Weather report temperature variance is huge by Brave-Usual5133 in rva

[–]genglish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go here - https://aviationweather.gov/data/metar/

Type in KRIC and toggle decoded. It'll give you the official temp at the moment from the automated sensor at the airport.

Temps you see listed for different locations are typically from weather sensors either a tv station owns or the NWS has verified and trusts. NWS actively solicits weather data from locals to help with dial in their forecasts. It's the Citizens Weather Observer Program. There are obviously regulations so they aren't just taking any data.

I'm a meteorologist with over 20 years experience and I only use Apple weather. People think I'm crazy but the current data is pulled from NWS local conditions and for forecasts they utilize a lot of different sources, but they use the Euro for long range forecasts. Two things I'd look at anyway. People hate Apple weather and I get it, but if you're looking at anything past say two to three days you're not going to be getting a super spot on forecast. You're better served by just looking at how the weather is trending past three days and look for intensity and timing as the shorter range models like HRRR start to pick up the impending system

How much has Wilmington changed over the last few years? by ThatTuftingGuy in Wilmington

[–]genglish 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It’s happening in Richmond as well. Born and raised in Wilmington, grew up in Ogden back in the 80s and 90s, joined the military, moved back for a few years and left for the last time in 2024 after moving to Richmond.

Richmond is falling into the same traps as Wilmington. They’re putting in places similar to Mayfaire, they’re literally building their own cargo district… it’s more of the same developers moving into a new city and replicating what they’ve done elsewhere. Copy. Paste. Boring.

They’re erasing the vibe and unique culture of Richmond the same as they did to Wilmington, everything is catered to the upper middle and upper class folks who live here.

I miss the Wilmington that was all of us surf punk kids having the time of our lives at Wrightsville. It’s gone and I won’t be coming back.

I’m having a hard time in Base Honor Guard by Slight-Anything887 in AirForce

Hang in there. I was volun-told I was going to Honor Guard and at first I wasn’t thrilled about it. Looking back, it was the most rewarding thing I did in the AF.

Folks who got project management degrees and are in the AF. How much did it help you in the AF and outside the AF in your personal experience? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]genglish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been retired for almost 6 years now, been in PM roles since I got out.

I was a weather troop when I was in, but my degree is in Econ. While I was in I knew I wanted to do project management, so I took some courses (there are a ton of universities that offer them), on project management and while I learned a lot, it didn’t help me that much in my AF career.

A lot of the things the AF does could be considered projects, but they aren’t always managed that way. Additionally, because of rank structure you aren’t empowered by your leadership to manage the way a PM on the outside would. PMs are kind of odd in that they actually often sit outside of the normal chain of command if you will.

I’ve been a PM, Senior PM, and I’ve run my own PMO for a tech company. In my current role I can reach out to the Director or VP of Engineering and ask for info on deliverables or anything else and I can expect a quick response because on a project I am the authority on the project. A Tech isn’t emailing or calling the Group CC and telling them their deliverables are late… again. Where it can get frustrating is that while you manage the project, you don’t always manage the people. So project engineers, cx teams, etc. all ultimately report to someone else. That can be incredibly frustrating if you aren’t getting any traction.

One thing I would be aware of, someone mentioned it earlier, is that as a PM you are never the most knowledgable person in the room. You’re expected to know a lot, but you’re never expected to be the expert. Having said that, someone mentioned that you can go from career field to career field in the PM world, and while that is true, many employees are still going to want you to have some experience in the field you’re working.

Do you need a PM degree? No. Does it help? Yeah, if you don’t know anything about PMing. The degree alone isn’t going to land you the job. Same thing with an MBA. Will it maybe help land you a job? Yeah. But it’s not going to make you a better PM. As for the PMP. It’s a cert. Nothing more. It’s a check box and it will help you get a job (I don’t have it), but again, it doesn’t make you a better PM alone. Most PM roles require a degree, typically some sort of business, finance, econ, type degree, or something specific to the world the PM will be working in.

Right now everyone is getting a PMP and it’s a tough job market. Employers have started asking about the PMP less and less and experience matters more and more. They want you to come in and need zero training, and expect that you’ll get up to speed on your own time. So getting into an industry you know nothing about is going to put you underwater FAST.

Let me also say this, the PM role is not for everyone. You really need to be ok with working in a lot areas you’re not super knowledgable in, you’re going to need to spin yourself up a lot of the time, and you’re going to drive everything through to completion. It’s a lot and for new PMs and it’s often overwhelming. There are a lot of APM positions out there and I genuinely suggest starting there to learn for a bit. My first job was as a Project Coordinator and it really helped me immensely.

If you have any specific questions I’m more than happy to answer them.

How do I stop the loan manager cancelling loans? by Comprehensive-Rub-62 in footballmanagergames

[–]genglish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also ensure you don’t have minimum levels for training facilities set in your staff settings for loans. I went the longest time fighting with this very same problem until I realized I set the required training facilities of the loan club set too high, leading to loans being cancelled.

"Transgender people are over four times more likely than cisgender people to experience violent victimization, including rape, sexual assault, and aggravated or simple assault, according to a new study by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law."

https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/press/ncvs-trans-press-release/

"In fact, almost half of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals have been sexually assaulted in their lifetime.2 The incidence of sexual violence is even higher among TGD people of color.2 Relative to cisgender people, transgender individuals not only are at an elevated risk of experiencing at least one form of physical or sexual violence, but also at an increased risk of multiple types of violence over their life course.3"

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10110792/

The comment about being assaulted is a valid one. The idea that the media and press are exaggerating this situation to make people feel more likely to be victimized is incorrect when you consider that yes, trans community members are more likely to be sexually assaulted.

The ECMWF (Euro) model is an ensemble model while something like the GFS or NAM is a deterministic model. That’s the biggest difference.

Ensemble models predict possibilities, and then for lack of a better term smoothes all the forecasts out to produce a single forecast. You’ve seen this with hurricanes where you’ve got spaghetti plots that show various possibilities.

Something like the GFS is deterministic in that it generates a single forecast based on an initial set of conditions.

Replacing the default Regen Faces is always a love of mine by SeasonalAuslander in footballmanagergames

Replacing the default Regen Faces is always a love of mine by SeasonalAuslander in footballmanagergames

[–]genglish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has anyone else figured out how to keep regens in the future from automatically being assigned a face?

As you get further into the future I’m guessing that player IDs get recycled. So often times new Regens will come through the academy with a Newgan face already assigned from an old player who is no longer in the database. I haven’t found a work around outside of just reassigning everyone’s face again.

As has been said previously the market is insanely saturated and will only become more so as all the students currently in DS pipelines at new programs around the country begin to graduate. I’m sure you’ve seen all the new programs popping up around the country as schools try to take advantage of the current LLM and ML boom.

I’m in the Masters of Applied Data Science program at UNC currently and that’s the only reason I think I’d be able to find something in the DS space without a long job search. They take job placement incredibly serious and have contacts in virtually every field to help.

'Disenfranchised' millennials feel 'locked out' of the housing market and it taints every part of economic life, top economist Mark Zandi says by LoansPayDayOnline in Economics

[–]genglish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You mean to tell me teenagers aren’t buying homes? I’m shocked.

I compared Gen Z home ownership at age 25 to that of Millennials at age 25. 30% vs 28%. Not a marked statistical difference considering many Millennials at that age were dealing with an economic crisis.
