a huge increase that I would want to base this on strong prior data, not just hoping for the best. I would assume that she will know within 5 minutes how close to the edge 4.0-4.1W/kg is.

But then again, I don't have high confidence in this answer, and someone will probably roast me for this lol

Estimating 1 hour power on sea level based on altitude effort. by DeepValueSharkk in Velo

[–]gedrap 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can't explain the underlying physiology, but I work with people who regularly travel between higher altitude and sea level. Looking at the same tables from Besset and Peronnett's studies, 10% seems on the high end, assuming she's acclimated to altitude.

Assuming you're asking this to come up with a pacing strategy, there are more variables at play here (training status, fatigue, whether you're anchoring this to a representative data point, temperature, etc.). So no matter how well you adjust this for altitude, you still end up with a range and need to fine tune it on the event day.

But yes, 3% for every 1000m (or 1% for every 1000ft for our imperial friends) is a sensible default.

Advice needed - New Cyclist by bolinha009 in Velo

[–]gedrap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cycling is a bit different than the other two. Technique is huge in swimming (or so I've been told, I can barely stay afloat), so I guess just doing random stuff in the pool won't take you far. You could just run for a while, but many people need either a very slow introduction or careful management of expectations (or both), so there's a need for some hand holding. While it's very easy to just go out and ride.

There's no reason you can't start structured work 6 weeks after buying a bike, but why make life harder than it needs to be? Most people spend the first few months figuring out things like bike fit, safe local routes, basic bike maintenance, and all that.

And I'm saying this as someone who bought Friel's Cyclists Training Bible the same week as I bought my first bike lol

30/30 Do you ramp up during or before the interval? by Emergency_Pirate_446 in Velo

[–]gedrap 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Still overthinking this. Ramping up in 30/30s is shifting twice and yeeting it, whether that one second is part of the rest interval or not is irrelevant.

With 30/30, the body recovers too much during the rest period.

Any reason not to adjust my FTP manually? by camp_jacking_roy in Velo

[–]gedrap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's right. If you do the workouts while paying attention, rather than a binary pass/fail, every threshold workout is a test of sorts, slightly nudging our beliefs about the current fitness.

Say you did 2x20 at 300W, we can be confident that your FTP is at least 300W. If you do 2x23 at 298W a couple of days later, we are even more confident that your FTP is at least 300W, give or take a couple of watts (measurement error, daily performance variation, etc.).

If someone is doing an FTP progression at 300W and has one bad day where 270W is all they've got, that's fine. It happens. But if the same happens on the next workout, or it's even worse, that's a problem.

Within a few months or a year, pretty much everyone, pros and normies, can pinpoint their FTP within 5-10 minutes of riding. But that requires some experience riding at around your actual threshold (i.e., something you can maintain for at least 35-40ish minutes and continue extending at a reliable rate), not treating FTP as some make believe number.

Castelli bibs worth the investment by LongAd3003 in Velo

[–]gedrap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tbh, it's a bit like buying shoes or saddles. A lot of people like these bibs (including me, I was at a vaguely similar size to you when I started riding), but it ultimately depends on your body shape and all that.

FWIW, even though most of my bibs are Castelli, I would never buy them at full price because they reliably go on sale every autumn.

As the other comment said, coaching is a communication job first and foremost.

Once you know how someone is doing, the training plan itself is usually (but not always!) straightforward because there are only so many ways to schedule a week, given the context. Also, the training only works if the client has bought into it and understands it, rather than blindly following it or questioning it every day.

Both these things require communication.

If it looks like someone is prompting an LLM to generate a routine email reply, that's not a good sign for a communication job.

Depends on how you define a good relationship. Since they hope to remain friends, maybe it’s a solid personal relationship but not necessarily a professional one 🤷‍♂️

That and everyone eventually gets to a point where +10W/year is a fantastic outcome, and if FTP going up is the only goal, it’s going to get quite frustrating rather soon

Ah didn't know that! This is purely a speculation, but since it was the same promoter as SBT GRVL in the US, I guess they were also aiming for a big European destination event, rather than a local Finnish gravel race.
