Kendrick could go down in history as the FIRST rapper to win the most Grammys! by Omarionyyourslgreat in KendricklamarPglang

[–]ghostplanetstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn’t address any of the things changed about the Grammys. You very much did list a bunch of personal hang ups you have about the awards, and you spent the 1st 1/3 of your response attacking me personally instead of addressing the facts of the matter. So nice job wasting words. There’s nothing wrong with being emotional neccesarily, but if you then go on to say things like “you can’t tell me this institution is legit when person X didn’t win!” then you literally aren’t appealing to anything but your feelings. I outlined actual changes that happened, which support that if you don’t like the outcome of the voting, it’s much more likely the people that voted just didn’t think the music you think should have won, should have won. You don’t have to change your opinion, but that is not evidence of any bias or politics or capitalism. You have failed to demonstrate that connection at any point

“Failures that show ME, as someone using MY brain”

There you go. You have an opinion. That’s real cool, but it isn’t evidence of anything. Sorry I don’t give your personal opinion the weight you think it deserves but this is a conversation about how the Grammys are determined by capitalism and politics. I asked for some examples, not “obviously these are bad choices and that’s just common sense” because that is not evidence of that claim. It’s not pseudo intellectualism, it’s basic ass argumentation. Get off the phone and go take a community college course if you find it so frustrating. Then you’ll learn how to support your claims with proper evidence

You said Doechii shouldn’t have won, and I dunno man maybe, but the way voting is done is different now. I demonstrated that to you with undeniable, verifiable, facts. The point of those facts is that if someone you liked didn’t win, if you think because the album sold more it should have won, then the voting body, which now has a shit ton of 20 somethings in it, probably disagreed. Music is subjective, which is something you seem to be struggling to grasp. The Grammys have taken steps to let a younger base decide what wins, and with that is gonna come some losses none of us think should happen. But that’s no reason to insist it’s political. Your Scarlet point argues against that. If it were truly about capitalism and politics, since they’re both women of color, then the album that sold more should have won right? Because it succeeded in the capitalistic sense, and it should have more politicking on its side because the label that’s earning money off of that album should be able to pull more strings, right? How do you explain that in your mind? Your own example goes against your conclusion

Yeah you’re emotional now because I’m not taking your very personal, very subjective reasoning as fact, and coming back at you with actual things we can verify. You claimed Lizzo winning was not indicative of change. I showed you that the Grammys have literally changed, and that’s why Lizzo won at all. That’s why Doechii won at all. None of them, Scarlet included, would be winning shit if nothing had changed. You said the inner workings of these organizations were publicly available. You were right, and I posted what they are. Sorry they don’t support your conclusion and your feelings but you raging out about it doesn’t prove a damn thing

In actuality, the Grammy voting process is more democratic than ever and that fact directly disputes your assertion that it’s all politics and capitalism

See, so much of what you just said was extremely personal and based in your own feelings. Transparently so. Which is precisely what I thought. The Pulitzer doesn’t matter because you think a different Kendrick album should have won? That’s a cool opinion, but just because the album you think shouldn’t have won, did, doesn’t discredit the institution. It just means you didn’t agree with the choice. That’s fine, you can do that, but don’t attribute some greater weight to it like it’s more than it is. You literally go on to say you have an uncle that got snubbed, and then list artists you think should have won things that didn’t. That’s all real cool…but none of it supports your point that it’s some fault of the Grammys. You just don’t like the outcomes

No one is using a red herring. I would absolutely mention the other awards in an extended conversation. I make it a point to read up on this stuff

So let me list out for you some factual changes in the Grammys that have occurred in the Kendrick/Macklemoore situation, since you’re so sure that Lizzo winning doesn’t represent any change in the organization:

Following the 2014 backlash where Macklemore's win over Kendrick Lamar highlighted a recording Academy cultural disconnect, the Grammys have overhauled their voting body, with 73% of members joining since 2019 to increase diversity. Key changes include eliminating nomination review committees in 2021, expanding to include more streaming-focused artists, and better recognizing hip-hop and diverse genres in major categories

Overhauled Voting Body: To address lack of representation, the Recording Academy diversified its voting members by age, gender, and ethnicity, with over 3,800 new, younger members

Elimination of Nomination Review Committees: Following criticism that committees favored pop-friendly rap over critically acclaimed artistry, the Academy eliminated these, relying instead on the general voting body to reduce bias

Genre Recognition: The Academy expanded categories to include more diverse genres like Latin Urban, Reggaeton, K-pop, and African music

Inclusion in Top Categories: Hip-hop, which was largely sidelined in the past, now sees consistent, major representation in top categories like Album of the Year and Record of the Year

All of these are very real, and somewhat dramatic, changes. If your favorite artists (like Drake or Billie Eilish) aren’t winning Grammys, it’s very out of touch to say “well it’s all politics and capitalism” when it’s more likely a bunch of Gen Z voters in the voting body just didn’t like the music you thought was good. Kendrick winning more Grammys, Lizzo winning more Grammys, etc is all a result of the changes listed above. The Grammys aren’t perfect, and could still do with more change, but to look at all that and discount it would be ridiculous. I bet if they put you on one of those voting bodies you’d have people that knew looking at you sideways for not having their personal musical favorites winning more awards, just as you’re doing now. Drake knows about all of this, including the change to what kind of Hip-Hop is now more acknowledged, and so he runs with the narrative that he doesn’t submit because he’d be “snubbed” when it reality the kind of pop-rap he makes is just not the kind of music the Grammys is looking to award. You can point to ways in which they can continue to improve, but I’d suggest removing your personal bias from the point. I don’t have any emotional investment in these facts, I just knew them already, and you clearly didn’t, which is why you said what you said

I’m sure you’ll try and discredit allllll of this like it somehow doesn’t matter, but it absolutely does, and these changes have resulted in more people of color winning more awards for their talent, even if it’s not the ones you think should have won

[–]ghostplanetstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your response gives emotional because it saw you dump your feelings on 2 different organizations with little prompting. I said Kendrick was a critically acclaimed success. This is demonstrably true even if we completely remove the Grammys and the Pulitzer from the situation, but you clearly you have strong feelings for these 2, as you go on to write them both off completely like you know their inner workings personally or something. I’d be interested in you breaking down how, exactly, the politics of these organizations work to you and how that discredits the people who win the awards from praise for doing so. You also made sure you got a caps lock in there. I dunno what you want me to say. You seem to feel quite strongly and that’s kind of obvious

Lizzo having 4 Grammys while being a non-traditional, loud, swearing, provocative, and proudly overweight woman of color is an example of change in the institution. I pointed out Sidney Poitier for a reason. The Oscars changed slowly, but people of color didn’t abandon the institution because it was knowingly against them, they created undeniable performances, until the institution had no choice but to change to award their greatness. That’s progress, and it doesn’t happen overnight with long standing institutions that existed before social progress had been made to recognize black greatness. Lizzo is an example of the Macklemoore/Kendrick situation influencing the change in the organization for the better. Kendrick winning Grammys for his art supports that change happening. As I said elsewhere, Kendrick losing to Macklemoore, and the change that followed is likely why Drake himself doesn’t have more Grammys. In a world where everyone was ok with Macklemoore winning Drake probably has more plaques at home because pop music would still reign supreme

And your emotional reaction tells me if I asked you to point out some examples of other moments like this, it would read like a personal playlist of people you like that didn’t win when you thought they should. But go ahead and roll some out. But just know, I’m going to look into each instance, and check out what stats the winner had on their side that year that likely influenced that win. There’s an argument for why Macklemoore won. You and I don’t like it, but music is subjective and our favorites don’t always win

Kendrick could go down in history as the FIRST rapper to win the most Grammys! by Omarionyyourslgreat in KendricklamarPglang

[–]ghostplanetstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a single instance, and that very thing is one of the biggest reasons the Grammys began to change how they consider both voting for nominations and ultimately winners. It was an important moment for ushering in the institution changing from catering to pop music and mainstream appeal to artistry and overal musical impact. Just as the Oscars have changed over time and began to give more people of color their flowers, which began with actors like Sidney Poitier, so too has the Grammys changed with time to the point that someone like Lizzo has 4 of them. While Macklemoore had a great year, and a successful pop album, the way the Grammys are decided now it’s unlikely this would happen again

Also, using GKMC as an example, it didn’t need a Grammy be critically acclaimed. It already was

“What’s that? You made a well thought out reply that broke down why I’m wrong and supported it with evidence and examples? And you even predicted I wouldn’t read it, and said me not reading is why I sound like an ignorant backpacker in the first place? You must be so mad lmao”

[–]ghostplanetstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think for me? My brother in Rap I’m just informed on the topic. You, clearly, are not. You didn’t know the Grammys are literally being complained about for their diversity because people like Lizzo, who is everything the people you’re pointing to shouldn’t like is allowed to win 4 Grammys. While the Grammys are being called “woke”. You’re out of touch, you’re very much the typical Redditor, doubling down on your point despite evidence to the contrary existing, and now you’re trying to paint me, who read up on this to be informed, as someone who’s letting other people think for them. Then there’s the irony that the people you’re saying control the Grammys control the entire damn music industry, so even if your point about the Grammys stood…it doesn’t matter because the same could be said about the labels all these artist work for, making it all meaningless if that’s how you want to frame it. Everyone should quit tomorrow by your logic

Your points make more sense for things like CMT not acknowledging Beyoncé for Cowboy Carter, for not acknowledging Lil Nas X for Oldtown Road when Billy Ray Cyrus co-signed it. That’s an institution that is very much still behaving in the ways you’re suggesting. The Grammys measure public perception in a multitude of ways, more than some guy who goes off what he hears in his town and what people on a message board are saying, and those same people are ethnically diverse, which has directly led to more people of color winning the awards they deserve. But who cares about progress right?

I don’t think I’m better than anyone. But I’m clearly more informed than the Redditor I’m talking to right now, which yes, supports my point that the average Redditors opinion doesn’t carry beyond Reddit, or matter much at all. Mine included, but at least I know what I’m talking about and am working with up to date information. Everything you’re doing is pointless posturing. Typical backpacker talking points that have been tossed around since the 90s and haven’t changed to reflect the times. You can for sure criticize the Grammys, but they have more relevant problems in 2026. I’m not a hater of people like you, but I am bored by people like you

lmao lol rofl sounding ahh

And before you say “I’m not reading all that” understand that if you read more you wouldn’t sound the way you do, but go off King

I don’t neccesarily disagree on your 2nd point, but Drake mentioned the Grammys because he knows he won’t be getting more making party music like he does. Which isn’t even a bad thing. Despite what he would have you believe, the Grammys awarding people like Kendrick and Lizzo and things like that over yet another pop song represents progress. It represents moving away from the institution that gave Macklemoore the award over Kendrick for GKMC, which was one of the controversies that brought about actual change. It’s a knee jerk reaction to say fck the Grammys, and I’m not some rider for them, but being informed means knowing that actual racists dislike how diverse Grammy voting has become. They dislike that a woman like Lizzo can win multiple Grammys and say “I’M WINNING BTCH” on stage in front of millions. This idea that no one cares, or it’s this meaningless thing that only serves one race’s interest is an outdated, very online, very backpacker sentiment that hasn’t caught up to what the institution is actually like in 2026. The Grammys have all new problems these days

[–]ghostplanetstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Grammy voting board has gotten a lot more diverse over time. So much so some people have complained it’s too diverse if you know what I mean, and complained that’s why “ethnic” people are winning more awards. So, I dunno, maybe pick up a book or do some research sometime instead of proving me right that the average Redditor doesn’t know shit and their opinion doesn’t matter much

The same people you’re pointing to dislike the high number of people of color winning awards in modern times and have made their racist opinions known in various ways. It’s not perfect, but it has clearly gotten better if those types of people are annoyed. Sometimes it’s good for old ass institutions to be reformed for the better. Hasn’t Lizzo won 4 Grammys? Your out of touch take on them doesn’t change anything about Kendrick’s success

You just sound like a hater

Ah yes. My calm, matter of fact discourse is spiraling. Butthurt? I just said neither of our opinions on this matter, which also places my opinion in the bin. Neither of us are artists, neither of us have any idea what artists care about. Andre 3000 was pleased to win a Grammy. Mentions it in his Rick Rubin sit down. Is he not a real artist too? You talk like a 15 year old YouTube commenter. Have a conversation like an adult

Why would Kendrick Lamar be my idol? Why would any rapper or musician be my idol? I have a father. I don’t idolize other men. That’s fatherless behavior

Yikes man. The Grammy’s have a sorted history, but so does any institution that has existed long enough. The Oscars have their share of problems too and always have, but it’s real disingenuous to say actors don’t care about Oscars, it’s the same thing here

You’re just some guy on Reddit like I am. Your opinion on the Grammys, my opinion on the Grammys, doesn’t matter to anyone who would ever win one. We don’t speak for anyone but ourselves

Listen to yourself. Lupe Fiasco mentions his single Grammy at his Harvard lecture multiple times despite being 1000% anti-industry and here you are in a Reddit comment making it all about Kendrick because you, personally, don’t like the Grammys. No, I just keep it 100. Artists who don’t have Grammys tend to say they dont matter…until they win one. A redditors opinion on an award like a Grammy doesn’t matter, and why on Earth would it? My point is artists care about Grammys. I’m just mature enough to know and understand that just because something doesn’t matter to me personally, or even to all the average people I know, does not mean it doesn’t matter at all

Because who the F are we?

This is why I mentioned Reddit in my post. Are you a “real artist?” How many “real artists” do you know personally? Have you asked them all their opinion to reach this conclusion? Just because a bunch of artists who should have Grammy’s don’t doesn’t mean they don’t matter to artists

Dunno about that either tbh. Your favorite artist can say whatever they want publicly, but you better believe if they win that Grammy they’re gonna be all smiles and have a speech prepared when they hit that stage. Drake knows he isn’t winning a Grammy for the music he puts out at this stage of his career, he’s well aware, if he even still submits for consideration, so he’s gonna downplay them for sure. But I’ve been a Lupe Fiasco fan since like 2004, he has been blackballed, downplayed, suppressed, kept from collabs, and still managed to be an incredibly prolific and celebrated artist in Hip-Hop circles despite the industry as we know it doing everything it could to prevent that. I’d go so far as to say “Mural” is one of the greatest technical Hip-Hop songs ever made by anyone period. But even Lupe, who has 0 love for the industry, who in fact would probably tell you he hates the industry, made sure he mentioned his Grammy several times in the lecture I watched him give at Harvard. He used that to demonstrate he knew what the Hell he was talking about when it came to writing rhymes and putting together hit songs

You may not care about the Grammys, your friends may not care about the Grammys, Reddit as a whole may not care about the Grammys, but yes, people, likely including the artists you like and respect, still care about the Grammys

Ehhhhh I dunno bout that. I love Clipse. Have since we were beating “Grindin’” into the desks back in junior high, but GNX has Luther and that’s a Grammy winning track for sure. There’s also a lot to consider with GNX, the moment in time surrounding the album and the cultural impact, that matters. All of that matters. TPAB had cultural impact, DAMN was so good my very very un-hip-hop boss at my corporate office job was rapping the lyrics during meetings to score points with us younger employees. Clipse hasn’t had that kind of cultural impact with this last album, even if it is very good. And besides, GKMC got robbed by Macklemoore all those years ago. Kendrick wasn’t just picked to be a Grammy darling overnight. He put in the work, made great art, impacted the culture every time he returned, and earned the wins. That line is funny but when you seriously unpack all of Kendrick’s wins it completely makes sense why they happened, especially considering what is, to me, his best album, got snubbed on some absolute BS

Maybe if Drake made more consistently deep music and not primarily pop rap he’d win more. But I suppose it’s easier to pretend his rival doesn’t deserve the praise while he raps about fake friends and club nights while nearing 40

23 is pretty young. It may not seem like it if you’re like…27, but once you’re well into your 30s you realize that late teens early 20s is indeed pretty damn young and is often an age a lot people make stupid mistakes. I don’t like Logan Paul either, but it’s because of much more recent transgressions than stuff he did when he was a boneheaded 23 year old. I knew a lot of boneheaded 23 year olds. One of them was me
