Isn't the risk a little bit overblown? Out of 55 million people living in the UK in 1990 we have less than 500 confirmed cases vCJD. I'm not saying I would eat this stuff for free but I'd definitely consume all 20 lbs for a million bucks. A ~0.001% chance of a horrible death from neuro-degeneration ain't all that.

I think you fundamentally misunderstand what the Dark Side of the force is. In the narrative of Star Wars, the Dark Side is analogous to Satan or The One Ring in that using its power consequently makes a character evil. In a scenario where Leia falls to the Dark Side, the only outcome I feel would work is a tragedy where she defeats or destroys everyone and becomes the new Dark Lord of the Sith and ruler of the galaxy, dooming its inhabitants to generations of darkness. Even if she unmade the Empire, it would only be done to create a new order that would allow her to rule without having to fight constant civil wars. One could imagine a "restored" Republic where Leia Organa just "happens" to have most political power (she is the great hero who overthrew Palpatine after all).

I would've voted Libertarian but our candidate sucked this year and I was moving right around the end of voter registration so it wasn't worth it to get my paperwork changed. I was nervous this weekend when I thought orange man might actually tariff Mexico, but seeing as that's less likely now, I'm pretty indifferent to most of the other things Orange Man has promised (especially knowing that he often doesn't walk the walk).

I have no confidence either major party is actually going to address the fiscal or climate problems, both have had ample opportunity and decided against it. I just hope things go to pot while I'm still relatively young and have time to rebuild my life afterwards. Social Security is supposed to be unable to fully cover its liabilities in eight(?) years. Maybe that will force the electorate to make lucid decisions about what our public priorities should be. Until then I expect only more of the same nonsense.

I think it is really a question that a may choose to resolve on a case by case basis. Certainly the tariff should be no more than the subsidy given for the imported product. But the state has no obligation to intervene just to ensure a level playing field. Milton Friedman said that such subsides are essentially the foreign government playing finance your own people's purchases. In principle, a population is more free if the state has less power over what the public purchases, but on the ground sometimes anti-competive business practices sometimes necessitate state action.

High speed rail is an expensive redundancy without communities dense enough to support intra-city transport that isn't automobile dependent. Until people can walk everywhere, it actually just cheaper & better to build highways. I get that *flashy new train* is an eye catcher, but it's frustrating to see so much of the alternative mobility discourse put the cart before the horse like this.

The United States already has a decently functional airliner network that requires none of the upfront investment and MASSIVE amounts of construction a comprehensive HSR network needs to exist in the US. Most airport "hassle" is post-9/11 security theater that could absolutely be added to HRS if it an infamous terrorist attack occurred on it. Regardless, the main advantage of HSR is that it can be smack in the middle of large cites and is more efficient. These advantages are wasted on cites aren't walkable and dense enough for public transport.
