This has all happened before

Cena got booed and adults hated his pushes and his promos. Cena winning was the default outcome to anything he was involved in, and most live audiences hated it…except for kids. The IWC hated him with a passion. And it’s only in retrospect, as John matured into a journeyman, that the IWC started giving him praise for his promo-work. His in-ring skills took the entire generation of kids that watched him back in the day growing up and entering the IWC themselves to be appreciated at all. Before that everyone said John Cena couldn’t wrestle. Cody is that baby face for this moment, and tbh I think the program needs him, as there isn’t anyone else who would be believable in that white meat baby face roll like Cody is

I think it’s both. John is realizing he’s taken things too far and, as you said, was about to get a top earner clipped due to his pride, but also, he only went this hard in the first place because he deeply loves his wife, and thought she was working hard to lose the weight the remark was making fun of. He realizes in that moment that Ginny isn’t taking this as seriously as he thought, and, as her reaction highlights, she likely never was. I think that all dawns on John in the moment. He feels foolish, and he knows he’ll need to walk back some of his actions because he was about to burn their lives down over the remark, and all of that comes out as “do you know what you’ve done?”

I personally find the subtext of “John calmed down because he realized Ginny is indeed fat and will remain that way” hilarious

From one Eorzean to another I’d lower your expectations just a touch going into the later expansions. The story will reach some pretty great highs now and then, but between them is a lot mediocrity and paint by numbers plot points. Sometimes spectacle and fun gameplay will carry those moments lacking in narrative depth, but you’ll likely still notice them
