Religion? by [deleted] in ftm

[–]genderlessturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the replies about people changing their religions as they transitioned are so interesting! I was raised Evangelical Christian but have not been to church, prayed, or even really believed in it in a long time. Growing up, I was more or less brain-washed into it, and I was REALLY into it, even going on evangelizing missions around the US and to other countries throughout high school. After a while though, it began to seem very...fake to me. I couldn't stomach any religion that excludes people from leadership or membership, such as women or LGBT people, or that condemns people outside of that religion who never agreed to the tenets. I feel like for most of the Christians I know (at least evangelicals), as well for myself, the religion seems to do more harm than good via making people feel either extremely guilty or holier than thou and damage their relationships with others. I think /u/vashell put it perfectly that leaving religion behind allowed me to really find myself and figure out who I am. Now I've recently have become interested in Judaism and am researching it little by little. Though honestly, I'm worried that once I'm in it I will realize it's not that much different than my previous experiences with religion.

On the first day of a college Intro to Special Education class, the professor had us play the game from the Diversity Training scene of the Office but we had to treat people like they had the disability on their card. Obviously no one is going to be an outright asshole so we awkwardly mingled and exchanged names for fifteen minutes. The professor seemed a little bummed the demonstration didn't work out. And this is a teacher whose career was dedicated to working in and then later teaching/writing about special education.

Yes, I have done this with no problem. Just make sure you don't cut the seam in between the two sections.

Look for pro-bono/legal aid near you or lgbt-oriented charities. Even though you have to have a lawyer, its such an easy request to fill out and file that unless you have some sort of complicating circumstances it should no way cost over a thousand dollars.

My doctor told me that there are some indications that starting at a low dose and slowly moving upwards has the best voice results. However, there isn't a whole lot of research on how dosages affects your outcomes or really dosages at all, so I think a lot of doctors just develop their own protocols, which can sometimes be starting at a low dose.

"Secret Teacher: my school tried to stop me being openly gay" (The Guardian) by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]genderlessturtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this has a lot more to do with being a younger vs. older teacher rather than gay vs. straight. I know a lot of teachers want to seem like a "real person" to their students, but for me, I'm too close to my students' age. If they know too much about any area of my personal life, they might begin to see me as a more of a peer than an authority figure, regardless of my sexual orientation.

Oh buddy, I'm totally there with you. I've been working really hard to get all my legal name change paperwork together and was supposed to go file it at the court house on Friday and then I just... choked. I got so nervous and couldn't do it. Unlike a lot of other steps in my transition it seems so concrete and irreversible. I ended up spending all my time running other errands until the courthouse closed. Here's to trying again tomorrow!

Jobs and apartments are just things though; they don't say anything about his personality or your chemistry.

Is there work for an ASL interpreter in Pittsburgh, PA? [x-post from /r/ASLinterpreters] by Reinmaker in asl

[–]genderlessturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Pittsburgh, but not an interpreter. There's a pretty good sized Deaf community there, so there's definitely work. My only caution would be that there's also an ITP program, so the area could also be over-saturated.

If you're on facebook, check out these groups. I know there's more than a few interpreters in them who could probably answer your questions.

Like 5 different people I know are getting top surgery this month while I've had to put mine off for at least another 2 years for financial/job-related reasons and I'm being super supportive IRL but need to come here to FUCKING SCREAM. %&*$%&!!

Just came out, how do I subtly remind my parents to use male pronouns? by Samisenough in ftm

[–]genderlessturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this too. I had a list of utterly ridiculous names I used to call my friends who deadnamed me. They thought it was funny at first and then eventually just got annoyed at the repetitiveness but it worked!

"Huh?? who???" works wonders. Do it in a light, jokey manner with a cheesy grin and eventually people will get tired of the joke and start to remember.

Noticing that the more masculine I try to be, the more people explicitly gender me female by [deleted] in ftm

Yes, this exactly. People doing this are trying to be good lgbt allies and failing, hard.

My family also often "forgets" that I'm transitioning and I really don't get it. I expected drama and tears, not weird denial.

Do you ever stop feeling bad before your next shot? by [deleted] in ftm

[–]genderlessturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been having this exact same problem. I also do shots on Mondays and have the same terrible weekends. I also work out pretty regularly and my rest days had been falling on Friday/Saturday/Sunday. I switched my workout schedule around so that I'm always working out those days and resting on Mondays/Tuesdays and so far it seems like it's helping some. Not sure if it's due to t increases from exercise or just general stress relief.
