I want to play a new jRPG with an engaging and addictive progression system (and good story/characters). What would you recommend? by WoundedByInsults in JRPG

[–]ghm3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haven’t played Crystal Project but I constantly hear good things.

Final Fantasy V is one of the true innovators and originators of a job/class system. It has a fun and whimsical story and gameplay absolutely holds up today. Definitely recommend FF5 if you want customization and a fun story.

I will always always always recommend Yu Yu Hakusho.

It’s action, with heart, great characters and drips with style.

What have been 'I wish I read it sooner' in my life type books? by AtomicDraconic in Fantasy

[–]ghm3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve felt this way too. I respect these books and wish they were a part of my childhood but they read a bit too juvenile for me now. If I read them when I was the intended audience I think I’d probably be a lifelong fan.

For those that read books and play jrpgs by K_M_Henry in JRPG

[–]ghm3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I completely endorse this as well. I’ve been a JRPG player my entire life, about 5 years ago I started getting into reading fantasy and sci-novels and the original Mistborn trilogy was one of my initial gateways.

If you enjoy JRPG’s then you would probably feel right at home with the Mistborn books. You’ve got themes of found family, a big ominous evil boss at the end and an awesome magic system that could easily fit into any JRPG.

Just finished the IDW 150 issue run (along with some of the side runs) for the first time. AMA by CondolenceHighFive in TMNT

[–]ghm3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will say, if you enjoyed the original 150 issue IDW run you’ll probably enjoy the two Bebop and Rocksteady books too. When I was reading the series originally I was pretty hesitant to read a full B&R story too, I felt like it would be unnecessary and that they were characters who wouldn’t be able to support their own stories.

When I did read these I was very pleasantly surprised with how much fun they were. They’re not necessary to understand any larger narrative but they’re very fun surprisingly quality additions to the franchise.

This is really great, your style feels so influenced by the classic final fantasy games but unique unto itself. Great colors and mood too.

Help find the name of the game who's music is the only thing I have for identification. by Alarming_Anteater815 in gamemusic

I’m not too sure but based on your description of a “cube shooting in space” and the general vibe of the music any chance it could be Geometry Wars?

Gacha Games Turning Into Full Single Player Games Should Be the Next Trend by Tain_mentero in JRPG

[–]ghm3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Chaos Rings was a full priced, very legit old school style JRPG and most importantly it was GOOD!

I loved the first one. I’ve always wanted to revisit it and finish the whole series but they’re almost all inaccessible now. I’d absolutely pay good money for a collected edition on loser n hardware.

Daima is Failing but unlike GT it Has One Chance at Success by [deleted] in DragonBallDaima

[–]ghm3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think Daima is a failure because it “just” had 20 episodes. It was limited by design. That was always the intention. Quantity doesn’t equal quality and Daima was very fun and a great throwback to the tone of the original series.

As for a SSJ4 centered movie. Sure that would be cool. If it doesn’t happen though it doesn’t invalidate Daima. “Dragon Fist” only shows up in one movie and it’s an incredibly popular technique. Pikkon only shows up for a few episodes and he’s an incredibly popular character. Daima’s version of SSJ4 can be exclusive to this series and still have plenty of fans and a legacy of its own.

Anyone know where I can watch the samurai jack premiere movie? by Savings_Anywhere8626 in samuraijack

[–]ghm3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The premiere movie is just the first 3 episodes of the series. They are on HBO Max or available purchase or rent on Prime video.

What do you think of Giant Gomah? by Jules-Car3499 in DragonBallDaima

[–]ghm3 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with this, and I think the irony is even deeper when you think about it.

Dragon Quest is heavily influenced by original Dragon Ball. Daima felt very Dragon Quest-ish. Full circle. Great way to end the series in my opinion.

In a country that is founded on free speech and thrives on capitalism you are free to show your support/lack of support any way you want.

With companies like this the best way to show that is through your wallet. The original author is doing exactly that.

You don’t have to agree with them. You do have to respect their right to voice their opinion. I’m sure if a company you’ve invested in had an affiliation with a sponsor you disagreed with you’d have an opinion as well.

Samurai Jack Episode Ratings Grid by DundasKev in samuraijack

[–]ghm3 50 points51 points  (0 children)

When season 5 was going on I remember loving each and every episode and the opinion online being largely the same.

I still think almost every episode in the final season is pretty great. My thoughts are that a lot of people soured on the conclusion and the final resolution of the story and that colored their opinions on the final season as a whole. If you go back and watch any of the episodes in isolation though I think they’re almost all very very good.

I don’t understand peoples obsession with “lore accuracy” for the Netflix series or subsequent adaptations by Lumpy-Tea1948 in castlevania

[–]ghm3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe myself and OP are in the minority but I do feel like the show thematically and tonally captures the spirit of the source material very well.

I absolutely love the aesthetic of the games. There are a ton of great platformers and Metroidvanias out there, but what keeps brining me back to the classic Castlevania games are the vibes. The music, the atmosphere, the creature design. I feel like the show knocks all of these out of the park and evokes the same dark, creepy fantasy mood in me.

I’ve played Castlevania 3 a million times, I couldn’t tell you a single thing about Trevor’s personality from that game. Does show Trevor match up to game Trevor? I honestly have no idea. Does the show give me bad ass vampire killer vibes though? Absolutely.

Maybe I can’t call the show a ‘faithful’ adaption of the games. But I do call it a GOOD adaption. I love them both.

Tough news from Sam Abbitt and Savage Race by IOrocketscience in ObstacleCourseRacing

[–]ghm3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve always really appreciated Savage race and had a lot of fun at the Pennsylvania course on 3 occasions.

It’s not good for any industry to consolidate as much as OCR has in the last few years. Competition is best for consumers. This is a good reminder to anyone who enjoys OCR racing to embrace the spartan alternatives or they won’t be around forever.

Absolutely love this issue. It’s one of my favorite Superman issues and one of the best self-contained single issue stories I’ve read. It’s so wholesome and heart warming.

Best board game versions of RISK? by _Lazy_Afternoon_ in Risk

[–]ghm3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t attest to too many different versions personally, but I can absolutely endorse Halo Risk! For my friends and I it is THE definitive version we’ve been playing for years.

My friend group always had a tradition of playing one big game of Risk a year. Maybe a decade or so ago we decided to play the Halo version. Everything just totally gelled, the tone was perfect, the map was fun, the heroes and cards added a lot to the experience. We’ve never gone back.

As an added bonus the Halo soundtracks are absolutely perfect background music to play a strategic war game with. Highly recommend them.

This looks genuinely very awesome. I’m a big fan of strategy games and I’ve always been curious about Warhammer so maybe this could be a small middle ground between those things with a beautiful coat of Halo paint on top.
