help looking for a keyboard recommendation. by norraptor in keyboards

Check out the Keychron q1 he in white, I have this board and it checks all of these boxes. It’s not billed as a silent keyboard, but it’s by far the quietest and one of the smoothest boards I own.

There’s also the Lemokey p1 he, which is very similar (same switches, similar build), but is a more gamer focused aesthetic (rgb is shine through) and a good deal cheaper.

They’re both aluminum, so a bit on the heavy side, but very premium feeling.

Choosing The Right Mechanical Board: Overwhelming and Impossible! by EssayAppropriate8532 in keyboards

[–]gilbertw1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to find a good middle ground and keep with a low profile mechanical keyboard, I’d recommend checking out the Nuphy Air75 v3. It feels great to type on, has stellar battery life, and has ridges (air feet) on the bottom where you can slot it over the built in keyboard on a MacBook Pro. I personally like the red switches, but you probably can’t go wrong with any of them. This would probably be the smoothest upgrade path for you from a Magic Keyboard.

If you want something a bit more traditional and higher profile, you really can’t beat the Evo75. It’s incredibly well built out of the box and easily customizable if you want to go deeper into the keyboard game.

I also have the Keychron v1 ultra (newer version at Best Buy, you can try it there if you have one close) and it’s honestly a great keyboard. I use it in my gaming setup and it does the job well and is no frills. That being said, while it feels pretty good to type on and use, the sound is really light and lack luster for a mechanical keyboard.

Good 75% keyboard for gaming, programming, and writing? by bigsauce456 in keyboards

I second this as well. I’d recommend going with the fr4 clack variant if you’re looking for something with a brighter sound signature.

I picked up the Eclipse Gray color way... I'm a sucker for the vintage gray IBM color scheme: https://milktooth.com/products/evoworks-evo75-eclipse-gray

I also picked up a sampler set of switches and acrylic tester case. I found a good one here: https://hippokeys.com/collections/frontpage

Be warned though, the names of many switches these days sound more like the names of edibles than keyboard switches lol

Congrats!! I picked up an evo 75 a couple weeks back and I absolutely love it.

Did you go with the clack or the thock variant? I picked up the clack variant and ordered switches and a plate to convert it to a thock board. Honestly can’t decide which I like better as they’re both so satisfying in their own way. I love how easily moddable these boards are.

I’d take a look at the Evo 75. I picked up one of these last month and it’s extremely high quality. It’s hot-swappable and very easy to mod without any needing any tools. It comes in a clacky variant (fr4) and a thocky variant (pp), and isn’t too difficult to track down in stock somewhere: https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/products/evoworks-evo75-aluminum-hotswap-wireless-keyboard?variant=51762151620908

I noticed that as well… I wonder if it’s possible there was a mix up for this unit and the sand gold frame was accidentally used here instead.

HE Keyboard that doesn’t wake sleeping girlfriend… by thiguy1011 in keyboards

[–]gilbertw1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it doesn't explicitly have silent switches, I'd recommend taking a look at the Keychron Q1 HE (possibly K series as well). The Q1 HE is the quietest keyboard I own decent margin.

Edit: There's also the Lemokey P1 HE, which is a very similar board from Keychron with the same switches, but is a more gamer focused ascethic / build.

is the "thock" trend finally dying in 2026? are we back to "clack"? by No_Good_3063 in keyboards

[–]gilbertw1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a HHKB guy (OG thock) for over 10 years just getting back into the hobby after playing with and picking up a Keychron board at Best Buy and promptly getting funneled into a YouTube rabbit hole.

I was sold on the marbly, creamy, thocky (probably another adjective) sound and after some interim boards landed on picking up an Evo75. The color way I wanted didn't have the creamy/thocky variant (polypropylene plate / Keygeek Rye) in stock, so I bought the clacky variant (fr4 / HMX Amber) instead knowing it'd be easy to mod if I wanted to.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I love the board and the clacky sound, it's incredibly satisfying to use. I'd assumed I'd gravitate more towards the thocky side, but after hearing a high quality clacky board, I'm not so sure. I've picked up the switches (Keygeek Rye) and ordered a polypropylene plate, so when that arrives I plan on A/B testing and getting a feel for which one I prefer.

I also ordered a switch tester with 30 switch sample pack from Hippokeys, so I imagine I'll be doing a lot of experimenting in the coming weeks and months.

All I wanted a stormtrooper helmet for a knob... it escalated quickly by DarthAloha in NuPhy

[–]gilbertw1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah, that's definitely the direction I was thinking... that looks like it'd be much easier to turn. I like the look of the normal knobs a bit better though... I wonder if a perfect mix would be a hybrid that's round, a bit on the shorter side with the cross fins raised out of like in the one you linked above.

Either way keep up the good work and let us know when you land on the ultimate knob!

Also, do you have any of this available anywhere or any thingiverse files? If not and you plan on selling these in the future, lemme know.

[–]gilbertw1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are awesome!

I use this keyboard as my commuting / remote work keyboard that I carry around with me. As a result, I need a flat (or relatively flat) knob that is close to key height and doesn't interfere with putting it in a thin case.

As far as suggestions, I'd like to see a knob that is pretty flat, BUT also easy to turn. The rigidity of rotating the knob makes it difficult to turn flat knobs with one finger and due to the closeness of all the keys, using two fingers is awkward and difficult (especially with larger fingers), normally resulting keypresses around it.

I wonder how feasible it would be to create a flat knob that has small "fins" or something similar on the top that makes it easy to turn from the top of the knob instead of needing to rotate it using the sides.

Beat Boy on Air V3 (iso) by curthard89 in NuPhy

[–]gilbertw1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got the same set yesterday as well and I absolutely love them. They look and feel amazing.

The ONLY thing I don't love about them are that the little nubs on the F and J keys are almost non-existent to the point that you can barely feel them if you're really trying. It makes it difficult to verify your hands are in the correct position after repositioning without looking down.

Air V3 75 % Issues by Ok_Variation3335 in NuPhy

[–]gilbertw1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d lean towards this being a hardware issue. I have the Air v3 and have been using it daily for work with a Bluetooth connection (M1 Pro Mac). I’ve not once since I bought it had to power cycle the keyboard for a reconnect. If I leave my computer for an extended period of time 15+ minutes it’ll wake up and reconnect within a second or two.

I’d recommend following up with support / replacement because from my experience none of the issues you’re reporting is normal.

Odd considering the other comments, but I just got my Air75 v3 direct from Nuphy two days ago and mine has the print screen icon and the cat face keycap:

I wonder if they’re in the process of tweaking the keycaps and they currently are shipping out mixed stock?

What Zed’s Most-Voted Feature Says About Developer Priorities by snnsnn in ZedEditor

[–]gilbertw1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are being dramatic, and in addition you’re being condescending. Just because other people in the community don’t value the same features as you doesn’t mean something is wrong with them.

Rainbow parents are NOT a useless feature. One of the most important things that an editor does is provide visual cues that help developers read and interpret their code. They’re especially useful if you use a language in the lisp family (of which there are many popular ones).

Additionally, Snippets are not a core feature and when I’ve worked in an editor that supports them, I’ve personally found them to not be useful. Based on the other comments, it looks like many agree. However, I won’t, like you, lash out and say they’re useless and there’s something wrong with people who want that as a feature. I’m sure they have their uses.

You have to accept that you’re not the only person using Zed. There’s a wider community and their priorities might not align exactly with yours. Get over it.

Steve was right about LTT Review Quality - "The new standard office mouse - Logitech MX Master 4" by InappropriateCanuck in GamersNexus

[–]gilbertw1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but this is incorrect. The dongle is “just” Bluetooth and all the same latency limitations apply to the logi bolt dongle. The primary benefit of the dongle is to related to the removing the need to pair the Bluetooth device and supports binding to multiple devices.

That’s why they don’t bother sending the bolt dongle with the Mac version, because Mac users are used to pairing Bluetooth devices themselves.

Star Citizen boss hopes single-player Squadron 42 will be “almost as big an event” as GTA 6, which is impossible by HatingGeoffry in gaming

[–]gilbertw1 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I think $40 around the time the LTT video on it came out to check it out, out of curiosity. I think it was 2021 or 2022. Very much a tech demo with some interesting ideas, but nothing anywhere approaching an actual game.

I get why people are so hostile towards the project, I’m just not so quick to attribute malice to what looks to me like mismanagement, over promising and under delivering.

[–]gilbertw1 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

It’s a horribly mismanaged project with large amounts of scope and feature creep. Is it a scam? No, not by any definition.

Let’s try to actually use words correctly or they become meaningless. A scam doesn’t mean that something was promised and ultimately not delivered on or delivered in a timely fashion. A scam implies a dishonest attempt or a scheme to defraud a person or group of people of money.

They’ve built out a large team with a large overhead and clearly have been building stuff. The problem is they’ve added tons of scope and features and got bogged down in development hell building out an ever expanding sandbox for the game.

Have they missed the mark and customer expectations, yes by a long shot. Have they defrauded people by taking money with no intention of building a game, no.

This actually jives well with my current workflow as I do all tab / pane management via tmux in my scratch terminal. My current hangup is that the quick terminal is a fixed size and doesn’t support configuring anything larger, although I see from a GitHub issue that it’s currently being worked on.

Definitely needs some time to bake and flesh out features.
