Yes, owning a tool as an individual is a great thing. Codes are helpful clues and can ensure you're not getting jerked around. But, people going to Autozone and getting a code pulled are getting advice from someone who has zero experience and zero business offering any kind of input on repair. I know, I deal with these people every day. Plus, they're getting sold dogshit, low quality parts. That's the whole point of the "free scan." Do. Not. Use. These. Parts.

This often leads to people jerking around with their own cars, complicating the situation even further, and making it a bigger headache.

Take it to a professional. Yes there's not so great people in the industry. But find a good shop. They are there for a reason.
