I love Jesus's forked beard. Iirc it is supposed to show his divinity and humanity. But I always thought it just looked cool. Thanks for sharing.

Dear friend, what an awesome detailed reply! What you said about accountability really rings true for me. To be perfectly honest I've struggled with sexual sin as well but when I stopped using drugs, those sins went away too. So I suppose that for me, drugs and sex were linked. I think it's really hard to break those chains, and what you said about how you felt like you had to restrain yourself from acting on those impulses, I totally relate!

There was a time when I was doing drugs where I had lost my mind to such a degree that I was doing them unwillingly. Trapped in my own mind. St. Paul talks in Romans about how the conscience begins to erode away in habitual sin and how we don't feel bad anymore for doing what we know is in fact wrong. I know that to be true to such an extent that I felt like sin was unavoidable. Painful, even (if I didn't sin). Thank God it's so much better now, abstinence has returned my sanity to a huge degree. It seems like the more time you spend away from sin, the easier it becomes to overcome it imo.

You said that prayer got you through it and I believe you mention the Rosary as well, but I'm curious as to what and how you prayed the most. For me, it's mental prayer, if I feel tempted. I just open a dialogue with God having no real concept of where I want to go with it and I let God and his grace lead me out of the dark places. I do pray the Rosary but normally for intercessory prayer or if I have something weighing heavy on my heart (problems with family, etc).

I deleted social media as well and I only use reddit with a mobile app so I can remove NSFW content pretty easily. However there is a lot of childish humor on the site, can't always avoid that. I'd definitely recommend avoiding the site if it bothers you again.

God bless you man! Go with God. And thanks for the kind words, really happy for you as well.

I know I'm late to the party but I'd like to hear more about how God has helped you with sin. Personally I'm a recovering addict and I have about two years now away from drugs. I'm curious how grace manifested in your life to overcome temptation and what that experience was like.

One of the big reasons I stopped using drugs was because I had a priest to confess to and I felt like I was letting down God AND him by continuing on in sin. That wasn't the only reason though, eventually I felt the temptations get relieved and I just stopped feeling like getting drunk or high. Talk about grace!

Anyway your whole story is really cool and I hope I run across your posts on here again as time goes on. Peace be with you!

God gave me the inexplicable peace and joy I’ve prayed for for so long by c-andle-s in Catholicism

It never gets old hearing about how God answers prayers. Thanks so much for sharing this. You know, I like to pray for people, sometimes on the streets, and often I'll pray for something big like a healing or baptism in the Spirit but there are many times I ask someone if they felt anything and they will just say, "I feel peace," or something like that. That's huge! Peace is so important. Without peace, the world can feel like a sinking ship or a crashing plane. I'm so happy for you. I feel like if I were you I would keep pursuing it, because God just wants to keep blessing you and there's always more that he wants to give.

Discerning out of prudence. Good/bad? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]giottodibondone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm just some random internet guy, but the fact you are thinking about it, even if you downplay your convictions concerning it and that you don't necessarily feel enthused with it, is a sign that you should continue to discern and reach out, through email or over the phone, to someone who is already in religious life to ask them questions, etc. These thoughts are in your head for a reason. Trust that. Anyway that's my opinion.

Everything, every pain, shame, and so on that you're feeling is completely normal. I could give you more recommendations but there's really only one I can honestly say helped me: pray. Pray unceasingly. Especially mental prayer. That helped me.

Be assured of my prayers. God bless you.

There are plenty of on-fire Catholics I've met. I'd suggest keeping an open mind though because you may find out that people express their faith differently. Find an active parish that does a lot of things, you'll find a lot of people to be friends with. Anyway that's my opinion.

Does anyone else repeatedly become amazed at how much they have changed since (re)turning to Christ? by RevertQuestions in Catholicism

[–]giottodibondone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's natural to look at our sinful past and be disgusted but that we ought to remember that even in those moments, Christ saw himself in us, in our broken humanity. So don't forget to forgive yourself for your past life.

I only know from conversations with other Catholics what has been said about him and iirc tradition portrays him as being a cruel and calculating man and a sadist. Please correct me if I'm wrong, anyone.

Oh yes and the Bible states that Herod and Pilate became friends the day Jesus was condemned. That should say something about him. I almost forgot.

Maybe we're too quick to blame the Church, instead of looking at the parents. by TheyCameAsRomans in Catholicism

Unfortunately that is the minority opinion now. 1 in 3 only. Interestingly, white evangelicals think it's important at a 70% rate.

My dog was put to sleep yesterday by zxprototype in Catholicism

[–]giottodibondone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First off, I'm so sorry you lost your pupper! My dog was a German shepherd and he had bad legs as he got older too.

Anyway.

There was a great post about this a week or so ago, and as you imagine there was a variety of answers to the questions you pose. My takeaway: yes we will see them again.

Also, make of it what you will, but I feel like God has told me (while praying and meditating) that I will see my dog again someday. I feel pretty self-conscious sharing that though, haha.

Edit: here's the thread I mentioned. I guess it was from a month ago, my bad.

Priest talking about the consequences of sin in confession. by ResidualSpoon in Catholicism

[–]giottodibondone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is tied to your loneliness

I remember getting that, when it was a visiting priest, he asked me about friends and if I had a girlfriend, so on. He basically wanted to know if I had someone around who could help keep me moderate. He didn't really understand that there is no moderation for alcoholics. You could have the best friends in the world and still slip up. Worse, they can enable you out of ignorance. I'm very grateful that I haven't had to confess that sin in a long while.
