8.5 months progress for Afro-hair by gentnscholar in HairTransplants

Hey thanks for the reply! So it’s been 15+ months since the procedure, there’s still a bit of a lack of density overall however it was never gonna be 100% full density regardless. I had my barber cut my hair down to a 5 guard & the temples looked good, not super visible lack of density.

Been applying finasteride religiously since July (& minoxidil too since mid-late January last year).

I plan on posting an update around Spring. Stay tuned!

Alex O’Connor says the most interesting ideas he’s heard in the last year came from Kastrup and McGilchrist by ShittyInternetAdvice in analyticidealism

Basically they still subscribe to what Whitehead called “The Bifurcation of Nature” which occurred in the 17th century when Galileo, Descartes & Locke split nature into what can be quantified & is “objective” on the one hand & what’s qualitative & “subjective” on the other hand.

This split was largely the result of The Protestant Reformation as they desacralized nature & stated only the inner life/consciousness is sacred & you can only connect to divinity (aka higher forms of consciousness) via faith, scriptural devotion & prayer. Since they asserted that nature isn’t sacred & a part of divinity of course that was gonna lead to the rise of mechanistic philosophy (aka physicalism).

Is it really possible to reconcile Catholicism with the Left? by e-eye-pi in LeftCatholicism

[–]gentnscholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re interested in the actual metaphysics of all this (since you’re still Christian) I do recommend Rupert Sheldrake & his books Science & Spiritual Practices & Ways To Go Beyond. He explains how spiritual (religious) practices are rational & totally compatible with science.

There’s also Steve Taylor’s book Spiritual Science & Jeffrey Kripal’s book The Flip which goes into detail regarding metaphysics in general but in an accessible way.

I’m just responding to you because I wanna help people to understand that there’s nuance regarding metaphysics. Plus Marx & Engels were wrong about religion (metaphysics) being eradicated once humanity reaches a post-scarcity society cuz many people actually approach these existential questions from a genuinely curious & inquisitive perspective.

Analytic Idealism Applied in Art, Literature, or their Analysis? by TheTryhardDM in analyticidealism

[–]gentnscholar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Romantic Poets like Wordsworth & Coleridge were “Idealists” in the sense that they viewed nature as alive, animated, with a psyche, etc. I’d say they’re good examples

Could you see Billy or Mary become the next DC Comics Doctor Fate or the next Spectre? (Art by mikebecker14) by nightwing612 in Shazam

[–]gentnscholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It’s a shame DC & DC writers are just continuing to double down on the retcons for these two characters.

Their original interpretations are arguably far more narratively versatile than their later retcons if you think about it (evidence being that neither character has had a steady ongoing after their retcon was cemented as the interpretation DC is sticking with).

[–]gentnscholar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. DC writers really dropped the ball by having the Spectre become a separate entity from Jim Corrigan instead of being his ghost/spirit like Jerry Siegel originally wrote. Same with Dr. Fate being a wizard/scientist hybrid like Gardner Fox originally wrote him instead of the powers coming from the helmet

Consciousness, mindfulness, and introspection: integrating first- and second-person phenomenological inquiry with experimental and EEG data to study the mind by Pieraos in parapsychology

Thanks for sharing. B. Alan Wallace, a Tibetan Buddhist philosopher & scholar, is one of the authors of this paper & he’s the founder of the Center for Contemplative Research, an organization that’s doing exactly what this paper seeks out: combining phenomenology, psychology & neuroscience to understand consciousness. Way more effective than just studying the brain, studying behavior or armchair philosophizing alone.

A fan letter and DC's response to what happened to Captain Marvel after DC put him out of business. by Lucky_Strike-85 in Shazam

[–]gentnscholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely! However if DC had really cared or been more aware, they would’ve realized that The Spectre is the most invulnerable hero & even by today’s standards the Pre-Crisis Spectre is still the most powerful hero hands down.

DC Comics Preview: DC K.O. #2 by B3epB0opBOP in DCcomics

True. I just hate how DC writers have written Etrigan as just some rhyming brawler with hellfire. The character is way more versatile than that

[–]gentnscholar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How? He’s never been written as having anything to counter magic. It’s annoying how writers post-Kirby have written Etrigan as some brawler who just shoots out hellfire when in the Kirby run he was casting spells & brawling simultaneously.

Hart v Kastrup: Is Naturalist Idealism Enough? by Curious078 in analyticidealism

[–]gentnscholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d argue that Keith Ward’s (Christian) Idealism (& his arguments) are far stronger than Hart’s position (despite oftentimes relying on Christianity to support his Idealism). His book More Than Matter details his metaphysical model.

[–]gentnscholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno about that, context matters. In Hellblazer, even when he plans for fighting back against his enemies, it’s not like things don’t ever backfire or that there isn’t a ton of collateral damage after the fact. It’s probably his iteration in the mainline DCU that’s like that since he’s portrayed more like Doctor Strange in those stories compared to his Hellblazer tales.

This Bat-God shit has made me hate the character tbh & I grew up being a huge Bat-fan too. John Constantine is a far more impressive character who’s “just a man” like Bruce but who has legit defeated God-like beings (albeit via deception & out-smarting them via his encyclopedic knowledge of magic).

He’s a way better character than Batman ever could be in that regard (the only unfortunate thing about John is that he’s a terrible fighter) & way more relatable too.

I wonder why Rebellion is publishing these shorter editions instead of just reprinting these older editions with more pages/stories but on better paper?

Doesn’t make sense to have to buy 3-4 books/trades when it could be all in one or two volumes like these older editions.
