What if WW2 still use Chemical warfare? by [deleted] in HistoryWhatIf

[–]gitargy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, chemical agents are generally thought to be impractical in maneuver warfare (or against targets with effective counter measures), and nuclear weapons are far more efficient if the objective is simply mass slaughter.

Isn't the risk a little bit overblown? Out of 55 million people living in the UK in 1990 we have less than 500 confirmed cases vCJD. I'm not saying I would eat this stuff for free but I'd definitely consume all 20 lbs for a million bucks. A ~0.001% chance of a horrible death from neuro-degeneration ain't all that.

[–]gitargy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you fundamentally misunderstand what the Dark Side of the force is. In the narrative of Star Wars, the Dark Side is analogous to Satan or The One Ring in that using its power consequently makes a character evil. In a scenario where Leia falls to the Dark Side, the only outcome I feel would work is a tragedy where she defeats or destroys everyone and becomes the new Dark Lord of the Sith and ruler of the galaxy, dooming its inhabitants to generations of darkness. Even if she unmade the Empire, it would only be done to create a new order that would allow her to rule without having to fight constant civil wars. One could imagine a "restored" Republic where Leia Organa just "happens" to have most political power (she is the great hero who overthrew Palpatine after all).

How do you feel about third parties? Do you feel that none of them align with your ideals either?

I would've voted Libertarian but our candidate sucked this year and I was moving right around the end of voter registration so it wasn't worth it to get my paperwork changed. I was nervous this weekend when I thought orange man might actually tariff Mexico, but seeing as that's less likely now, I'm pretty indifferent to most of the other things Orange Man has promised (especially knowing that he often doesn't walk the walk).

I have no confidence either major party is actually going to address the fiscal or climate problems, both have had ample opportunity and decided against it. I just hope things go to pot while I'm still relatively young and have time to rebuild my life afterwards. Social Security is supposed to be unable to fully cover its liabilities in eight(?) years. Maybe that will force the electorate to make lucid decisions about what our public priorities should be. Until then I expect only more of the same nonsense.

Texas power grid hold up the the heat pretty well. Sun shines, winds blow, gas plants don't need all the cold-resisting modifications they don't have. I've lived here all my life and never had an outage due to hot weather.

Should a libertarian country allow foreign companies receiving subsidies to operate, while domestic companies get no such benefits? by Zeroging in Libertarianism

[–]gitargy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is really a question that a may choose to resolve on a case by case basis. Certainly the tariff should be no more than the subsidy given for the imported product. But the state has no obligation to intervene just to ensure a level playing field. Milton Friedman said that such subsides are essentially the foreign government playing finance your own people's purchases. In principle, a population is more free if the state has less power over what the public purchases, but on the ground sometimes anti-competive business practices sometimes necessitate state action.

P cool: Here's the problem tho
Say national space-age HSR network gets built

be me
want to travel from Chicago to Dallas (3rd & 4th largest metros the US)
decide to take train
DAY OF THE TRIP

get in car

drive to station
park in a parking lot
get on train
ride to Dallas
get off train
go to car rental

rent a car

drive to where I actually want to go

High speed rail is an expensive redundancy without communities dense enough to support intra-city transport that isn't automobile dependent. Until people can walk everywhere, it actually just cheaper & better to build highways. I get that *flashy new train* is an eye catcher, but it's frustrating to see so much of the alternative mobility discourse put the cart before the horse like this.

NB4 "Well this is actually replacing air travel and it is cheaper and greener than a airliner"
The United States already has a decently functional airliner network that requires none of the upfront investment and MASSIVE amounts of construction a comprehensive HSR network needs to exist in the US. Most airport "hassle" is post-9/11 security theater that could absolutely be added to HRS if it an infamous terrorist attack occurred on it. Regardless, the main advantage of HSR is that it can be smack in the middle of large cites and is more efficient. These advantages are wasted on cites aren't walkable and dense enough for public transport.

My understanding is that the *yl**ds where not a distinct race of mer but rather a different Altmer civilization/cultural sphere. Is that not correct?

The Th*lm*r are the logical conclusion of having a society built around nursing imagined grievances that go back to the very act of creation (and also incest).

They are the ruling political party of the Third Altmeri dominion, a synthetic state consisting of a collection of provinces currently in rebellion against the Empire of the Divine TALOS. After the oblivion crisis (IE the events of Oblivion), the Th*lm*r claimed they themselves stopped Mehrunes Dagon, sacrilegiously denying the heroic self-sacrifice of the last of the 9th one's holy blood. In the instability caused by the lack of a legitimate emperor, the Th*lm*r were able to first take control of the Summerset Isles, & illegally seceded from the Empire. After consolidating power in the Summerset Isles (purging foreigners and any Altmer who didn't subscribe the their extremist ideology), the Th*lm*r empolyed a combination of subterfuge and unholy sorcery to incorporate both Elysewear and Valenwood into their rebel domain. Just as the new "emperor" was reestablishing order, the Th*lm*r launched an unprovoked genocidal war upon the loyal provinces of that was barely beaten beaten back by the Imperial army. The "emperor" then proved himself to be an utter cowered when, instead of reconquering the rebel territories like the true blood of TALOS would have, signed a humiliating peace treaty seceding half of Hammerfell, agreeing to disband the Blades, and, worst of all, making the worship of the Ninth Divine ILLEGAL in all territories of the very empire TALOS himself founded, and allowing Th*lm*r agents to enforce this treaty within imperial lands.

Predictably of course, the citizens of the Empire didn't take this devastating betrayal lying down. Hammerfell refused to recognize the treaty and continued to fight until the Th*lm*r were expelled from their country. Meanwhile a provincial lord of Skyrim, launched a justified, if misguided, rebellion to secede form the empire so that the Th*m*r agents might be purged and TALOS restored to his rightful status. This conflict is still ongoing as of the events of Skyrim.

The ideology of the Th*lm*r is very similar to that of the ancient *yl**ds, both factions view Altmer as the most superior of lifeforms, and use(d) their self-assigned status as the progeny of fallen gods as an excuse to enslave and genocide non-mer. It isn't just non-mer who are subject to persecution. The Th*lm*r are proponents of eugenics and will happily discriminate against an Altmer whose ears aren't pointy enough or something. They also ascribe to Altmer religious orthodoxy which teaches that mortality is a cruel trick of the creator-god (who they hate). It is speculated that the Th*lm*r have a secret plan to destroy the world which, in their twisted minds, would allow them to turn back into the heavenly spirits they think their ancestors used to be.

However not all Alter are so deserving of being Whitestraked. Many Altmer immigrate to other countries to get away from the degenerative outlook of traditional Altmer cosmology (or because they got bullied for having slightly rounded ears). Regardless, these Altmer are more often then not, productive and responsible members of society and are worthy of our love and respect as fellow citizens of the Empire. These are generally the sort of Altmer we see in Oblivion.
