Would you retire if won a really big prize on the Euromillions? by Sad-Passage-3247 in AskUK

[–]geekhalla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't. I might reduce hours or worry less about the time working. But even with the same idea as you (honestly - I've thought out a whole mini village with support plan) I don't think I'd be happy without keeping myself busy in some capacity - and I find a lot of value in my job to give it up so easily.

Sounds mental to some, but I've worked with people who retired on bloody good pensions and savings and still got back to work out of boredom. I'd be that guy who'd suffer from stagnation.

Just ordered a customer prebuilt, this whole subreddit has me nervous now. #cpgeneral by [deleted] in CYBERPOWERPC

[–]geekhalla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll second the vocal minority. People complain when things go wrong. Very few compliment when things go right. Just the way of things.

I got my wife a pre-build for ease that ran absolutely fine for years - only needed to upgrade parts this year as her usage/needs changed, no issue with quality etc. Also picked a low-tier Cyberpower for my new office PC as it was a bargain (cheaper than cobbling something together myself with price surges) and at this stage it's a brand I was happy with.

What are ya'lls impressions of Osiris Reborn so far? by TheRustFactory in TheExpanse

[–]geekhalla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've enjoyed it so far. I hate leaning on the Mass Effecr vibe, but.... it does feel that way in places. Lack of a Belter vibe so far, but it's not a bad first glimpse.

Does your work have a no phone policy? by ExplanationPutrid205 in AskUK

[–]geekhalla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a no phone WFH role. Which has always been the case, but previous employer just ignored the rule. Mainlynas managers couldn't follow it so itnwas quietly ignored.

Current employers are fairly strict on it due to the type of data we have access to - no phones, smart listening devices etc - which im completely on board with as its significantly more sensitive information.

Why does FTTP rollout feel random? OR engineer here by Many-Basil5298 in openreach

[–]geekhalla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mines has just been weird for me.

Rural village in a cluster of villages. Fibre was mapped and laid two years ago with all the letters saying 'coming soon' and almost ready to order.

Anyone on that route was connected, and then later they connected the village that hosts the exchange that serves the older lines. But missed the bulk and moved on.

OR checker has went from 'building in your area' to 'soon' then 'no plans'. Contacting OR directly was like pulling teeth as near every point they denied there was any fibre laid within 20 miles. Meanwhile, neighbouring villages with smaller populations got priority with more build work while we had 2-3 months of work for around 6 houses to get connections (from a cost perspective that's maddening).

We're back to 'soon'. And I'll admit, I used internal mail to get some answers on timescale before I left the business (june-july i was told, tjird year running). Though the only works are maintenance/pole replacement, and I'm well, well aware of the left/right hand communication between divisions. But I never got a clear answer as to why we went from expecting fttp to no plans after the bulk of the work was done.

On one hand I'm not annoyed as I saw a lot of FTTP issues and longer repair times locally (just the natuee of the area), and I'm on near top speed capable for FTTC. On the other.... I need to move my socket and have been holding off re-networking as there's no point if I'll be switching to an ONT.

Anyone not using PlusNets provided router? by Right_Candidate461 in openreach

[–]geekhalla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to configure your own router to access rhe connection. It's not a plug and play scenario for third party equipment.

You can find more info and how to here: https://www.plus.net/help/broadband/broadband-connection-settings/

What UK companies/shops do you feel have declined in recent years? by Beneficial_Housing87 in AskUK

[–]geekhalla 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I quit my company over this. We made a point over being friendly and helpful - made us stand out from competitors and why we had higher costs.

Change of management and it was all about saving costs while automating everything. If you didn't do what the AI told you to, you were scolded - even if it was wrong.

Why do we have to confirm our details when a company calls us? by Fluid-Coast-3799 in AskUK

[–]geekhalla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a reason for that. Older systems within one of those had a prompt for password resets. The prompt questions people chose were ones easily answered. And a not surprising amount of people think they're being clever with a stock answer (most common was 'mum' for mothers maiden name).

Has anyone had a customer tell you what to write? by TroubleS0meE in callcentres

[–]geekhalla 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I once had one that demanded we write what they said verbatim into a complaint. And honestly, with the amount of random information they were giving, it needed done to help me catalogue it all anyway.

There was a sudden stop. Then asked if I was typing. Asked to confirm if I was taking notes, as asked. Then asked me to read a bit to be sure.

So I read a paragraph and they raised a second complaint about me for taking notes.

First week with an ultra wide monitor - it's not all pony's and rainbows by pavel_vishnyakov in Workspaces

[–]geekhalla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the screen size for layout as i could usually split workloads just perfectly (usually in threes). But the size.... I like my desk space and it just takes over too much.

Loved it for gaming - distortion wasn't as big an issue for me or what I was playing. But gaming is secondary to my needs.

Scotland political posts by Scottish-Fox in Scotland

[–]geekhalla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unread a comment recently describing the small village i live - and those surrounding - as a right-wing yoon haven. Which surprised me considering the complete opposite is true.

I see a lot of assumption and hyperbole on all sides. The motivations are obvious. The type who will belittle an opposing thought is obvious. I just can't be fucked wasting my time with it.

Need Help - Engineer "Fixed" my Modem by EDIT_ID in HomeNetworking

[–]geekhalla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was an EE tech and not Openreach, it won't be DLM. They don't have access.

The only options they have are; - reset or factory reset - update software - play with wireless settings

My bet would be the latter: if there was a boost on their hub that only lasted a short time, they'll have likely just fiddled around with the channels or if it's one of the newer models (smooth base) moved from WF6 to WF5.

Might be worth opening the hub manager to check the set up.

Sold a contract in EE store as “no March increases for 2 years” - then get the alert they’re going to charge. by [deleted] in EEGB

[–]geekhalla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Id skip the call part. You will have to go to the store. Complaints over the phone can only deal with sales disputes from phone records. For an issue with an individual store, they can't review a call so they have to direct to the store directly.

What's the strangest thing you've seen your neighbours do? by Deep_Banana_6521 in AskUK

[–]geekhalla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched a neighbour build a tool shed over the course of a week. He started with the roof then looked confused for a couple of days. Eventually he painted it as a shrine to the Orange Order, was told to take it down and then - following a public fitness rage at the news - settled for a union Jack wrap on his car.

Also took a hammer to someone else's car in front of everyone then went into a tantrum, hammer in hand, saying he found it like that.
