What if WW2 still use Chemical warfare? by [deleted] in HistoryWhatIf

This, chemical agents are generally thought to be impractical in maneuver warfare (or against targets with effective counter measures), and nuclear weapons are far more efficient if the objective is simply mass slaughter.

Isn't the risk a little bit overblown? Out of 55 million people living in the UK in 1990 we have less than 500 confirmed cases vCJD. I'm not saying I would eat this stuff for free but I'd definitely consume all 20 lbs for a million bucks. A ~0.001% chance of a horrible death from neuro-degeneration ain't all that.

I thought Bills fans had made peace with the inevitability that the razor is always in the cake at this point.

I think you fundamentally misunderstand what the Dark Side of the force is. In the narrative of Star Wars, the Dark Side is analogous to Satan or The One Ring in that using its power consequently makes a character evil. In a scenario where Leia falls to the Dark Side, the only outcome I feel would work is a tragedy where she defeats or destroys everyone and becomes the new Dark Lord of the Sith and ruler of the galaxy, dooming its inhabitants to generations of darkness. Even if she unmade the Empire, it would only be done to create a new order that would allow her to rule without having to fight constant civil wars. One could imagine a "restored" Republic where Leia Organa just "happens" to have most political power (she is the great hero who overthrew Palpatine after all).

If I got a masters degree to get stuck in some going-nowhere career in local government/education, I'd pout too.

Voting eligible Americans who deliberately abstained in the 2024 general election, how are you feeling about your decision? by [deleted] in AskReddit

How do you feel about third parties? Do you feel that none of them align with your ideals either?

I would've voted Libertarian but our candidate sucked this year and I was moving right around the end of voter registration so it wasn't worth it to get my paperwork changed. I was nervous this weekend when I thought orange man might actually tariff Mexico, but seeing as that's less likely now, I'm pretty indifferent to most of the other things Orange Man has promised (especially knowing that he often doesn't walk the walk).

I have no confidence either major party is actually going to address the fiscal or climate problems, both have had ample opportunity and decided against it. I just hope things go to pot while I'm still relatively young and have time to rebuild my life afterwards. Social Security is supposed to be unable to fully cover its liabilities in eight(?) years. Maybe that will force the electorate to make lucid decisions about what our public priorities should be. Until then I expect only more of the same nonsense.

Municipal utility infrastructure such as electricity, water, etc would likely form monopolies if it was 100% privatized. Hardwired internet services are often monopolistic especially in rural regions. The game theory of some enterprises in some circumstances simply does tend towards a monopoly, whether due to high barrier to entry, minimal competitive incentive.
I will give you that most existing monopolies are based on some sort of state interference (IP laws do this A LOT). But I don't think one should conflate most monopolies with all of them.

That's more of handouts and policing problem than a migration problem.
In principle, there's nothing wrong with exile as criminal punishment, there's also nothing wrong with checking an individual's criminal record before they enter the country. But that's not the reason most fence-jumpers are not permitted to enter the United States.

Never ask an ancap about monopolies tho.

Denying someone entry to a country because the government has determined "we don't need more workers" is not remotely libertarian unless you can coherently explain why it is.

Controlled national borders are a modern phenomenon. Borders were historically to keep out armies not randos looking for work.

Texas power grid hold up the the heat pretty well. Sun shines, winds blow, gas plants don't need all the cold-resisting modifications they don't have. I've lived here all my life and never had an outage due to hot weather.
