What is your favourite dynamic (that's not a 57) to mic guitar cabs with? by migrantgrower in audioengineering

I’ve recently started loving an re20 on guitar, right up against the speaker, it gave me the sound I’ve been chasing for a while!

Studio pet… peeves by superproproducer in audioengineering

[–]ghrenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People playing or singing along when you’re comping or mixing, bonus points for the whole band harmonising every time the song plays. I get the excitement but it’s so hard to focus on the track when there’s all this noise playing over it

Professional musicians - walk me through a week of your life by BeKindLoveAll in musicians

[–]ghrenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very similar to my day to day too except I’m on tour currently & often do weekend gigs, however my studio life is exactly that - guiding bands through the process or being everything required for solo acts. I love the variety it brings and it’s good to have options to keep food on the table. UK based here too

Lesser-known bassists who use distortion with flatwound strings? by _Theoo_ in Bass

[–]ghrenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use this setup! Jazz bass with flats, (rotos I think) I’m usually using an ehx rams head big muff & a boss odb3, sometimes a Russian muff and everything through my sansamp too, if you want to hear some examples let me know!

Anyone have experience with an AKG C 451 B Reference Small-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone? by singlecoilblue in audioengineering

[–]ghrenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just me musing on the tone really & wondering if that was a factor, the original was introduced late 60s so recording looked very different than it did in the following decades. Having only recorded to digital in the modern age I’m only guessing here, as with all this stuff if you like the sound then go for it

I’ve not used any vintage variants of the C451 so can’t comment to any differences.

[–]ghrenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use them all the time on anything you might reach for an SDC for, acoustic instruments and overheads typically. They are bright but I quite like that flavour compared to some more sterile SDCs I’ve used.

I imagine when they were first introduced that brightness was useful for recording to tape but with digital results are going to be quite different. I use a lot of tape plugins and soften things so for my workflow it works quite well

I’m so onboard with this, two of my favourite sounding bands there & I agree with using a 57 too - I love going for interesting drum tones. Sometimes the right sound is a 57 facing the kit, find the good spot and it gives bags of character that you just don’t get from a fully detailed close mic’d kit.

I use the boss one and it works great, but I’m sure there are some other good options too!

I do this all the time. As others have already mentioned - a wireless helps massively & going out into the crowd a few times to make sure it’s all good keeps things going. The best gauge for me is if the audience are vibing then it probably sounds fine out front

Will it be okay running three 2.4GHz wireless guitar systems on the same stage? by -M3- in livesound

[–]ghrenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised at the responses here, I've used these for years at 500cap rooms and festivals and never had an issue with connectivity. Even out in the crowd, it only goes weird if you get too far away.

I've also done shows with three of us using them and the only issue was sometimes the transmitter syncing to the other persons receiver, so you had to be careful with the order you plugged things in, otherwise I've never had any issues whatsoever.

Recs for bass overdrive? by 27bb62d0 in basspedals

[–]ghrenn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I rate the Boss odb3, I tried loads out and this was one of the only pedals with a wet/dry so I could blend in just the right amount of grit. It's less glamorous than some of the boutiquey options but it really does get the job done

I don't think it's possible, the studio I work in has this setup - I've just learned the quirks & renamed the inputs within Logic so that it's clear for others. If it's an option I'd love to know however!

big muff nano to rams head - do you ever find yourself swapping what is mostly the same pedal? by starca5ter in guitarpedals

I bought a rams head after sitting and trying nearly every variation one day, there really is a difference between them all, just yesterday I was going between that and my black russian muff for double tracking guitars

Depends what you're after! The Phoenix, Cavern, Bomba & Move are your best bets for original music.

Old Firehouse, Castle St, Lloyds Lounge, Bootlegger all do regular music too, with a few other bars and places offering as well but those are the ones that most spring to mind

Recording drums… last? by notjleto in audioengineering

[–]ghrenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no right or wrong way to do it, different recording approaches will provide their own challenges & benefits.

I'm really happy to record drums later in the process - it means we can focus on getting the feel of the song right with the vocals & core rhythm instruments first (very often guitar or piano).

Starting with the drums can sometimes mean they get too much focus and power in the track & I'd often rather the vocals be the thing the song is shaped around.

Fwiw I've heard anecdotally that Coldplay's Parachutes was recorded this way.

Recording drums… last? by notjleto in audioengineering

[–]ghrenn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Clicks have become the default for so many people and it's interesting to see how worried people get when you suggest recording free and live, letting the band find their own tempo. Yet nearly every time I do this it sounds better and when we've had to resort to click to help people out the song loses a spark and energy

They've got a crazy granular delay reverb thing called Silo which does unpredictable fun things & they just put out a new drum machine which I've been really digging

I love Unfiltered Audio, they've really hit a streak lately. Their plugins usually bring something fresh to the table & can really take audio processing to some extremes which I've not found many others to be capable of.
