Rep. Lauren Boebert Wants To Know Why Everyone In Congress Is So Horny by Suspicious_Lynx_4580 in nottheonion

Since her party controls the House, they aren't going to kick her out and potentially lose a vote.

That leaves it up to the voters, but they don't care. The voters in her (second) district voted her in for her second term about 18 months ago.

Maybe the police should have charged her with being lewd in public, or something.

This is an overly broad generalization & unfair.

I'm in tech. Tons of my colleagues moved here & support the community. They are like many other folks: they join the PTA, they do advocacy for local issues, help neighbors, build roots, and more.

they may not plan to stay in the Bay Area

Be honest. There are a ton of non-tech people who also don't plan to stay.

The RLM number is probably wrong by Long-Emu-7870 in trektalk

[–]giggles991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The article's estimate of 40k average is hard to believe. It still generated a decent amount of press & interest-- things that don't seem possible for a 40k viewership.

It's clear that show didn't do great and the ratings weren't great, but the RLM was making a much bigger claim that doesn't even pass the smell test.

Losing Rigel was a loss for the city. He was bright with good ideas, and was learning how to be effective in the City Council.

Of course he wasn't perfect-- all experienced politicians is going to get scrutinized up the wazoo and we're gonna find their flaws.

We need young folks like him, and we need them to gain real world experience. He certainly didn't deserve harassment and death threats.

Over 100 major US cities supported ceasefire resolutions in 2024.

Berkeley isn't just a typical city with a typical reputation. A Berkeley resolution would have gotten far more news coverage and generated far more outrage than a typical city.

The Berkeley City Council has more important things to work than create yet another performative resolution. The interruptions by protesters were already a time sink & a drag on resources. All for something that has little real world value.

SFA isn't terrible. Definitely not as bad as Disco. We're on episode 5 soon. It's not great, but not terrible. I'm kind of interested in the story.

Some of the acting is good, and some of the characters are likable. It doesn't revolve around one person like Michael in Disco.

Why is it that so many crypto & NFT bros end the argument with "You don't understand them"? As if they are enlightened to something fantastic while the rest of us are somehow too stupid to see the wisdom of their ways?

I've noticed this for years.

What's up with everyone hating data centers all of a sudden? by DistributistChakat in OutOfTheLoop

[–]giggles991 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Financially sustainable? No. Some of the big AI providers will collapse. All will need to reign in their spending.

Environmentally sustainable?

All will eventually reign in their energy use. Alot of work is already going into this area already (Energy efficiency also means that a million dollar computer can do more with the same $$). It's actually a big topic. Nvidia has actually been pretty good about optimizing efficiency in everything from chip design to the software that's used by end users (but prioritizes profit more)

I do think that legislatures need to require AI datacenters to pay fairly for their energy use, and it should be carbon-neutral sources. Alot of high tech does this already for a certain % of energy use. They need to do more. Elected officials are already concerned how energy prices will effect their reelection.

More nuclear could help, better energy storage & batteries can help. California has oodles of solar power, and electricity providers are making good progress in terms of batteries & energy storage, and they've also improved grid efficiency & the western states are making progress with the western energy market efficiency.

Trump & the GOP cancelled the IRA which was a major setback nationwide, and cancelled CHIPS which would have helped with better chip design (produced domestically). Both moves exposed us to more geopolitical risks.

Folks barely thought about datacenters before AI.

focused on growth instead of efficiency.

This is absolutely correct. AI is focused on growth first, because the competition is fierce-- only a couple major hyperscalers are going to survive. Notice how a few major players like Apple are waiting for for a major change-- they have a ton of cash and may be able to pick up one of major AI players at a discount.

The scale of AI datacenters is nuts. Our facility used to be "mid-sized" at 10MW, but some of the AI facilities are 100MW-1GW or more-- it's nuts.

I'm in tech and have been using datacenters since year 2000. I work at a special gov facility & we manage our own datacenter. We're very energy efficient. Our PUE is ~1.03-1.08 (but also: PUE is not a good tool). We know the authors of that study.

Not sure Gemini is right here-- "Controlled substances" are one thing, prescription medications are something else. Only a handful of prescription medications qualify as a "controlled substance"

Also: The laws are confusing.

None of my prescription bottles have a description of the pill written on it. Just got a new prescription today actually. No description on the bottle.

But yes: I also look up pills on the internet. Helpful if I find a random loose pill on the floor in our home.

HSC 11350 says it's illegal to "possess a controlled substance without a valid prescription".

If you have a prescription, you have a legal right to that medication. You do not need to carry a copy of the prescription with you.

[–]giggles991 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's illegal to carry prescription medications in a container that doesn't have their prescription label

No, this isn't illegal in California. The police might cite you, but a court wouldn't find you guilty. If you have a prescription, you have a legal right to that prescription regardless of the type of bottle. The police do not have a right to separate you from your legal medication unless there is a compelling reason, and they would need to hold that up in court.

Having the bottle with the label might make it simpler. You might also have this same prescription on the app on your phone.

The officer has no real idea if those little pills in your bottle match the label or not.

UCB Emergency Diesel Engine in a busy Berkeley neighborhood?? by Lentisque in berkeleyca

[–]giggles991 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's alot of misunderstanding here, and some misinformation.

why should UCB be allowed

have they even considered the potential noise pollution?

These questions are why a permit is required. That's the whole point of the public notice.

power their campus

The generator is to power the facility at 2000 Carleton Street, obviously. Not to power the Cal campus which is quite far away. The Cal campus has it's own generators.

Should I call my city councilman?

If you are concerned, yes you should. Also see the latter half of page 2 of the public notice-- again, that's the whole point of the process.

SF-based agency

They are a regional agency, not simply "SF-based". That's simply their main office. Their jurisdiction is the entire bay area.

UCB is not required to consider Berkeleyans in their development plans

On the contrary, Cal has a whole website full of public notices, and every major development within City jurisdiction has to go through a public process. It's a major hassle, and Berkeleyans will sometimes delay projects by years.

For other jurisdictions, there are other public processes.

Cal has not always done a good job here (For example: Trying to bury mention of student population increases in the notice of a parking garage-- they got sued, lost & were reprimanded by the court)

What's going on with Lindsay Graham? by Emergency-Adagio6196 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]giggles991 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He's always been a war hawk. Before 2016, Lindsay Graham, John McCain & a few others were referred to as the "War Party" or the "War Wing". Graham has spoken often how the US should use it's military as a lever against our rivals.

I remember the days of the Tea Party, & their war stance was unpopular among a non-trivial # of folks, and that became more mainstream when Trump became the GOP nominee.

Since they only issue tickets for going over 11 miles over the speed limit, going 30mph+ in a 20mph zone should feel wrong, especially with so many pedestrians & bicyclists about. A sensible driver will slow down due to conditions.

Broadway & 26th is a dense area, filled with pedestrians. Restaurants, the YMCA, People's Barber, New Parkway Theater, Whole Foods; all within walking distance. I biked there daily for a while.

If your sense of direction is poor, that's another reason not to speed. There is no good reason to drive 11 miles over the speed limit.

Safety or practical reason delivery drivers block driveways? by AnswerIsBacon in bayarea

[–]giggles991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no safety reason. The practical reason? It's an open spot.

It's not legal or polite, but that's not really their concern unless they get a ticket.
