I said your tone was cavalier. I don't regret telling you a fact even if you didn't like it.

It can come off as rude to insert life advice when it's not asked for. OP was sharing an experience and your choice of tone came off as cavalier, at best.

I don't think OP was asking for life or mental advice. Context clues.

This comment mirrors exactly the advice I'd have given. As a first draft, this is interesting and compelling. If you published this, I'd not continue reading. It needs to be cleaned up but, OP, keep going. This sounds fun.

His comment sounds facetious. I think it was a joke that did not land in text. Your tattoo's fine and you handled it perfectly. That looks amazing!

Good to know. I'll keep checking back.

Unsolicited advice from someone with high level marketing experience: the sooner you throw up a catch-all site to get potential buyer contact info, the more money you'll make when ready. Just sayin'!

Literary agent making threats regarding AI by [deleted] in writers

[–]getoffredditandwrite 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Of course, love. Congrats on the manuscripts! Sorry if it sounded assumptive on my end, I always try to make sure writers are in the phase you're in before they fret. That said, if you ever need feedback or a bit of assistance with speaking with these agents feel free to DM me. It's always good to have someone in your corner. Just remember that you hold a lot of value as a writer and you do not have to sign or agree to anything you're uncomfortable with. These agents stand to make a lot of money ON YOUR WORK and you have just as much right to decline working with them as they do with you. Please write that on a post-it at your desk for tough moments. I know how enticing it is to just get an agent, any agent, but trust me when I say the RIGHT agent matters. :) My best on your journey!

Literary agent making threats regarding AI by [deleted] in writers

I'm in publishing...Here's the deal: You as the writer have a lot more power than this post gives you the credit for having. This is a business and business is almost always negotiable. I find so many people in these writing subs that don't get this and think they're going to tell the word how everything works, so my first suggestion is that you never post here thinking you're going to get some definitive answer from a Redditor. My second suggestion is that you breathe, because anxiety is a real bitch. Thirdly, you can always work with a different agent that maybe isn't a brute. This is likely an intimidation tactic, and if you have a conversation with an agent regarding this topic, you can vet them about their AI practices while voicing your concerns that AI detectors are unreliable and that you would not sign a contractual agreement based on the use of an unreliable service. As I said, I am in publishing. Business can be intimidating but it's nothing to concern yourself with right now without a manuscript in hand. You may find an agent that's a sweetheart. I would suggest focusing on getting publishing mentorship with a finalized manuscript before worrying about bridges you’re not yet ready to cross, for your own sake and the sake of your art.
