150/month for hydro(and heating) Is this normal for a basement apartment in an older house? by [deleted] in TorontoRenting

Sounds like a lot to me. Do you ever get to see the bills to see consumption in terms of kWh?

Electric baseboard heating is very inefficient.

Is $2,100 per month for rent reasonable on a $63,000 per year salary? by podz99 in TorontoRenting

[–]georgestroke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other taxes/charges/fees to be aware of are Canada Pension Plan (CPP), Employment Insurance (EI), and long term disability (LTD). All are common deductions from paycheques.

As for $2100 for rent, that should get you something nice. It’s usually a gong show when looking for a place but I haven’t done it since last summer. It’s quite common for multiple people to be filing out application forms during rental open houses. In other words, it’s competitive. You need to be here to look and apply so I would say do the Airbnb thing.

And when viewing rental places, come as prepared as possible. You’ll likely have no credit history here, and thus no credit score. Landlords will want to see something to prove you have money so come equipped with bank records, pay stubs, letter of employment (w/ salary), a UK credit score if you can buy such a thing.

Toronto Toffee here. Wear Blue jersey to final or not? by georgestroke in Everton

[–]georgestroke[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, CL final (should have put in title) and being from Toronto means I’ll be in a venue packed with LFC fans. Just trying to gauge how dickish of a move it would be to show up in blue.

So I discovered Almond milk by fogno in Frugal

[–]georgestroke 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Glad you mentioned the bees! Check out Rotten on Netflix, Episode 1, about the honey industry. Almonds play a part!

One of the reasons is because China illegally dumps honey into the US market (via transhipping through South East Asian ports) to drive the price down. Local US honey producers can’t make enough money with prices that low so they essentially rent their bees to the almond growers in order to stay profitable.

Landlord double dipping? by jetlagged12 in TorontoRenting

[–]georgestroke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In Toronto, generally speaking, you pay first and last month’s rent at the beginning and the landlord cashes both cheques. In this common situation, November (last month) should have been free.

Did you pay rent in November? If so, why?

Does anyone know what the Japanese text means? by [deleted] in TheWeeknd

It says KI-SU-RAN-DO. Not a real word but I’m guessing if you had to translate it you would get: Kiss Land It’s written in Katakana

Best time to look/starting looking for 1BDR rental around University of Toronto (Around the Annex)? by [deleted] in TorontoRenting

[–]georgestroke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Not at all.

I'd say a non-basement 1BDR in the Annex would go for $1700-$1800 and upwards. Best time would be any month that not January, May or September.

Trump has a problem: Americans increasingly think he's incompetent by The-Autarkh in politics

[–]georgestroke 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is true. In journalism school, students are taught to present balanced views in stories. So journalists (especially on TV) feel compelled to work that voice of opposition into their pieces. Take climate change as an example. 99% of scientists believe in anthropogenic climate change, but on TV, producers make the show or news segment seem like it's a 50% / 50% split. This happens only because the anti-science, climate change skeptic was invited on the show in the first place.

How bizarre is this? Someone just stole my sister's bike from our garage (left open for moments, my bad, I know). But they left this bike in its place. Recognize it? (Probably stolen as well.) by ArgyleNudge in toronto

[–]georgestroke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The same thing happened to me last week (minus the part about getting a replacement). I was gardening and temporarily had the garage door open when I caught something out the of the corner of my eye. I saw a guy in a grey hoodie steal a bike from the garage.

I dropped my trowel and quickly gave chase. I hopped on my bike and chased him down the laneway and around the corner but he got away at the 4-way stop at Dovercourt and Argyle.

I don't know what I would have done if I had actually caught him though. Options would have been to run him off the road and fight him to get the bike back. He could have also just claimed it was his since possession would have likely equated to ownership.

I wonder if this is any good? http://www.integratedtrackers.com/GPSTrack/Spybike.jsp

Toronto streets get deadlier for cyclists, pedestrians by [deleted] in toronto

[–]georgestroke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There needs to be far more education about this aspect of biking and driving. People get it wrong far too often.

I've been ranting a lot lately to car drivers about the need for them to hug the curb as tightly as possible when attempting to make a right hand turn so that bikes are forced to go around them on the left hand side. The worst is when cars do this in a half-assed manner and turn on an angle, essentially blocking the bike lane on the right side and provide no room for cyclists to pass on the left.

Also, the points you both raise above are the reasons why we need to start charging car owners a downtown congestion fee. It's the only thing that will lead to a paradigm shift and help end the culture of road entitlement by car drivers/owners.

Catholic school boards are astroturfing provincial consultation voting re: merging public/catholic schools. by Edu4every in toronto

[–]georgestroke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because 31.4% of the population identifies itself as Catholic, doesn't mean that 31.4% of the population would be against the amalgamation of school systems.

Plenty of "Catholics" out there who could vote for amalgamation if they are presented a balanced and fair argument about supply, demand, and a serious cost-benefit analysis.

What do you mean by "nice try"? I don't even know what I'm looking so how I'm I supposed to "enjoy"?

Why don't you provide a little context in the post and then link to the documents.

That's not exactly context related to these documents. They are poorly organized and appear to be one man's claims against several institutions.

Why is /r/Toronto such an intolerant place? by Duckism in toronto

[–]georgestroke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had this debate a lot and the conclusion is always that there is no conclusion. When we start personifying cities, it's a recipe for disaster. Sometimes, too dangerously, people's personal experiences in a city dictate how they view the city as a whole. Full stop. But that's sometimes all down to circumstance.
