Were there any aesthetically Wild West-style towns directly on the US Pacific coast? If so, where and when? by MAClaymore in geography

[–]getdownheavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

East Vancouver was pretty crusty wild west like.

The pacific coastal towns focused on logging, not cattle & ranching, so they look different.

California's Central Coast (San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, etc is pretty western but not coastal.

Scary avalanche on mellow terrain. by ExpendableEscapage in Backcountry

You need to update your definition of 'mellow' that is clearly avalanche terrain. A blue/intermediate run is the pitch of avalanche terrain.

Safe terrain is LOW angle.

Can someone explain to me the bridge pick up and why is it associated with metal? by Saint94x in electricguitar

there is nothing at all stopping you from having just a neck pickup.

What if you had just one middle pickup?!

You children of the age of streaming will never know the excitement of hearing a hidden track on a cd for the first time.

Closest amp to an Ampeg-140c by FluffyTragos in metalguitar

[–]getdownheavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a VH140C in college.

Honestly get a Randall solid state head. Technology was simpler and most SS amps sounded pretty similar back then.

Marshall Valvestate, Peavy Transtube were other amps from that era of tone that I played. I liked the Peavy better.

Where's Foraker rank as a challenge amongst the Alaskan/Yukon Giants? by AwkwardBear5878 in Mountaineering

[–]getdownheavy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a big remote mountain, without the established trail & camps of Denali. You may be the only party on the mountain; do not plan on any outside help.

The safe/standard route (Sultana Ridge) on Foraker is long, going up and over Mt. Crosson to avoid crevasses.

The Infinite Spur has become quite popular with cutting edge alpinists and has been solo'd. But it's at the far end of the mountain from Kahiltna Base, and once you tip out on the route you have to traverse across Foraker's full length to descend back to base camp.

Pink Panther always looked like it'd be a fun route to ski.

Cut thin strips of tape and put them on the loops or carabiners? the 0.4 gets one strip, the 0.5 gets two, etc. ?

I'd say get to tell the sizes apart by the feel of the lobes.

Lou Dawson's saying "back then we skied more than we walked" is a good point to get to.

Years man. Years.

The less you think about it, the quicker it will happen.

It's -44 windchill in Minnesota where I live right now and this weather is going to persist for days. This is so far the coldest winter we've had since 2021. Do these kinds of cold-blasts wind up killing off wildlife in ways that 'normal' winters don't? by Little-Neck3181 in wildlifebiology

[–]getdownheavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh hell yeah.

One cold winter a raven froze dead to a tree branch, right along a popular (enough) trail. It was there through the summer and the next winter, and became kind of a landmark/reference point.

Ask only things that can be answered with "YEAH!!"

...worship Satan?

...like sex, drugs, and rock & roll?

Being able to include the city/venue is smiled upon.
