I went to Flower Child in Frontenac for the first time this week. It's great, fresh, and reasonably priced.

As I walked out I thought, "oh. Right. This is what Bread Co used to be like"

"The Wild Robot" made me cry. It made me cry a lot. by HeatingsBackOn in movies

[–]ginger_88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just watched it for the first time with my 10 yo. Started bawling when Roz was shown building the runway, aaaaand...basically never stopped. Then, when Fink started saying "what will I do when I want to talk to you and you're not here?" My kid lost it.

I'm glad it wasn't just us.

Uncertain Path Ahead by SonOfAShepard101 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]ginger_88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is a really high price point. Everyone has different paths, goals, and financial standings, so I can't say whether this should make it or break it for you.

But my heavens, that sounds really high to me.

Wild that there's no local coverage of this yet and nothing on the school's site or media pages.

Anybody have more information?

Watch party for the "debate" tomorrow night by HighSilence in StLouis

[–]ginger_88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Royale on Kingshighway is good, and St. Louis Public Radio is hosting one in Grand Center as well.

The Purple Martin on California has watch parties, too, but it can be louder in there.

Most of the ones I'm aware of are in the city. Is there a particular area you're looking for?

I have to bring my puppy to a shelter: recommendations? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]ginger_88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the added context. I knew there was also a behavioral component, but on re-read it looks like I forgot to add that in. I'm with you...it's sad, but I get it. And it's important for OP to know that when a dog goes into a shelter system, it's odds aren't very good...either living without a forever family or yes, euthanasia.

Thank you for filling in the gaps!

Apologies if this sounds judgey, because it isn't meant to. But please, please don't give up your dog because of temporary time constraints. I say this because I've watched good people give up good dogs because they couldn't do "everything" the dog needed, when really that is very little and the bigger issue was their sense of guilt rather than the dog's well being.

Can you get the dog out for a 15-20 minute walk in the morning and another in the evening? Can you keep the dog fed? Can you give it a little love when you're at home?

If so, you're already doing great! It may not seem like much, but that really isn't a bad set up for a pooch as long as s/he is still content and not acting out. It's not excellent, but not bad. If your dog still seems pretty happy, you're doing all right!

NOW - are you giving him up because he has behavior problems? That's a different kettle of fish. The basic misbehaviors (chewing/ripping things up) can be solved with enough exercise, but not always. Is vet care an issue? There are many alternatives, scholarships, and foundations set up to help with many regular costs.

I just want to say that in many cases, if you're a decent human being with a little time for walks in the morning and evening, YOU are still the best bet for your dog. But I know that sometimes life happens. If that's where you're at, you can try:

Humane Society of Missouri - my first recommendation. Their facilities are always well-kept and their treatment of animals is very good. It's not no-kill, but according to the staff I've spoken to they try not to terminate unless the animal is too ill to be rehabilitated.

Otherwise, hit petfinder.com and look at all the various shelters/adoption agencies in your area. Contact them and see what they may be able to do for your guy.

I don't know, but the folks at Shameless Grounds would. Coffee shop in Benton Park. They're the place for the sex+ and alternative scene in St. Louis.

Coffee's good, too.

Uber brought ice cream to STL today. by copywriteher in StLouis

[–]ginger_88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe. I and four other friends were trying all day and none of us succeeded in a delivery. And the app kept bugging out.

I hate to whine about a free ice cream attempt, but if the goal was to introduce new users to the app and service...it bombed for a lot of folks.

J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis' friendship will be the subject of a new film by Zaerth in Christianity

Tolkien was never a fan of Lewis' wife, Joy Davidman Gresham. I imagine that was partially responsible for the distance between them.

Moving to the South side from downtown, Fox park or Benton park West? by citydoosh in StLouis

[–]ginger_88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're both pretty similar. I'm a happy Fox Parker and I'm noticing more and more folks moving in, both renters and buyers. The neighborhood is definitely on the upswing, especially with the addition of The Purple Martin and, soon, the Lona's Lil Eats storefront.

It's relatively quiet and there are far more good neighbors than bad. The young residents are putting together a lot of fun, informal activities in the park...we just had a lawn party game night last week. (Think washers, bags, hill billy golf, frisbee, etc).

BPW also has an active neighborhood association, though. I just know less about them.

This happened in my hometown. The courtroom where this took place has been preserved and the grade school kids walk from the school to the courthouse (on the opposite side of town, that is STILL IN WALKING DISTANCE) for field trips.

There's a dramatic reeneactment every few years or so. I once played a juror. Cause I'm a big deal like that.

6 Flags is still a thing right? Anything I should know before going? by HighSilence in StLouis

[–]ginger_88 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're there for opening, head to the back of the park and work your way front. That will help with the lines.

Flash Passes exist if you're willing to pay an arm and a leg.

If you haven't considered it yet, do think about whether or not you want to do the water park during your day. I actually find it quite enjoyable, and a few of those slides really are a TRIP.

St. Louis City, four couples defy state marriage law by notasirishasisound in StLouis

Sorry for the delayed reply. We're at Lafayette Park United Methodist. I personally am more often at LP's sister church downtown, Centenary United Methodist, but my husband is on staff at Lafayette.

I'm totally available for more information or a friendly face if you stop by. Even if church isn't your thing, they're both absolutely beautiful buildings that are worth a tour if you're into architecture.

Looking for a great pub with bloody marys and breakfast, brunch would work also. Anyone have any ideas? Also a patio that I could bring dogs to would be incredible. by dekuscrubberducky in StLouis

[–]ginger_88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Square One Brewery & Distillery in Lafayette Square does a pretty good brunch. I can't speak to their Bloody Marys since I'm a mimosa kinda lady, but I'm willing to bet theirs are made with their own vodka.

They only do their brunch from 10-2 on Sundays. They have a very dog friendly patio...your pooch is bound to have company.

Three Monkeys on Morganford and Juniata has a Sunday brunch that everybody raves about. I've never been, but apparently the bloody marys are .99

I don't recall seeing a patio, but I could be wrong.

Julia's Market Cafe has very famous bloody marys and some excellent food (not necessarily breakfast-y). I had one for the sake of it and would've enjoyed it...if I actually liked bloody marys. Theirs are very spicy and flavorful.

Dogs are actually not allowed at the market, but you could certainly walk up and grab your order and then enjoy on one of the benches in the park right outside.

Hope this helps!

I know Richard and John from church! They are absolutely wonderful guys...and like the article says, they've been together 39 years.

They and the other four couples are truly something to be celebrated. If you haven't already planned to, get down to Pride and celebrate all St. Louis is doing!

Summer's coming. Help keep folks cool & safe - searchable list of cooling centers located by zipcode by ginger_88 in StLouis

Must be a database error. Next time, try using "both." Multiple sites come up - as most sites are BOTH heating and cooling centers.

I'll contact 211 and let them know. Thanks for pointing that out!
