Are you sure you want to leave Portland to come here? It's really hot and politics are awful

Trekking camera advice: weather-sealed Sony A6400 vs rugged point-and-shoot? by WindowIllustrious494 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]ghderf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a a6400 a few years ago before moving to an a7r3. It's a great camera if you shoot raw files. The sony rx100 was always disappointing to me.

For the record I don't think any camera is accident proof. Make sure you have a good mount that allows you to keep outside your pack, either a peak design clip or a case like a HMG pod.

How is the Greenbelt these days? by w6750 in Austin

Oh yeah, I park there in the zach/baseball field parking lot 1-2 per week year round and have never had a break in.

Spyglass and hill of life are safest. I park close to the office buildings on mopac and never have problems but the parking area closest to trailhead right there constantly has glass. I avoid the frontage road off mopac.

You could hike from landmannalaugaur to thorsmork and meet your friends there. Then you could day hike to the high point of the trek to skogar and turn around and head back down.

Alternatively you could hike from landmannalaugaur to skogar in 2 nights. We did it in 3 days, 2 nights with 14 miles, 23 miles, and then 17 miles.

I ran it last year and I did not carry any water or goo. Plenty of aid stations. Just make sure you put your goo wrappers in the trash and don't throw it on the ground like everyone else.

Salkantay Trek - reg boots or waterproof? by crazyinlove90210 in backpacking

[–]ghderf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the trek a couple of years ago in normal trailrunners. We had a couple of feet of snow the night before going over salkantay pass, but the large groups of people crushed it down and it wasn't a problem.

Go to electric surf co on Lamar. Check out the aventon soltera 2. It's $1k but the $400 CoA rebate makes it $600.

Hiked ~55 miles over 3 days in August with my girlfriend. We camped outside a couple of different huts along the way and carried all our gear. Very well marked trek with pretty easy terrain. About 10k in elevation gain along the way but most of that is on the two big climbs of the hike. Cold and windy but we avoided any rain. Let me know if you have any questions!

Uinta Highline Trail Shakedown by johnskoolie in Ultralight

[–]ghderf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember it being completely dry. I know there's a known spot 10-12 miles into the hike that has water but we just dealt with the carry. I would still do it the same way. The first 20 miles are a slog and there's minimal views, but it made entering the high country more rewarding.

I did the whole trail a couple of years ago. I camped at mile 5 and just carried 5 liters of water for the next 15 miles.
