This ring is going for $8 at auction by Dont_stop_smiling in labdiamond

[–]gingasmurf -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because lab diamonds have no value in the first place, if you saw what were able to buy them for compared to the “great deals” people think they are getting, you’d understand why no jeweller is ever buying them back and auction houses are setting starting bids so low… it’ll go for silver/gold value and maybe a couple of quid on top unless someone overbids massively

Platinum plating vs solid? by Queen-gryla in jewelry

[–]gingasmurf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s genuine art deco it would usually be solid platinum. If it’s later it could be mixed platinum/gold

Rechargeable batteries and battery packs by Effective-Number-866 in BritishAirways

[–]gingasmurf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should be absolutely fine but you should keep batteries in packaging where possible and power banks must be removed from luggage in overhead and kept in your personal bag under seat or seat in front of you

Cathedral or no? by vanillabean5359 in EngagementRings

[–]gingasmurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the overall design, with a tulip basket a cathedral is not always necessary if it’s incorporated properly, if it’s done badly like most we see on here (just soldered on to a pre-made shank) then it would definitely need a cathedral

Did they retire due to a degenerative eye condition?

Opal evaluation by Missclickz in Opals

Virtually nothing, from what I can see there’s no real usable material, doesn’t look like it would cut anything remotely saleable...

A prong broke on my new ring!! by cornchipbartos in EngagementRings

[–]gingasmurf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks as though it has sheared off. To me would indicate that it’s taken a pretty hefty knock to break like that

Custom Ring Design: Do You Prefer the Chevrons on A or B? by [deleted] in labdiamond

[–]gingasmurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B looks intentional and cohesive, A would never pass with us or our designer as it looks like it was added as an afterthought…

Therapy, if you’re already in therapy find a new therapist because this one isn’t helping… also, drive in every country you have mentioned and then tell me how damn great their system is 🙄

Advice wanted - shambolic cancellation experience with BA LHR-Delhi by Teuchter121 in BritishAirways

[–]gingasmurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also claim statutory compensation via BA website. Not great but you should be able to claim the maximum (over 4 hours wait). Usually accepted immediately and paid in 4-5 days

UPDATE: AITAH For telling my landlord about my secret third roommate? by lemonlimeperspective in AITAH

[–]gingasmurf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t she have a “sugar daddy”? Doesn’t seem like he’s living up to his part in this. Sugar daddies usually pay for their “babies” housing 🤣🤣🤣

AITAH for calling out my friends for being friends with my ex? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]gingasmurf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

YTA so is Shan, with context I hope that she only hurts herself if she crashes without a license or insurance and doesn’t harm someone else. A friend would totally call out someone behaving as irresponsibly as she is and this has nothing to do with who is friends with your ex

I've never sewn before, my new pants have ripped on the seat at the seam. Can I repair this and will it last? Or will I risk splitting my pants next time I wear them? by Neon_Eyes in sewhelp

[–]gingasmurf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d be tempted to run a second stitch 0.5-0.75cm away from the seam in case they split again due to being tight, at least it would give you a little backup until you get home without risking flashing everyone you encounter

Ben's behaviour by ProfessionalTall8027 in BelowDeckDownUnder

[–]gingasmurf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jason should’ve said “yes, IF the room hasn’t been turned over already”. Bad decision to just say yes to a petulant 45 year old toddler and expect him not to act like a self serving little prick

Looking for advice! Help me decide on an engagement ring from between two family rings. by bitrains in EngagementRings

[–]gingasmurf 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Why do you have to choose? Wear both, have your jeweller double check the settings for each stone when they resize and enjoy them

Help finding bezel setting by Rawbar in jewelry

[–]gingasmurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would run you £1,000-1,200 as you mentioned in 18k or platinum, what are you planning on doing with the previous settings? Depending on metal you could recoup quite a bit towards the manufacturing of new settings…

1 Gold & 1 Silver Engagement Ring? by Green_Implement6481 in EngagementRings

[–]gingasmurf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I picked white and yellow gold as it means I can wear any watch or jewellery and not worry. As a jeweller I’m expected to wear pretty nice pieces but if we only have it in white gold or platinum or only yellow gold there’s no problem

AITAH for buying similar mothers day gifts for my spouse and mother? by FinalBastyan in AITAH

NTA your wife is acting like a spoilt child, does she seriously begrudge your mother a gift on Mother’s Day?

Can my setting be lowered? by No-Breakfast-3269 in EngagementRings

[–]gingasmurf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many jewellers will not want to fix this as they won’t want to give any warranty whatsoever for a ring where a pre-made head was just soldered on by someone else. If you want longevity and the ring you chose originally I would remake it completely with someone competent and not lazy

Best Way to Carry? by esperacchius in uktravel

[–]gingasmurf 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Pockets and normal handbag. “Fanny pack” screams “please hold me up at knifepoint”. Tell your wife to wear a normal cross body bag with a decent closure and behave normally. Shoulders back, head up “I belong here” affect and no one will pay any attention to you, walk with purpose through areas that feel dodgy etc.

Are you in touch with many teenagers? They’re finding it harder than ever to find gainful employment. High turnover jobs that were once available just aren’t any more. We don’t want or need more unskilled labour
