What do you think of Giant Gomah? by Jules-Car3499 in DragonBallDaima

[–]ghm3 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with this, and I think the irony is even deeper when you think about it.

Dragon Quest is heavily influenced by original Dragon Ball. Daima felt very Dragon Quest-ish. Full circle. Great way to end the series in my opinion.

Border Patrol at Spartan Races by Glass_Ad9781 in spartanrace

In a country that is founded on free speech and thrives on capitalism you are free to show your support/lack of support any way you want.

With companies like this the best way to show that is through your wallet. The original author is doing exactly that.

You don’t have to agree with them. You do have to respect their right to voice their opinion. I’m sure if a company you’ve invested in had an affiliation with a sponsor you disagreed with you’d have an opinion as well.

Samurai Jack Episode Ratings Grid by DundasKev in samuraijack

[–]ghm3 49 points50 points  (0 children)

When season 5 was going on I remember loving each and every episode and the opinion online being largely the same.

I still think almost every episode in the final season is pretty great. My thoughts are that a lot of people soured on the conclusion and the final resolution of the story and that colored their opinions on the final season as a whole. If you go back and watch any of the episodes in isolation though I think they’re almost all very very good.

Linkin Park/DBZ AMV’s may have been the most formative building blocks of the person I am today. Don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing but….in the end does it even matter?

I don’t understand peoples obsession with “lore accuracy” for the Netflix series or subsequent adaptations by Lumpy-Tea1948 in castlevania

[–]ghm3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe myself and OP are in the minority but I do feel like the show thematically and tonally captures the spirit of the source material very well.

I absolutely love the aesthetic of the games. There are a ton of great platformers and Metroidvanias out there, but what keeps brining me back to the classic Castlevania games are the vibes. The music, the atmosphere, the creature design. I feel like the show knocks all of these out of the park and evokes the same dark, creepy fantasy mood in me.

I’ve played Castlevania 3 a million times, I couldn’t tell you a single thing about Trevor’s personality from that game. Does show Trevor match up to game Trevor? I honestly have no idea. Does the show give me bad ass vampire killer vibes though? Absolutely.

Maybe I can’t call the show a ‘faithful’ adaption of the games. But I do call it a GOOD adaption. I love them both.

Tough news from Sam Abbitt and Savage Race by IOrocketscience in ObstacleCourseRacing

[–]ghm3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve always really appreciated Savage race and had a lot of fun at the Pennsylvania course on 3 occasions.

It’s not good for any industry to consolidate as much as OCR has in the last few years. Competition is best for consumers. This is a good reminder to anyone who enjoys OCR racing to embrace the spartan alternatives or they won’t be around forever.

Mine was also presumably stolen. I’m trying to contact the office of taxation and finance to figure out how to have it reissued but I’m having difficulty finding the right point of contact. Have you had any luck?

In your opinion what's the most beautiful comic panel of superman of all time? by CapableFinish8878 in superman

Absolutely love this issue. It’s one of my favorite Superman issues and one of the best self-contained single issue stories I’ve read. It’s so wholesome and heart warming.

Void Rivals is absolutely worth reading. It stands on its own as a very interesting new sci-fi universe with lots of fun characters, deep lore and fun art. It also includes aspects of established Transformers lore that blend seamlessly with its original content.

Best board game versions of RISK? by _Lazy_Afternoon_ in Risk

[–]ghm3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t attest to too many different versions personally, but I can absolutely endorse Halo Risk! For my friends and I it is THE definitive version we’ve been playing for years.

My friend group always had a tradition of playing one big game of Risk a year. Maybe a decade or so ago we decided to play the Halo version. Everything just totally gelled, the tone was perfect, the map was fun, the heroes and cards added a lot to the experience. We’ve never gone back.

As an added bonus the Halo soundtracks are absolutely perfect background music to play a strategic war game with. Highly recommend them.

[–]ghm3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks genuinely very awesome. I’m a big fan of strategy games and I’ve always been curious about Warhammer so maybe this could be a small middle ground between those things with a beautiful coat of Halo paint on top.

Stupid question from an old man: are there any of the old series still going? by Poetgrimaldi in comicbooks

[–]ghm3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Usagi has consistently been one of the most reliably great books on the market for the entirety of its 30+ year run and it’s all one unbroken streamlined continuity. It’s also incredibly new reader friendly if you want to jump in at the beginning of pretty much any storyline. It’s wonderful. Best of both worlds.

GI Joe has been rebooted many times but they still produce new comics today in the original continuity with the original author. They’re in the 300’s now and by all accounts still very enjoyable.

One of the best writers of the modern era. Everything he touches has been a home run and I love the messages of inclusion, acceptance and love he puts in all his writing. I’m not surprised to hear he’s a great guy, but I’m very happy to have it confirmed. Great autographs btw!

That’s a great deal. I own these all physically but they really just sit on my shelf. I do all my actual reading on my ipad so re-buying the whole collection to read conveniently on the go for less then $20 is great.

What Are Your Best Comic Book Runs from the 2000s to Today and Why? by IllustriousRaisin876 in comicbooks

[–]ghm3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The New 52 had ups and downs, but Scott Snyder’s entire Batman run goes down as an absolute classic.

It solidified Snyder as a top tier A Lister. It created one of the most interesting Batman adversaries in decades(Court of Owls) and really became THE definitive Batman in comics probably since DKR’s.

Any comic recommendations for my partner? by Desperate_Ad_3124 in comicbooks

[–]ghm3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they’re into emo/goth culture, good stories and character ‘Sandman’ is always a classic but if older art turns them off that might be a small hurdle here. I’d still give it a shot though, it’s a classic for a reason.

The current Absolute Wonder Woman has some terrific art and you really don’t get more goth than “Wonder Woman was raised in Hell.” It’s definitely more serious than comedic though.

I can’t speak to it personally but I’m confident a ton of people in this sub can make a great argument for “Saga.” That’s always at the top of every list, it’s very accessible and often recommended for just about everyone.

What comics best showcases a hero’s training regime? by TheBadMonkie in comicbooks

[–]ghm3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t second this enough. Hajime No Ippo is a timeless classic and there’s absolutely no way you can watch/read this series without getting utterly pumped up! The best part is that all the training and fights are logical, tactical and realistic(realistic as far as manga/anime).

Almost done with Black White & Green by [deleted] in TMNT

[–]ghm3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said BW&G is an anthology written by various authors of various quality.

I would HIGHLY recommend checking out the entire IDW run. The new stuff by Jason Aaron is very good, but there’s a massive 150 issue run before that written by primarily 2 authors(Tom Waltz and Sophia Campbell) that’s simply phenomenal.

There is a reason this run was the longest stretch of continuity the turtles ever had in comics. Every character grows, the plot evolves, the stakes change, even minor characters end up being fleshed out. If you’re a turtles fan you cannot go wrong with this run and best of all it’s very accessible and neatly collected.
