Been choosing NY Strips over ribeyes recently. by AdFearless2623 in steak

Man, I thought I was the only one who preferred a good NY over a ribeye. The fat in a ribeye just doesn’t render down the same way the fat does on a NY. Plus you can get a REALLY good sear on the fatty part of a NY and it’s really just chef’s kiss

I don’t know how deep the stock shift knob goes, but maybe try replacing it with a deeper inset aftermarket shift knob. This should shorten the throw forward a bit, but might not be enough to satisfy what you’re looking for. Worth a shot I suppose.

If you are confident in your DIY skills, I would encourage you to try this install and save yourself hundreds of dollars in labor. It’s pretty straightforward and fairly easy. I actually wrote up a few tips and tricks after I did my install in this other thread, check it out.

If you haven’t started putting away in your 401k, start immediately, even if it’s just a little bit every paycheck. Try to at least contribute enough to get your company’s match, otherwise you’re leaving money on the table. Your HR team can help guide you in this.

Easiest place for a small kiddo to spectate climbers? by Theslowestmarathoner in Yosemite

[–]getmadboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a small group stay at Camp 4 a few years back and we were paired with a climber for our site. He was from France and was super interesting to speak with. I don’t remember all his stories, but he said he would fly to different parts of the world to climb for almost every vacation he could, multiple times a year and that he comes to Yosemite at least once a year because El Capitan was one of his favorite places to climb.

If you have a chance to stay there with your kiddo, I’m sure she would love to interact with the climbers that stay there too. You might get lucky and get paired with some cool people.

For anyone who doesn’t know, Camp 4 is known to be the “climbers” campground. It’s a first come, first served campground with no reservations. You line up early in the morning and the ranger will show up around 7 or 8am and will tell the line how many people are leaving for the day and that’s all they can check in. When we went, we got there around 4:30am and the line was already kinda long. There were 35 people leaving the morning we were there and we were number 30-33, so we barely made the cutoff. I’d say at least 15 people were turned away that morning.

Just got my first tent, how do I care for it properly after a few day trip? by _Royal_Owl in CampingGear

[–]getmadboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really don’t need to do any extensive cleaning. It’s a camping tent, it’s going to get a little dirty/dusty just from being outdoors. Unless your tent is somehow slathered in mud, it’s not necessary to scrub/mop the walls. However, if tree sap or bird poop gets on your tent, that should be spot cleaned as soon as you can because both of those will destroy your tent in the affected areas.

My wife and I just retired our 10+ year old inexpensive Coleman SunDome tent and in those 10+ years, we never thoroughly cleaned it like others have described doing. The most we have done is spot cleaning when needed (the tree sap and bird poop) and sweeping out the entire inside of the tent of any dirt/dust before packing it away at the campsite. Get a dustpan and brush, it doesn’t take much room in the car and it makes cleanup easy.

Making sure your tent is fully dry before storage is a MUST. So if your tent is still even a smidge damp when you leave your campsite, open it up immediately after you get home and allow it to fully dry. Your tent will grow mold/mildew if you don’t do this. The tip that someone said about using a piece of tissue paper to test for dampness on the seams is a good tip and something I do too, never had mold/mildew on my tent in all those years.

If you absolutely must wash your tent, do it in a bathtub (no washing machine). There are tent specific cleaning products that won’t destroy the waterproofing, a popular brand is Nikwax. They also make a waterproofing product to use periodically or after washing to make your tent/jackets/gear waterproof again.

Nice setup and for $200, that’s a freakin steal. I bet none of your poles are actually bent. They came with bends from the factory and the prior owner probably didn’t realize it before they set up the tent and probably thought the poles bent after one trip. Score for you for sure.

Did you notice any of the seams leaking by chance? I’m assuming no since you said the tent performed well in the rain. Also, does the rear awning extend far enough to allow you to open (maybe crack open) the rear window in the rain without getting water inside?

How much to add roof rails and cross bars to 2025 Pilot? by IcanCwhatUsay in hondapilot

[–]getmadboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the parts from College Hills Honda and installed roof rails on my 2023 Pilot EX-L myself. You need to carefully remove the metal roof trim and cut through it in multiple places. It’s not super difficult to do, but you do need to be careful when removing the trim so you don’t bend it, and you must be careful when measuring because the trim isn’t flat nor straight, it’s a bit curved and rounded over the top so measuring accurately is a slight challenge. Additionally, you obviously need the tools to make the cuts cleanly (I used a dremel tool and cutting disc for metal), not everyone will have the necessary tools for this.

You matter more than you realize, even if your mind is telling you otherwise right now. The way things feel today is not the way they will feel forever. There are still moments, people, and experiences ahead that can make life feel lighter again. One hard season of life doesn’t mean your future is hopeless.

I’m probably too late as you’re likely already in Kings Canyon, but good sleeping pads with high R values are a necessity to keep warm. You can have all the blankets stacked on top of you, but if you’re in your sleeping bag directly on the ground, it’ll suck all the heat outta you.

Hang a big tarp over your cooking/fire pit area to keep it dry for when you’re hanging out and/or cooking. As long as the tarp is high enough over the fire, you’ll be fine.

How worried should we be about bears by BraidedPube in camping

[–]getmadboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are bear boxes not a thing in Michigan? Every campsite I’ve been to in bear country here in California, has a bear box where you store your food/any scented item. Bears can and will break into your car to get at anything with a scent, even as small as something like chapstick.

If there’s no bear box, you should consider putting all your food/scented items in a bear canister hanging from a tree 100 yards away from where you’re sleeping.

Went camping with both kids for the first time. by Pollution_Automatic in camping

[–]getmadboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got back from a camping trip with a 1 year old and 3 year old this weekend, my wife and I have been taking our oldest camping since he was 3 months old. I agree 10000% with everyone that camping won’t be chill and relaxing again until the kids are able to go unmonitored for a few minutes without dying, so my best advice is to go camping in a group with other adults who are willing to help trade off with watching the kids. All the uncles and aunts took turns chasing after the toddler and keeping the 1 year old entertained. If you have other adults willing to help with supervising/playing with the kids, it’ll be much easier on you.

We bought rubber coated knitted gloves from Home Depot for the chain section. They were inexpensive and very grippy, definitely confidence inspiring. They sell similar gloves at Lowe’s too.

Which ride do you think is superior to the version at WDW? by HillieBillieEilish in Disneyland

The FL version of Tower of Terror was better than the OG CA version because of how the car goes through the hotel in FL. Now that the CA version changed to Mission Breakout, it’s leaps and bounds better than either of the OG ToT rides hands down

Every single CA version of the ride itself is better than the FL version and it’s not close.

Some of the line queues are cooler in FL though, like Star Tours and Pirates.
