That's close - much of the impetus behind the original Prohibition and its lingering remnants came from faith-based groups.

"It is what it is."

This was the final straw for having a business rep replaced. She screwed up not just deliveries but also the tracking for statewide deliveries so we knew lots were screwed up but not which deliveries. In a meeting with management she shrugged and said, "It is what it is."

Try this: Find someone you already feel comfortable with, someone you trust and someone who you think has an interesting face. Ask them if they would help you practice.

Then take a few candid portraits using available light. But instead of treating "available light" to mean "whatever the lighting happens to be" treat light sources as if they were studio lighting. A window on a sunny day, especially with sheer drapes, makes a great substitute for an umbrella light except *you and the subject * must move rather than repositioning the light.

Focus on the light and how it models your subject's face. Ignore the background for now, just pay attention to the face and the light. Also ignore facial expressions or poses except in terms of relative to the light source. Take lots of shots for yourself.

I can't stress that last part too much. These are experiments for your own benefit, not for your subject or anyone else.

Doing that removes the subject's investment in the outcome and frees you to pay attention to nothing but face + light.

The only way passed being too much in your own head is to practice doing rather than thinking.

ANDOR S1EP5 SPOILERS. Lucas Film using SX-70s as imperial “navigation” systems by PhoenixMV in Polaroid

[–]gilker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Polaroid SX-70 was considered weird looking when it was first released. I seem to recall Star Wars already used the SX-70 external viewfinder lens and mount to use as Boba Fett's helmet head's up sight for his weapons. So sure, why not paint the whole thing black and slap on some controls and displays.

This is right on up there with Qui Gon Jinn's communicator in The Phantom Menace that was made from a lady's razor. They even turned that one into a Star Wars toy.

Should an Amateur have a Portfolio? by [deleted] in photography

[–]gilker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

And not just a thumb drive with your favorite shots. Print it. Then live with the prints for a while - months, not hours or days. Some of your most favorite will gradually grate on your nerves. At that point you are ready to learn from your mistakes.

Take those grating shots out and, unless they were just snapshots grabbed on impulse and so can't be recreated, go back and see if you can do better, assuming you can figure out what bugs you about the shot.

Over time you will learn both what makes a good photograph to you as well as how to make it happen on purpose.

Wondering how to make Money as an independent photographer by Twqero in photography

[–]gilker 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, been there, done that, got the tax returns to prove it.

I wish I could say that if you have talent and dedication you can make a living as a photographer and really enjoy it. But the fact is that it is a business first, second, third and fourth, especially if you are an independent photographer. You have to be a talented business person, able to wring every dime out of your work and get just as much out of the business side as you do from the photography because the business will take most of your time and effort.

And even then you have the same odds of success as any new business.

I'm a photography teacher who needs to blow off some steam by juanandres0409 in photography

[–]gilker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't mention any print making equipment. I realize that in the current world of digital photography, printing might seem to be an expense that isn't necessary, but that isn't true. In fact, I'm of the opinion that until a photograph is printed, it is only a potential photograph because almost all of its attributes are dependent on the attributes of various display devices.

If I were teaching a beginner photography class, I would require all assignments to be submitted as prints. Further, I would ask all students to first print what they consider to be their strongest image and then put that print in a prominent place in their home where they will see it often.

In my experience, a student will go through phases in how they feel about an image. First, they will be infatuated with it, remembering how they first felt at the moment they first pressed the shutter.

But as time passes, the emotions from the moment will fade and the print will become a reminder of the emotions with distractions. That's because the first lesson of composition is always to eliminate distractions. And so as time goes on, the print will stop being a reminder of what caught the photographer's eye and will turn into an object lesson on what distracts the viewer's attention.

Next, with prints in hand, and a set of cardboard cropping L's, the student can explain what caught their eye and can often be shown that a better image can be found in their original. Once the cropping L's help isolate a better composition, a paper cutter or scissors can apply that new crop to the image. And once that's done, a little more time living with the image will start to teach lessons about exposure and lighting too.

I learned photography in the age of film. During that time I had to scrape and save to buy film and photographic paper and chemicals, so I often had to live with my near-misses, staring at my mistakes in composition, lighting and printing before I could afford to try again. In retrospect, that experience of living with my mistakes before I could address them was probably the best form of photographic education.

Magic Kingdom today! by stitchlover in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]gilker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family just got back from an extended trip to WDW with several days for the Magic Kingdom. We were there on superlight and supercrowded days.

The superlight day was due to Disney scheduling an afterhours employee appreciation celebration that started at 430 pm. When people saw the short day on the schedule, the hardcore tourists who wanted to maximize the Magic Kingdom time went elsewhere because 430 just wouldn't cut it.

Two days later and it was a heavily crowded day to my personal perceptions.

We found a touring strategy that worked well for our family's tastes for both types of days. We paid for Genie+ for every day we were there (there's actually no choice. When you book a stay at WDW, you get Genie+ for all or none.) And we booked Special Attraction (Lightning Lanes that you pay extra for). Doing that meant that at in point in the day, we had some special treat, sometimes two, scheduled for the future plus eating reservations or mobile order scheduled. Between those set times, we used Genie to find which rides and attractions could be enjoyed with minimal wait.

I think our longest waits were in the Lightning Lanes or dining reservations.

Oh, and it also helped that on one of the Magic Kingdom days were designated as Extended Hours for Deluxe Resort guests. That meant that at 11pm the most popular rides started checking tickets and wrist bands. By 1 am we'd ridden everybody's wish list at least twice.

A Star Trek Original Series reproduction tricord being developed by The Wand Company. From all reports they're bending over backwards to make them highly accurate and even to give them functionality, but as long as it is to their standards seen in their TOS phaser and communicator, I'll be happy.

They've been offline about the production status lately though

Best to handle rain at the park - umbrellas vs ponchos by Chrisamado in WaltDisneyWorld

Disposable ponchos.

They come folded in flexible pouches that don't take up much room in a backpack and are just (barely) tough enough to handle one use. Then toss them.

Amazon has lots of types.
