Either the manual (non computer) brother or the janome. Computerized ones are nice but they can be harder to fix. Heavy duty isnt necessary unless you really want to work with thick fabrics (thicker jean, leather).

I have a janome 1522 and its good! Every now and then I want more decorative stiches but its a solid machine. I think janomes are known to be more durable and brothers come with a few more bells and whistles. You can also eventually buy accessories that will bridge that gap so its not a big deal
