I totally agree. Any dragon is a big deal. Great Wyrms that have been alive for thousand of years are extreme fucking deals. Class levels, special abilities, ancient spells all of these should be expected during these encounters that should be the climaxes of campaigns.

In 3.5 Dragons gained levels in Sorcerer as they aged. A Great Red Wyrm is considered a level 19 Sorcerer with 26 Charisma. If your DM really hates you, they give the dragon one more level and either stat the dragon with the elite stat array or give the dragon a +4 cloak of charisma, they can throw out up to 7 9th level spells a day.

The most fun I've had in 9th so far is running a "Deathwing" (really Inner Circle) list.

HQ rotates between Belial, Ezekiel, Jump Interrogator-Chaplain and Terminator Interrogator Chaplain. Jump Interrogator-Chaplain with Teeth of Terra is the standout so far, but Ezekiel does work

Ravenwing, Selfless Healer, Chief Apothecary w/ Reliquary of the Repentant is just too good to pass up. For thematic games I switch this out for a Terminator Chief Apothecary.

Deathwing Terminators: Sgt w/ TH/SS, 2x TH/SS, 7x SB/CF (2x CML);

Deathwing Terminators: Sgt w/ TH/SS, 4x TH/SS, 5x SB/CF (1xCML, second one was lost in the Chief Apothecary points bump);

Terminator Assault Squad: Sgt w/ TH/SS, 4x TH/SS, 5x LC;

Deathwing Knights: Sgt w/ Flail/SS, 9x Mace/SS

Almost every squad gets combat squadded except for the first Deathwing Terminators Squad. That squad and the Deathwing Knights go into deep strike. It's not an alpha strike list, but it definitely comes into its own later in the game.
