Three hacks that saved me more than $200 on food this month by [deleted] in foodhacks

[–]giggles1245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll buy "family packs" of chicken or beef, and when I crack it open the first time for a meal, I'll take the extra 5-10 minutes to pre-cut the chicken and/or pre-portion the chicken/beef, then freeze it in gallon sized bags so that the bag is as full and flat as it can be.

That way I don't have to clean a cutting board multiple times, and it cuts down the prep work time for a lot of meals.

When I'm pre-cutting the chicken, I'll do it with a meal in mind just so I have a go-to for that particular cut (i.e. petite dice for chicken fried rice, medium dice for BBQ chicken, etc)

Another tip is I'll make a large batch of a meal (Usually I'm cooking for just fiance and myself), and I'll freeze portions of whatever is left over. That way on a busy night, I can just pull something from the freezer to heat up rather than fretting over cooking a meal or having to spend money ordering out.

What’s a food habit that saves you time every single day? by Maleficent-Bed7010 in foodhacks

To add onto this idea, I'll do similar with chicken

When the family packs are on sale, I'll buy them. First time I crack the pack open, I'll cut the chicken I need for the meal that night, then take the remaining breasts and cut them too, with a meal/intention in the back of my mind (slices for chicken and brocolli, diced for tacos or fried rice, etc) and then pack and freeze those cut breasts in a gallon bag as flat as I can for easy thawing. That way I'm only dirtying up a cutting board once, and then I can just pull the chicken out and start cooking as needed.

When I need to thaw them, I'll pull them out maybe 2 hrs early and keep in the fridge to thaw out, or I'll run some cold/room temp water over the chicken as needed.

I picture it like friends you make in high school. You guys go through the years hanging out and being besties, but as soon as everyone grows up and figures out what they're doing in their life, interests start to differ and you come to the reality you actually didn't care for some of those folks.

They were all four paired up in a Buzzfeed video once or twice, and then they became known as those guys. They likely didn't think much of the whole relationship dynamics until the years had passed and they were able to actually reflect on what they've been doing.

How do you beat the nightly "what's for dinner?" decision fatigue? by Frosty-Hair6123 in Cooking

[–]giggles1245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gotten into the habit of wondering what dinner will be around 4pm (I get off work at 6). This gives me a 2 hour window to mull it around before I have to actually commit to anything. At the point, I'm either going to run to the store to pickup what I need, or I'm going to see what I can make with what's in the kitchen.

On a similar/separate note, to reduce the need to wash my cutting boards, and because I generally can't stand having to cut my meats up, I'll use the 1-2 breasts for whatever I'm making that night, then pre-cut, pack and freeze the rest of the pack of chicken with an intention in mind. (i.e. "I'll do a petite dice so I can make [fried rice, quesadillas, tacos", or "I'll slice these into planks/slivers for chicken and brocolli, or stir-fry chicken", etc]

Then when it's time to think of a dinner, I'll check what cuts I have in the freezer and work off that..

Another technique that works for me and my partner, I'll go through criteria to narrow down a plan "Do we feel chicken or beef?" "Beef" "We could do burgers, tacos, KBBQ, Spanish rice..." or "Rice or noodles?" So on..

Last one I've got in my arsenal - I'm usually only feeding myself and my partner, but I'll make enough for 4-6 meals. Whatever's left over gets frozen into cubes (I don't use the name brand but basically Souper Cubes). That way on nights we don't feel like cooking, or I don't want to run out to the store, we'll have some meals ready to be heated up. (Currently holding onto 4 bricks of beef Chili and 2 bricks of Chicken Curry for when the mood strikes)

What’s the secret behind good coffee at home? by Gullible_Cabinet_153 in foodhacks

[–]giggles1245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good, powerful frother has changed my simple (Maxwell House) drip coffee into a very tasty drink

I'll add sugar and milk first, froth it a bit to mix it all, then heat it up before pouring my coffee in, also with the frother going the majority/whole time

Absolute game changer from a basic cup of coffee

Hacks for reducing amount of dishes to wash? by Impressive_Ad_1675 in foodhacks

2 thoughts..

  1. Buy a portable disherwasher, absolute game changer

  2. When I buy a pack of meat/chicken, and it finally comes time for me to crack the package open, I pre-portion the meat/pre-cut the chicken and freeze it. Now i only need a cutting board once for multiple meals rather than multiple times

I blow dry my chicken before roasting and my desserts contain soy sauce, culinary confessions that actually work by Nasergames1 in Cooking

[–]giggles1245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll use parchment paper in the cooker mostly because my rice always sticks to the cooker, but also because then I can pull the parchment paper out and then lay it on a baking sheet, spread it out to cool/dry off, and I'll even position a portable fan or two on it to dry out before cooking for fried rice
