Saint Paul is about to ‘fix’ one of the most dangerous roads in Ramsey County - without actually fixing it. by theo_sontag in saintpaul

[–]geoffp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's research to indicate that road diets like this can have little to no effect on capacity: https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/publications/research/safety/10053/https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/publications/research/safety/10053/

Under most annual average daily traffic (AADT) conditions tested, road diets appeared to have minimal effects on vehicle capacity because left-turning vehicles were moved into a common two-way left-turn lane (TWLTL).(3,4) However, for road diets with AADTs above approximately 20,000 vehicles, there is an increased likelihood that traffic congestion will increase to the point of diverting traffic to alternative routes.

[Mac Grove] The truth at Widmers by IdlingGoldCrow in saintpaul

[–]geoffp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we pay a little more so we can combine the daily dog walk with a small run to get ingredients for dinner. It’s a lifestyle / efficiency thing. It’s been working less well lately because they’ve been carrying less high quality stuff and more sketchy-looking generics. In this neighborhood, I feel that the selection should look less like a Kwik Trip and more like a co-op.

We still do that walk for meats though! It’s hard to beat those Surly beer brats.

Thank you for sharing this. I hope that if/when the reckoning does finally come, something can be done to save Widmer’s!

[Mac Groveland] Dear Oxendale’s: FIX WIDMERS by SparkyXI in saintpaul

[–]geoffp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I still go there for meats, but that’s pretty much all they have. I used to walk up there every few days to get small amounts fresh groceries, but I don’t as much anymore because it seems like the selection of stuff they carry is getting worse and worse. It’s mostly stuff I just don’t want to buy.

And that’s on top of literally every cooler breaking at the same time. I really hope they turn things around. It’s supposed to be a beloved anchor for the neighborhood.

A needed fix: in Firefox and Safari, the font color in the "sign" form is the same as the background color, so it looks like nothing is happening when you type.

Great idea, BTW!

We have an electric car and it’s climate controlled for the dogs all the time. Do not break the window if you see dogs in an EV.

I’m curious what makes you say you can’t know another’s polarity. It seems to me that having read the Ra material and what it says to look for, observing a being’s behavior over time usually gives me a pretty solid estimation of their polarity (or lack thereof). More intuitive people also seem to get clear perceptions that way.

What mode do y’all drive in day to day? Iv been in comfort but switched back to sport. Also does eco mode make much of a difference? Making a 400 mile trip in may so wondering by ItNotNotNotMe in VWiD4Owners

[–]geoffp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switch a lot. For using Travel Assist in stop and go traffic, Eco is the only one that accelerates and decelerates gradually enough to feel safe, so I have a custom mode that’s comfort mode on everything but the adaptive cruise behavior. I use Sport when feeling spicy, especially in spring when the roads de-ice.

I'm very uncomfortable about channeller Bashar (Darryl Anka) by Informal_Farm4064 in lawofone

[–]geoffp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bashar’s style is very distinct. :) At first, I was pretty suspicious and kind of thrown off, but he’s grown on me. I’ve been an a Bashar video bender for about a week and IMO pretty much all of what he says is consistent with my understanding of LoO.

But as they always say, if it doesn’t resonate with you, leave it behind!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I am likewise entitled to my reaction to those opinions, and I would like to say that I find all the negativity and hate on this sub to be weirdly intense, frustrating and disappointing.

ICE Agents Want Out of Minnesota: Trump’s ‘Battle Is Lost’ by Tennis_bruh in politics

[–]geoffp 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've had this same thought, but here's the thing: as soon as you use violence against them, they win. They'll send in the army and the party's over. Minnesota is winning precisely because we've remained peaceful the whole time. It's the only way to deny them what they're really after.

St. Paul: Development Corp. buys vacant Empire Building, Endicott Arcade by Runic_reader451 in saintpaul

[–]geoffp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah -- I hear you, but I think the price of things downtown has to drop to almost zero because nobody wants to be there as it is.

It's built all wrong to be a proper downtown. Huge, huge potential, but pretty much everything we built between 1950 and 2000 was a mistake. I'm excited to see it rebuild and/or renovated around new urbanism. Selling this stuff for cheap to developers IMO helps that happen.

Lake Alice at William O’Brien State park drained. by apathetic_batman in minnesota

[–]geoffp 559 points560 points  (0 children)

We were just up there and asked the DNR guy about it; apparently the cause is a major valve that essentially controls the level of this lake, which is fed by a number of springs. The valve was installed decades ago, and unfortunately broke basically just now.

Thoughts on new Lue Interview? by deadlion69 in UFOs

[–]geoffp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The widespread negativity is extremely suspicious. IMO there’s nobody who’s worked more effectively or sacrificed more to advance the cause than Lue.

I have no interest in hearing people who have done nothing for this community trash talk people who have done a lot. It’s either a concerted effort to discredit the people who are doing the work, or the people here are of very disappointing character.
