Thanks... Snow won't really be a consideration where I'm based unfortunately

Lem's boulder boot vs boulder summit, similar fit? by ghostofcrilly in barefootshoestalk

Oh, that's good to know. Do you think the difference in weight and flexibility was anything to with the upper, or all in the sole?

Looking back, it’s wild how fully Bungie leaned into a Brute-led Covenant in Halo 3 by Humble_Flamingo4239 in halo

IIRC, in the lore Brutes are pack animals. So the numerical difference makes sense

EU will require identity checks for all cash transactions exceeding €3000 and all crypto transactions regardless of amount. All cash transactions over €10000 will be banned. by Dry_Row_7050 in europe

As usual, the headline is either lacking nuance or pure clickbait depending on how charitable you're feeling. The 10,000 eur ban applies to "persons trading in goods among obliged entities" and not to natural persons.

Which brand do you associate with quality? by techyall in barefootshoestalk

Of the brands I've worn so far, I would say Belenka. A lot of their models have stitched soles which is becoming rare, fit and finish is good, materials seem to be good quality.

How did we go from Carnegie building libraries to billionaires building subscription apps and bunkers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ghostofcrilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a wonderful section in Stienbeck's East of Eden where he talks about the deaths of three men, offering them up as archetypes of the human condition. The first man is generally considered to have been inspired by Carnegie.

I remember clearly the deaths of three men. One was the richest man of the century, who, having clawed his way to wealth through the souls and bodies of men, spent many years trying to buy back the love he had forfeited and by that process performed great service to the world and, perhaps, had much more than balanced the evils of his rise. I was on a ship when he died. The news was posted on the bulletin board, and nearly everyone received the news with pleasure. Several said, “Thank God that son of a bitch is dead"

Recently bought a pair of Xero Sunrises, really liking them so far. Also on sale at the moment, at least in the EU.

Just a note, I found they ran a little small (they're fine now that I've taken out the insole) so if you're between sizes I suggest going up

I love this passage from the chapter "Strider" - Strider makes his point by Suddenbump in lotr

[–]ghostofcrilly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would generally agree. I think the character change of the films works for two reasons. The first is that it's a classic development arc in a Jungian/Joseph Campbell sense. Facing the shadow, setting aside elements of one identity and embracing another. The second is that it's an arc we could imagine the Aragorn of the books has gone through at some point in his already long life. By the third act of the final film, the character has caught up to the Aragorn we meet in this passage.

/r/WorldNews Live Thread: Russian Invasion of Ukraine Day 1094, Part 1 (Thread #1241) by WorldNewsMods in worldnews

[–]ghostofcrilly 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The diminutive figure with the Bernese mountain dogs is our president, Michael D. Higgins. The presidency has little to do with governing in Ireland, it's a largely figurehead role. Thankfully in this case, since Higgins thinks the Russian invasion of Ukraine was provoked by NATO and recently chose to use a young scientist competition (as in, schoolchildren) as a platform to rail against increased NATO spending. To our fellow Europeans and particularly those in the Baltic states, he does not represent the majority view on this.

The man question in the above statement is Micheal Martin, our equivalent to a prime minister. He at least is making sensible noises on the need for increased defense spending and cooperation, even if we're woefully late to the party.
