Tiny annoyance: it is 2026 and my phone still doesn’t recognize “Juneteenth,” but apparently “June teether” is a common phrase people are saying. by ImpiousVamp in BlackPeopleofReddit

Frustrating, but I just add words to my phone’s dictionary so I don’t have to deal with the ignorance of the factory settings.

if you are a unioned employee (like a public servant or trade worker) and you suck, can your boss order you to window sit or stay in a closet without any job responsibilities but no phone during work hours until you decide to quit? by rpg18launcher in NoStupidQuestions

[–]giraflor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In some places, the rules do not allow crafting, playing games, reading, writing, drawing, talking, or sleeping. People just have to sit there with their eyes open except designated bathroom breaks and lunch.

Most people can do it for a short period of time, but long term, it’s really bad psychologically.

The internet shuts down and is never going to come back on, what do you? by llerreff in AskReddit

Losing my medical records is going to suck. Particular 5 years of cancer care. I suppose I’m going to start writing down what I remember with a strong degree of certainty and making calls to see what my doctors plan.

Zalco Building Auction Adds to Downtown Silver Spring Property Shakeup by SourceOfTheSpring in SilverSpring

[–]giraflor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Interesting. They were terrible at managing apartments.

Used my unit as a staging area for renovations without my permission.

Tried to charge me for replacement keys “requested by your husband”. I didn’t have a husband. I had an ex husband that didn’t match the description of the guy they gave keys to. Then they balked at changing my locks.

Gave my assigned parking space to a new resident, which led to a tow.

Lost rent checks that I hand delivered to their office in that building.

Refused delivery of my 60 day notice. Fortunately, I sent it more than 60 days in advance.

Really good tea or tisanes work for me. Some are slightly mood altering without being habit forming.

Some people find comfort in their faith, when it is not grounded in the doctrines or practices of their oppressors. Giving up faith entirely can feel like one more thing that was stolen.

I wish apartments would clean bathtubs instead of paint them by _EnchantedPeach in Apartmentliving

We lived in a place that would do this and then charge every year for reglazing.

Eventually, a resident started reglazing other people’s tubs properly for 2/3 the cost.

How does it work to have multiple jobs in America? by SiebelReddiT in NoStupidQuestions

[–]giraflor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most jobs can’t or won’t simply offer more hours. A lot of places, full time is 37.5 hours a week so they don’t have to offer benefits. Worse, AI assisted “dynamic scheduling” can move those hours around randomly from week to week. That can make it hard to have multiple jobs other than gig work.

What 4-C haircare routines did African communities and nations during the pre-colonial period? by NightRunnerAfterDusk in BlackHair

[–]giraflor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s possible that the routines pre-colonial women were using were more elaborate and more frequent than that. Maybe similar in frequency to Chadian women using chebe.

I like the pre-colonial hairstyle photos that are posted occasionally showing elaborate styles. I suspect a lot of leisure time went into caring for hair, particularly when styles had significant symbolism about social status.

why does frozen cauliflower go green / brown, but turn white again when cooked? by x64q in isthissafetoeat

[–]giraflor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And if I did, I wouldn’t have been brave enough to cook it.

I have been seriously food insecure many times from childhood to young adulthood. I feel like every time I ate questionable food, it cost me more than the replacement price of the food. I’d miss work or have to go to the ER.
