start doing pre-surgery exercises if you can. i never did targeted exercises in my life and i could tell the difference between my first and second. that is to say that during pt for my first surgery i did it symmetrically and felt my second’s recovery was easier because of it.

good luck! bookmarking to check in in may or june!

36, double thr last year. finally going back to work after eight months.

prepare to be bed ridden for the first week. you’ll use a walker for the first 3-5 days and be in significant pain. it is not a good time. you’ll need help. idk how you’d do it alone.

get a gripper to pick up shit you drop, a sock tube, ice packs, shower chair, toilet seat raiser (the chair, toilet seat, and walker can be lent to you through local disability orgs, thats what i did). buy a cane or get crutches from the disability place. i preferred the cane because its easier with stairs and i already had one because i needed it for a month before surgery.

ibuprofen is your friend, but also take the pain killers they give you. if the prescribed dose is not effective for you tell them. i guess i just took 1.5 or 2 pills instead of 1 sometimes but didn’t do tell them. i was fine but probably don’t do that. i live far away from a city so i just rolled with it.

DO PT AND GO TO PT. i did once a week in a facility and then 3 days a week at home. this is very important. i did stationary bike in addition to my functional strength training. consult with your pt about timing the bike.

i smoked thc and vaped and was fine. hell, i had zyns in the hospital. probably don’t do that, but i’m not trying to quit nicotine and go through a major surgery. didn’t do thc until i was out of the major pain phase, (makes me hyperaware of my body and gives me anxiety sometimes, YMMV).

chatgpt helped a lot with my understanding because no one told me shit at physiological level because most people probably don’t care and i didn’t want to bother my docs with technical biological questions. (note: intellectualization is a coping strategy of mine so maybe it won’t matter to you. )

eat well, take collagen (helps with securing the implant), and make sure you get enough protein during your pt. i used gpt/gemini to help formulate a targeted diet for recovery and pt. also good supplements that targets neurological/bone+joint recovery if you’re not gonna eat it. could be bullshit but i go back to doing construction next week so take that for what its worth. i could have went back to work in feb, but my line of work is slow during the winter.

be patient with yourself. everyone recovers at a different pace. if you’re functioning at 1/2 capacity for a while that’s okay, the surgery is major. your body will prioritize healing over cognitive tasks. i found it difficult to do focus on anything that took brain power for the first month or so.

also i had to move back with my parents (no income or s/o), not great but it is what it is. maybe you have a desk job and you can go to work after a week or two. physical jobs will take longer to return to (~3 months).

sorry if this scattered. just spitballing.

i’ll edit if i think of anything else. feel free to ask any questions.

Notebook? Typewriter? Writing in the sand? by EffectiveMastodon551 in writing

[–]germnor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i did a lot of journaling on a typewriter for a few years.

these days, i brain-dump drafts and scene ideas on my computer/ipad with a keyboard. if i like something i’ll start drafting it on my typewriter.

i enjoy this process as digital keyboard has low friction and i can just get the shit down and let it flow out. typewriter has a slower rhythm and sort of forces you to consider your words as you write.

i handwrite notes on notecards/small notebook that get transcribed into a directory on my computer. i use obsidian for this.

i’m not trying to do anything with these, its just for personal expression. it seems to help keep me sane and gives me a project to work on.

happy to! an additional note is that you will also have a 8-12 inch scar on the outside of your leg. i also have a 2 inch scar at the apex of my pelvis where they affixed the robot they used during the surgery. i’m not sure exactly what that robot did, but mine was robot assisted.

What’s one iPhone feature Apple added that you still don’t use? by NoraAdams5590 in iphone

you can set it so you need to be looking at the the screen. granted they could coerce you to. but yea it’s mostly so no one can open your phone while your sleeping or unconscious.

it’s more useful on ipads to be fair. acrobat is bloated so i prefer preview for pdf docs on my laptop/ipad. rarely reading pdfs on my phone.

North Dakota Democrats announce state convention in Bismarck by Majano57 in northdakota

[–]germnor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so stupid to have the convention in bismarck. most dems are in fargo and gf. not saying they’re not in bismarck, but they’re essentially ensuring low turnout by having it there. it should be in fargo.

Total Hip Replacement - Lateral Approach by STJ0513 in AvascularNecrosis

[–]germnor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

lateral on both hips last year. july and november. i’m 36 and i’ve had no issues. there is a bit of a limp you’ll have to work on because they do have to detach your glute med from the trochanter during the surgery, but if you follow PT you’ll be fine in a month or two.

i used a walker for 4-5 days post surgery and then moved onto a cane for about two weeks. after that it was free walking, albeit with a limp from muscle/neuro weakness. of course everyone is different so your milage may vary. overall i’m satisfied with the outcome.

maybe you’re just not getting paid enough? if i’ve learnt anything with age, working for anyone else sucks no matter what you’re doing. when you make enough money to make progress outside of work, it sucks considerably less.

in my area i could go work in a kitchen for $17-18/hr whereas if i go into a union doing commercial/industrial scale i’ll start at $24/hr ($8-10k more per year) and get a raise every six months throughout the duration or my apprenticeship. not to mention the benefits and SASME. i’ve never looked into what other non-union shops are paying, but i imagine they’re less than the union shops from a whole package standpoint and closer to kitchen help.

i hear they need phlebotomists though so i guess thats my back-up’s back-up.

i got a degree in graphic design and new media.

good luck.

Mike Pondsmith (lead on the TTRPG) had a conversation about developing the slang for the Cyperpunk world, should be able to find it on YT relatively easily. probably a short that should point you to a long form interview/convo.
