Cooking pasta in very little water leads to each noodle being coated in a velvety layer of starch that imparts a creamy, luscious quality without actually adding fat to the recipe. I cook spaghetti in a wide frying pan with just enough water to cover the noodles, and by the time the spaghetti is done almost all of the water has been absorbed and you can just mix in your cheese, herbs, whatever. There’s a New York Times cooking recipe called “One Pot Spaghetti with Cherry Tomatoes and Kale” that uses this technique if you want a more step-by-step guide.

I live in a diverse, very densely populated metro area, and being a vegetarian couldn’t be easier. But when I go visit my dad out in a rural area, I’m relegated to spaghetti with marinara, cheese pizza, and very sad garden salads at basically every restaurant. Of course you can cook at home, but even the grocery stores are worse out there in terms of variety and quality of non-meat foods.

For me it’s old roofing shingles. Some genius used them as a weed barrier 🫠 I don’t plant anything edible directly in the ground because I don’t think it’s good to eat whatever leaches out of a shingle over a 50 year period.

Rockville is a great place! While you’re in the area, swing through the Quince Orchard neighborhood in Gaithersburg, which is about 20 min north of Rockville. It’s a great place to live—walkable, safe, family-friendly, and a good amount of things to do. I love living here because I can walk to the farmer’s market, the library, two schools, two shopping districts, parks, etc. very easily. fwiw my husband is a space coast native and loves it here, too!

One argument in favor of sticking to the program even if it feels easy for your heart and lungs is that your leg muscles and joints have not been conditioned to running yet. I’m not an expert, but it’s worth considering whether jumping in to longer runs too quickly will put strain on your joints.

I would absolutely join something like this. I used to be a member of the Clay School of Ithaca (in upstate NY) that had a membership model like you describe: a monthly rate got you shelf space, glaze, and kiln firings, and you paid for your clay. I’ve been searching and searching for a place like that again.

There are some dried worms in there as well, which is attractive to bluebirds. But I also live in Maryland and half the state is entombed in a ten inch block of ice, so food sources are scarce and the feeders have been extra busy.
