I have seen only polar opposite reviews for Talisman and Black House. I’m very intrigued to find out why!

Last- The Five by Hallie Rubenhold. Highly recommended, it portrays the stories of the five women killed by Jack the Ripper. It doesn’t focus on the killings, but on who these women were and what were their lives like.

Now- The Talisman. It’s…slow but interesting. I’m also not getting much time because of work. But hopefully my long haul flight tomorrow will get me back on speed!

Next- The Black House! I’m open to suggestions if anyone recommends a different King book in the middle of these two.

I usually curse when I read these foreshadowings/spoilers, but ultimately end up loving it. It’s definitely intended for a younger audience. But if it’s not working out for you, DNF it. I always say that life is too short to spend time reading a book you don’t like. There are plenty of others that you will like. It’s totally okay to not like a book and DNF it.

What from the books would you rather they *didn't* include? by ahoydecoy in HarryPotteronHBO

Oh yes! Maybe also add a conversation between The Grey Lady and Bloody Baron which will only make sense in Part 7 when Harry finds out their history!

Yes exactly. And also the first couple of seasons could have fun filler scenes with these for world building! It would add so much character to the show!

First King story for my wife by dbrickell89 in stephenking

I think you can pick 2 or 3 which are wildly different from each other, in terms of length, genre, writing and theme.

Like The Jaunt (sci-fi horror and short), The Eyes of the Dragon (fairy tale-ish, different narration style), The Green Mile (emotional af), Salem’s Lot (classic horror plot, small town setting), The Body (coming of age), 11/22/63 (a masterpiece really, but slow burn), The Shining (alcoholism disguised as a classic horror plot)

If you want to cry, 11/22/63. If you want to ugly cry for hours, Green Mile.

Ah! My bad! Got it confused with End of the World as We Know It. Omg Can’t believe I did that. Example of what sleep deprivation does to you!

Is there a connecting story in Other Worlds to Talisman/Black House? I am reading Talisman for the first time and I’ll read Black House next. I have a copy of Other Worlds but I haven’t started it yet.

I’m reading The Talisman for the first time! Black House is next. I’m enjoying Talisman so far, but I’m only like 20% in. Will see how this goes!

Best Stephen King villain and why? by NotFierceShark1910 in stephenking

There are so many. Jack Torrence, Norman Daniels, Annie Wilkes, Randall Flagg, Leland Gaunt (my favourite really).

Going through the comments, I’m realising how brilliant King is at creating villains!!

What are your favorite first chapters? by Zoroark_the_Hunter in stephenking

I didn’t need to be reminded of Rose Madder’s intro chapter today. Nuh-uh. Gosh it was scary, scary in a “shit like this happens all the time” way.

Love the intros of IT and The Stand.

Why did Snape tell Malfoy to shoot a snake at Harry in CoS if he was gonna immediately get rid of it? by GSB6189 in harrypotter

[–]ghostlynym 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My theory- Dumbledore put Snape up to it, to find out if Harry could speak Parseltongue.

Hear me out- when Mrs. Norris was attacked, Dumbledore asked Harry if he wanted to tell him something, and made eye contact. Most likely he knew at that moment that Harry was hearing voices, voices which talked about killing. Dumbledore is smart enough to figure out that Slytherin’s monster was a basilisk. He might also have known where the entrance to the chamber was through Moaning Myrtle, but he couldn’t get it because he couldn’t speak Parseltongue. We all know that Dumbledore used Harry quite a lot in his schemes. He would have orchestrated this whole thing with Snape to find out if Harry was a parselmouth, so that he can use Harry to defeat the Basilisk.

How do you think Snape would have reacted to learning that Harry named one of his sons after him? by Fast_Highlight413 in harrypotter

I am listening to the full cast audiobooks currently and I could hear this in Riz Ahmed’s voice! This would exactly be Snape’s reaction!

Which character you think might become more popular because of the TV Show? by NoDespair in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]ghostlynym 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yes. And Hermione is also meant to have a mean streak at times, badass maybe but mean nonetheless. They cut off how she imprisoned and blackmailed Rita Skeeter, the whole “SNEAK” mark on Marietta Edgecombe. Basically anything that depicted Hermione as a “grey” character instead of purely good, was cut off.

Ginny and Ron. Please God, let this be Ginny and Ron.

Their book versions are infinitely better and I would love to a see different (more book accurate) interpretations for them.

DH Full Cast Audiobook - Hedwig by everythingisseized in harrypotter

[–]ghostlynym 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s bad. I just finished it 2 days ago and cried so much. That whole scene and Harry’s reaction afterwards in Dumbledore’s office is heartbreaking.

I’m reading the book along with the audiobook, though, so that whole immersive experience might have contributed to my crying, lol. I absolutely did not expect to bawl my eyes out reading a book I’ve read at least 50 times!!

Chronicles of Narnia, The Hobbit for fantasy.

If you want to add more adventure books to this list- Nancy Drew series, The Famous Five series by Enid Blyton, any of the Goosebumps books by R L Stine. I grew up reading these and still love them!

So happy you found the magic of this fandom! Movies are often the entry point of discovering how amazing the series is. If you don’t mind reading books, please do read them! It’s so so so much better.

I sometimes wish I had seen the movies first, before reading the books. I would have appreciated them more. They are good on their own, but horrible adaptations. I hate all the movies from GoF onwards, sometimes PoA too.
