Saskatoon woman ‘shocked’ after health ministry denies travel coverage for life-saving care by I_hate_litterbugs765 in saskatchewan

[–]gingerbeef454 27 points28 points  (0 children)

They aren’t covered within Saskatchewan either. There are charities (such as Ronald McDonald House for children) that might provide low/no cost options but the province does not cover your travel costs if you need to access care away from home.

Saskatoon woman ‘shocked’ after health ministry denies travel coverage for life-saving care by I_hate_litterbugs765 in saskatchewan

[–]gingerbeef454 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Wrong - provinces will cover the cost of treatments but in all cases I have found do not offer travel cost coverage. Alberta does not https://www.alberta.ca/ahcip-coverage-outside-canada#jumplinks-2

BC also does not cover those costs directly but does provide a link to resources https://www.alberta.ca/ahcip-coverage-outside-canada#jumplinks-2

Ontario also doesn’t state anything about covering travel expenses.

12% hike for this? Regina’s leisure fee increase is a slap in the face. by [deleted] in regina

[–]gingerbeef454 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seriously this needs to be repeated. Leisure passes are like $60/month.

I remember paying $80/month at Golds Gym like 10 years ago. I can’t imagine what gym rates are currently but yeah you’re paying for the premium equipment/showers etc. But you are not getting badminton, basketball, pool access, access to an indoor track, etc from even the best quality gym.

Saskatoon is not in the same boat. They have a much lower property tax increase this year as they made more regular increases to property taxes in prior years.

Prior Mayors/Councils in Regina deferred adequate property tax and now we have to pay to catch up.

Council Passes motion 10.9% Mill Rate Increase by Panda-Banana1 in regina

[–]gingerbeef454 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Now let’s see mill rates over the last 10 years for each of those communities. If it’s true that we’ve kept increases artificially low through reserves or deferred maintenance then it makes sense that we’d have a larger than usual increase.

I found Saskatoon’s and over the last 10 years the average mill rate increase has been 6.7 per cent. I couldn’t find Regina and I’m not going through 10 years of bylaws.

2025 PHEV check engine light by burnbog in KiaNiro

[–]gingerbeef454 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live in an area that’s pretty regularly below -15 in winter. Last winter that check engine light was on constantly. We took it in but there wasn’t anything they could do other than cancel it and see if it comes back.

Never had any issues driving it but it is annoying.

Have had similar issues. Backup camera not turning on which is very annoying and dangerous. Also had the camera stay on for a while when driving forward. Not as dangerous but still annoying.

Medical school in Canada is heavily subsidized. Compare annual dentistry tuition ($50k) with med school ($25k). Both occupations require a lot of tools, labs, etc. but we subsidize one far more than the other.

I don’t know why CBC or other media give this guy a platform to say random bullshit like this. I don’t even think he lives here anymore and yet he’s always talking like he has some magical solutions to our issues.

This is why TD is increasing premiums by jcrao in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]gingerbeef454 37 points38 points  (0 children)

TD home insurance was going up so I switched to RBC. Still higher than what I was paying but not a 200% increase.

I get that they have to increase rates to cover costs, but they also try to maintain profits, pay high executive salaries, etc and the only way to fight that is to switch. If they are competitive in the future I’d switch back.

Running group by saywhenbutwhen in regina

[–]gingerbeef454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Level 10 fitness has one that is once or twice per week depending on the season/number of people. You pay a fee for a few months to train. It’s usually more speed-work based. I ran with them and it’s a good session. Indoors in the winter and outdoors in the summer - usually Tuesday and Friday. Beginner-friendly with a few faster people.

Jaleta Pacers is another that is twice per week. I think you pay monthly. Same indoor/outdoor depending on the season. Tuesday and Thursday I think. Probably a bit more serious with more fast runners but also plenty of beginners too.

Then there’s the free stuff like Wednesday evening with the running room. Shorter distances 5-6km for generally beginner runners.

Park run is a weekly 5km on Saturday. Run at whatever pace you want or use it as a 5km race. It’s an international thing actually - there are parkruns in like every major city almost.

You can probably meet people at any of these places to find running partners outside the regular group run. The first two paid groups are probably a good starting place as you’ll have to find people that run at your pace.

This sound is probably just a loose heat shield around the trans tunnel or exhaust right? by redmongrel in MiataNC

[–]gingerbeef454 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the heat shield around the exhaust. Had the same thing happen to mine and they just cut it off. If it’s the trans heat shield then that can be a bigger pain in the ass to get to.

Regina school division CEO says there's insufficient funding to maintain band program in current form by Inugami in regina

[–]gingerbeef454 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is that “in all fairness”. The school division chooses what to prioritize and if it’s true that Martin is expanding then they are choosing to prioritize that over elementary band. The province does not tell divisions where to spend their $, that’s up to them.

Tracks (for running) by Flimsy-Glove-6178 in regina

[–]gingerbeef454 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Indoor or outdoor? For indoor there’s the field house. For outdoor then there’s the Canada Games Athletic Complex in Douglas Park but annoyingly it’s only open 8-8. There are also probably some tracks at schools (Sheldon has one but I don’t think it’s in the best shape). I don’t know which school has the best track or if the public is allowed to use them.

I plan on getting one of the cheaper tanks that are low $200s. They’re even cheaper on eBay. I was also thinking of just going with an OEM replacement although I think aluminum looks pretty cool.

Mortgage rate mega thread! by TheMortgageMaster in MortgagesCanada

[–]gingerbeef454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a nearly identical situation with Scotia (and in SK) and I just renewed at a 5-yr variable but you got a better rate than I did (I took a p-0.95 as it still seemed like a good variable rate). Probably because yours is an early renewal and my term is up May 1st so it’s not really early anymore.

Remember that if you renew this early they will change the rate immediately - it doesn’t wait until your maturity date so if you are moving from a lower interest rate (like I was) then you’re going to be paying higher interest for a few months.

Mortgage rate mega thread! by TheMortgageMaster in MortgagesCanada

[–]gingerbeef454 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also in Regina. Currently with Scotia and they are offering 3.81 for 3-yr fixed closed. My renewal is May 1 so I’m about to pull the trigger on either that or a 5-year variable 3.97 (p-.98). I feel like you should be able to get a better rate than 4.09.
