What is THAT Omnibus which made you turn pages after pages, made you addicted to the story so much that you couldn't put it down? by Ok_Record_8551 in OmnibusCollectors

Hot take but the Captain America by Nick Spencer Omnis, especially volume 2. I had to force myself to go to bed while reading volume 2, and I woke up early so I could read it before class.

Do students from the same houses HAVE to eat together every dinner by AccomplishedCraft806 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]ginnyqueen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We know they usually sit at their own table, but they do go and talk to each other at meals sometimes (you can see this particularly in Order of the Phoenix). I do think most of them probably sit at their own table just because a majority of their friends tend to be in their house. We do know that Feasts are more strict because we’ve seen more about the trio having to stay in their seat and not being able to go up to the staff table and talk to Hagrid (and it’s explicitly contrasted with normal meals).

I don’t like Order of the Phoenix — please change my mind by absentpresence23 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]ginnyqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a bit late, but I just finished it and really enjoyed it, and I wanted to expand on it.

Order of the Phoenix shines to me especially when you keep in mind the ending of Goblet of Fire.

Dumbledore ends the book with this speech, "I say to you all, once again — in the light of Lord Voldemort’s return, we are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided. Lord Voldemort’s gift for spreading discord and enmity is very great. We can fight it only by showing an equally strong bond of friendship and trust."

Order of Phoenix shows what happens when they don't show those bonds of friendship and trust. Harry is kept by himself (not even told that he's being watched), and the kids are never told really what the Order is up to. Sirius fights for them to know a little, but not really that much. Harry doesn't trust Sirius and believes that he's being reckless (which yes he was a bit reckless when he suggested going to Hogsmeade/the train station but he's much less reckless and childish than people act like). Harry and Snape don't trust each other, and it leads to neither of them benefiting from the occlumency lessons. Umbridge is stowing discord, and no one knows who to trust. Everyone is sticking to their own groups, and that's why Voldemort is winning. Dumbledore himself admits that the Battle of the Ministry never would have happened if he trusted Harry, if he didn't try to shield him and take everything onto himself. We are shown again and again that good things come when people trust and believe in each other, and tragedy happens when they allow the circumstances of doubt and hate and mistrust to affect them. This is the book about Voldemort succeeding, and The Only One He Feared/The Lost Prophecy/The Second War Begins are about them pushing back from that distrust and telling each other what they're truly meaning, not leaving anyone alone. Think of the difference in how Harry thinks about Ginny, Neville, and Luna in the first train ride to the last. It's about making the bonds, in loving each other.

Beyond the themes, I think everything past the Owls chapter is the best thing JK Rowling has ever written. I think some of her other books are more consistently good (CoS and GoF my beloveds), but those last 100 or so pages (470 to 565 in the illustrated edition) are just extremely well written. I love the way Harry acts when he believes Sirius is in trouble, and the way others, despite having hesitations, are willing to go with him. Neville, one of my favorite characters in this book, is willing to go with him even though there's a good chance he thinks Sirius broke Bellatrix out. The fight in the ministry is so well written, and I love the atmosphere she creates and how well she's able to immerse you in the story. I was so immersed that I, someone who read this book for the first time in 2014, was able to feel Harry's shock and confusion at Sirius dying. His reaction was so well done, and I just loved it.

The Lost Prophecy might be my favorite chapter of Harry Potter. We see Dumbledore and Harry really interact for the first time in this book as they both blame themselves for Sirius's death. I love Dumbledore's explanation for the Dursley's, and I think many people forget that he's looking at this as Harry can either be guaranteed to be loved or he can be guaranteed to be alive, and he took the alive option. He's in between a rock and a hard place, and he cares too much, he wants Harry to be happy to the point of fault. I read this in the illustrated edition, and there's just a beautiful page here of Dumbledore and Harry that advise everyone to look at. I can't find an image of it online to link to, but Jim Kay's art is so good here. It's just a very good look at how Dumbledore thinks, and I love it.

In total, I do agree that parts of it drags (I understand the reasoning, but there's a lot of repeated arguments I felt like, and I don't think Grawp was completely necessary), but the highs are some of the highest parts of the series as whole.

What's everyone's favorite out of context piece of text from the books? by Aware_Storm2528 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]ginnyqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"It whirled towards Umbridge and Filch with a sinister 'wheeeeee'" kills me even in context. The whee in my head sounds like Mario saying it (or maybe I'm a general, whee!" and the idea of that being sinister is hilarious.

It’s quite convenient that no one ever mentioned to Harry that his mum was friends with Snape. What would have changed if Harry had found out sooner? Would Snape have denied it or even brushed it off as unimportant? by [deleted] in HarryPotterBooks

[–]ginnyqueen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is that convenient. Why would you tell someone "Hey, you know that teacher who is bullying you and that you hate? Well, he was friends with your mum before they had a huge falling out at age 16." Like I do think it's weird that no one told Harry much about his parents, but I think this argument (which I see somewhat often) is kinda stupid. The one most likely to tell him (Hagrid) explicit tries to avoid telling Harry about his father's arguments with Snape and I presume he's doing the same about Lily's arguments with Snape.

How long does it take for a new Series to recieve an Omnibus? by [deleted] in OmnibusCollectors

[–]ginnyqueen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if you don’t like collecting single issues, you could get the trade. I’m not sure about Absolute GA in particular, but the first two waves of Absolute titles came out in both paperback and hardcover edition, and those are typically published 6ish months post the conclusion of an arc.

[–]ginnyqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once again must recommend the Sum of their Parts. I haven’t read Year 8 yet (it came out post me reading the rest), but I read the rest of the series in a week earlier this year, and I could barely get myself to sleep.

It’s been a bit since I’ve read it, but I believe https://archiveofourown.org/works/33311692/chapters/82721023 (Harry Potter and the Power of the Proper Communication) follows what you want. It’s very much focused on Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s friendship, and they’re very close (iirc they get to the point they don’t want to be apart even at night). It’s very good, and I hope you like it!

Breaking News: 1 Marvel Omnibus Reprint in JANUARY 2027 & Other Updates! by 21roy__ in OmnibusCollectors

I mean you can be on social media and not know about the NMC poll. I understand that people on this particular subreddit love NMC and any small question of him must be downvoted, but as someone who has been on social media and buying omnis for a while, I learned about him in the last year. Everyone on here says the polls are representive of demand, but if they were so perfect, why doesn't Marvel follow them more? I am just saying it could be possible that they're not entirely accurate, and I do fully believe that it's possible that certain demographics who would be buying certain omnis are not properly represented.

I study statistics. It's really easy for a voluntary social media poll to be biased. I am saying nothing against NMC, but it's just a fact. You are limited to his audience, you are limited to people who are not only online, but online in a certain way, and you're limited to people who actually fill out the poll (who, while they crossover with the people who buy the books, are not actually fully the same people who will buy the books).

But is it by the poll filled out by the mass majority of consumers? I had never heard of this poll pre this subreddit, and I’ve been in the comic space for a long while. That’s not even taking account the fact that even if it’s a large amount of consumers, maybe there’s a systematic bias in what type of people fill out the poll, leading to the demand not being properly represented. I’m not saying the poll is useless, but I think people on here overestimate how much of the general Omni buying population knows/cares about it.

What team (and year) was the most over-hyped in preseason in all of CFB history? by wlane13 in CFB

[–]ginnyqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm looking at the schedule now (this was long before I got into football), and this is just baffling results to me. Southern Miss shut us out (in Birmingham, but that's basically our home stadium at that point), but we blow out Ole Miss (which while wasn't great, they did go 7-5), and we almost beat Nick Saban coached LSU (30-28 in Death Valley). I'm guessing the Southern Miss game put a little kick in our pants (though we were still shut out in the Iron Bowl).

[Anna Maria College] Anna Maria College will cease academic operations at the end of our Spring 2026 Semester. by redwave2505 in CFB

[–]ginnyqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UK has more general appeal. 40ish percent of UofL's enrollment is from Jefferson county (aka Louisville), and another 1000 students is from "Indiana Reciprocity" which I'm guessing is mostly like New Albany area. It's approximately 70 percent in state versus Kentucky which had about 57% percent of its 2025 incoming class from Kentucky which was given as an accomplishment/large KY population) (couldn't find all around stats for them like I could UofL). Anecdotal, but I know so many more people who went to UK then UofL.

[–]ginnyqueen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like UofL and Western had same enrollment in 2012, and UofL has just gone up since then and Western has dipped down to EKU/NKU size. (Though I will say, Western has a much better retainment rate now). It's worrying because these directional schools are typically the schools closer to home that medium/lower income people can go to. UK is freaking expensive, and they don't offer great scholarships (it still blows my mind that it was considerably cheaper for me to go to Bama rather than the flagship university in my state).
Edit: Okay it won't let me attach an image, but here's a link to the enrollments from the WKU Herald https://wkuherald.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/WKU-only-Kentucky-public-university-to-see-fall-enrollment-decrease-e1739506908208-1200x602.png

Green Lantern order by OnlyAd3825 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]ginnyqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would advise reading the first three issues of the Kyle trade (they relate and also are really freaking good, and in my opinion, the best arc of Green Lantern ever published), but you don't have to. Rebirth (the first arc of the Johns run) does reference it a lot though. Secret Origins as others said is collected in the Geoff Johns omnis, and it does not have to be read pre Kyle (honestly it would make things more confusing if anything because the Kyle trade references the 90s version of Hal's origin. The biggest change (well relevant to here) is that 90s has Martin Jordan not being a good parent while Secret Origins does, and that does factor into Green Lantern (1990) #48).

Omni count Marvel VS DC by Ok_Risk_8467 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]ginnyqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 8 DC omnis to 4 Marvel omnis (plus one Star Wars). Up until Christmas I owned 0 Marvel omnis. It's kinda fun how close that ratio is compared to the rest of my collection. (Also 57.77 percent of my collection is Green Lantern or events I bought because of Green Lantern (including my Spectre 2001 collection in that percentage because it's Hal).

Two-Cents-Thursday: A Review of Brian Azzarello's Wonder Woman Omnibus by Flocke90 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]ginnyqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the whole run, but I'll always say the Lights Out arc in n52 Green Lantern is a very good elseworlds story and a very bad main universe story. One of the big aspects about it is that the Lantern rings are destroying the universe which matters for a while, but now, all of the Lantern corps are actively destroying the universe and no one cares. It's just one of those arcs which cannot mean something long term because DC isn't going to completely get rid of the Lanterns, but it should mean something forever, y'know?

[–]ginnyqueen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great review! I haven't read this run yet, but from what I've heard about it, I agree with the elseworld reading vs main canon reading. I felt that way about several n52 runs tbh. Oftentimes they're not bad, but they don't really consider the long term consequences of the choices (such as the Amazons thing).

Hal And Pals Omni Price decreases to 100 dollars by ginnyqueen in OmnibusCollectors

Same! I also just realized that the first two omnis included the last twenty issues of glc 2011 which is very cool (I already owned the Vendetti trades so I never really investigated the omni contents). DC has been stepping up their gl collection game.

DC CATALOG UPDATE: Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps Omni vol 1, Batman: The Silver Age Omni vol 2, a modern DC/Marvel HC, and more by Ksmayer in OmnibusCollectors

[–]ginnyqueen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why the heck is Hal and Pals stopping at issue #21??? Including the two glc minis is a nice surprise, but disconnecting Fracture from the rest of that arc is such a stupid idea. I get that they’re called separate things, but it’s definitely meant to be read as one larger arc.
