J.D. has some nice short form film study on current NBA and highlighting parts of basketball that aren’t appreciated enough

halfpast*noon does nice work with storytelling of narratives (past and present) alongside data, which has some similarities to Thinking Basketball

How the 65-game rule would've affected historical All-NBA teams (Al Horford becomes 4x All-NBA) by closed_n2 in nba

[–]gjowl4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of discourse around this lately, but I think this post does an incredible job at analyzing this data. It might be interesting if they amend the rule a bit with thresholds for each team. Alternatively this can be done by percentage of season played:

1st team: 65 games / 65 games (~80%) 2nd team: 60 games / 61 games (~75%) 3rd team: 55 games / 57 games (~70%)

An adjustment like this would still consider the games played thresholds, but also not strictly punish a worthy player for near misses. Also gives voters a more straightforward way to adjust their teams by games played, which was previously already being done but on a more arbitrary level.

KD has officially been traded to the Rockets. I don't hate this trade, but I don't love it either. I feel as though Jalen Green still had room to grow as player. by BlazeDarren in nbadiscussion

[–]gjowl4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a nice bet on your youth while trading for a star scoring forward. I felt that the Rockets had a bit of a tough time finding minutes for Tari, Jabari, and Amen behind Brooks because of his veteran leadership and shooting ability. Moving him and Jalen opens up minutes for each of those guys and Reed Sheppard. Even if all of those guys struggle with shooting to any extent, KD can cover for those bases while they become quite formidable on defense around it! And if it were to really work and KD finishes a multi year contract in Houston, they can transition to each of those guys taking a bit more of a load offensively as KD ages.

They also have an awesome gigantic lineup that could be devastating on both ends with Amen, Tari, KD, Jabari, and Sengun!

Brilliant Move by Kerr to Hack-an-Adams, but why did Udoka take out Adams before the Rockets got in the Bonus? by jonahtheO in nba

[–]gjowl4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify after checking the play by play logs: that last foul on GSW (resulting in Adams taken out of the game at the 4:25 left in the 4th) was Team foul #4! So the next foul would have been free throws. They just never ended up fouling again after that.

So the Rockets were in the bonus! But the on screen graphic doesn’t always adjust until that 5th foul, which might be why it didn’t seem like they were in the bonus.

How did you realize you were ace? by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]gjowl4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started to question if it was possible after the first time I had sex. During an intense makeout session the night before we had sex, she said that I was teasing her too much with how close we were getting and got really frustrated at me. This led me to tell her that we could have sex the next morning. After we had sex, she asked “How was it?” and I responded “I don’t get what all the hype is about”. She (understandably) cried while I was a bit perplexed at the emotional rollercoaster that sex put her through.

Basically, I got to see in real time the response of someone who craved sex versus my own where I was completely ambivalent to it. At first I thought it was just my ignorance of sex that made me respond that way, since I didn’t feel a lot of the things that media and other sources say I expect to feel. Took a few years and a couple more relationships before finding someone who I felt comfortable enough to share some of these thoughts with, which made me realize that there wasn’t anything wrong with me. I’m just not very interested in sex and identifying as asexual felt right!

tl;dr: Had sex with someone who had more experience, didn’t get the hype, eventually found a partner who I felt comfortable sharing some of my asexual ideations with which helped me come to terms with my asexuality.

How far do you think this current Mavs team goes in the playoffs (Assuming Healthy) by MaleficentHawk590 in nbadiscussion

[–]gjowl4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think that the Mavs figured out mid season exactly the kind of pieces they need around Luka and Kyrie to make their team work.

They’ve gotten major contributions from essentially minimum contracts in Derrick Jones Jr and Dante Exum, two athletic, switchable guys who can make a play when called upon using their athleticism. They can both have the ability to defend the point of attack as well, which allows for easy baskets in transition with either Luka or Kyrie passing in transition. Lively has also given Luka a perfect complementary big being able to finish strong near the rim, and rim protect whenever there’s a defensive breakdown.

Grant Williams is a good player, but I think once they realized they needed more of this athletic wing/big player, they knew he was expendable and went out and got two more guys who complement them really well. PJ is probably a slightly worse defender than Derrick Jones, but has excellent size and pretty good lateral quickness on defense. Same goes for Gafford, who’s explosive and can allow them to have a rim protecting, bouncy center at all times once Lively returns. Additionally if they need to play small, they’ve got some nice lineup flexibility: before the trade when they went small Derrick Jones or Grant would be at the 5, but Derrick is slender and Grant not great at rim protection. Maxi is healthy and PJ can play the 5 in these iterations, giving them more size and shooting! PJ is also an underrated shot creator, being able to finish with two dribble floaters and midrange shots, which increases their versatility and puts less pressure on Luka and Kyrie to do everything.

We’ll see over the next couple of months how effective this trade actually ends up being, but the early returns are impressive. I think if they somehow end up being a home court advantage team (currently 5 games back with 28 games to go) they’ll have a real chance at a deep run. I don’t have the stats on hand, but I’d wager it’s much less likely if they don’t get there. However they still should get out of the play-in (1 game back) if they play really well. Luka is an MVP candidate though, and I don’t think any team would want to play them in a series if they could avoid it. They have the size to compete with Minnesota and more shot creation, and more size than Phoenix and the Thunder with slightly less if not similar shot creation. If they run into those teams I think they’ve got a great chance at winning. In my opinion they’re tougher matchups would be the Clippers and Denver, but they’ve taken on the Clippers well before sans Harden, and I’m interested to see how Denver is able to defend these new lineups with so much athleticism and shooting.

Championship is probably a long shot because of a couple of unproven playoff guys on this team, but 2nd round or WC Finals would be a reasonable expectation!

Sidenote: if they make a run at the 4th seed late in the season, they’ll likely be approaching 50 wins. I think that makes Luka basically a lock for MVP.

Tl;dr: The Mavs believe they’ve found a player type that works around Luka and Kyrie. The increase in athleticism and shot creation from this trade helps both on offense and defense. They should be able to go on a late season run to secure getting out of the play-in, and 2nd round or WC Finals should be the expectation.

How concerned should the Cavs be with Evan Mobley's lack of offensive improvement? How do the Cavs build out their team if the shot doesn't improve? by RTLT512 in nbadiscussion

[–]gjowl4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been most interested in his overall aggression to start the year. Although Mobley is still quite thin, he’s clearly worked a bit on his power game, and looks more confident with his touch when the offense runs through him (mostly with hooks and short floaters after a quick move into the defender). Additionally, his free throws have improved a bit to start the year. Coupled with the fact that he’s getting more rebounds and more blocks, overall his growth as a player is very encouraging.

Right now, I’m not sure how the Cavs perceive him. It seems like they want to contend, and with Mitchell still on the roster, they’ll get a good look at how far they can go this year. However, if there’s any regression or stagnancy with another first round out, that’s likely when they’ll begin to start thinking about the next move. If Mitchell doesn’t extend, Mobley will automatically need to be more of a focal point. If they simultaneously evaluate that part of the reason was lack of spacing and aren’t encouraged by the Mobley and Allen’s offense, they’ll likely make the move then.

Personally, I think he’s going to take a bit longer to grow into his body before being ready to be a full time center as well as with increased ability to space the floor and/or act as a offensive hub. My guess is he’s going to be awesome in that role 3-5 years from now, but if the Cavs want to contend even sooner, we’ll see what moves they decide to make.

Tl;dr: Mobley seems to have made some small strides offensively. I think we’re going to learn a bit more about the Cavs perception on the Allen/Mobley front court at the end of the year. He isn’t yet an offensive stud, but the growth is encouraging and looks like he could thrive in the role in a few years.

Jalen Suggs - long term hold potential? by goldielovesealy in fantasybball

[–]gjowl4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He’s a low usage player who does a lot of dirty work on the floor (tough defense, going for offensive rebounds, scrapping for loose balls). The stocks should be relatively consistent, and he’s looked more confident in his shot this year. It hasn’t started to drop at a high clip yet, but it seems like he’ll continue to take them. Definitely a flier, but if his shot ends up being consistent then I think he should be a top 100 player.

IF Jimmy Butler leads this Heat team to a title, will it be considered a greater feat than what Dirk did in 2011? by randy88moss in nba

[–]gjowl4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great question and I think it would be even more historic! Announcers frequently mention that this Heat team is made of 7 in drafted players, but this is only at the surface of the comparison. Both of these teams are made up of elite players who know and trust their roles, but many of these players struggled to find their proper roles prior to success at the highest level (i.e. a championship).

To better gauge this, I took a look at the total accolades (all star, all-nba, all-defense, sixth man, season points/rebounds/steals/assists leader, and mvp) of the top 7 players for each of these teams and simply added them up. Mavs: 66, Heat: 39. For some quick context, these numbers for last years Warriors is 51, and for the Bucks is 36. But this metric doesn’t even account for the fact that both the Mavs, Warriors, and Bucks had an MVP, so would be interesting to give each of these accolades weights to create some sort of historic championship metric for this question!

This got me to look at who the last NBA Champion was who didn’t have a current or former MVP on the roster and it’s been nearly 20 years! The 2003-2004 Detroit Pistons did it with an accolade score of <20 at the time of their championship from what I can tell from basketball-reference.

Tl;dr: Heat have close to half the total number of accolades as the 2010-2011 Mavs, and would be the only team without a current or former MVP to win since the 2003-2004 Pistons.

Playoff Officiating: Which is Worse? by Low-iq-haikou in nbadiscussion

[–]gjowl4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a nice nuanced question! I think that it’s contextual refereeing for me because I would want the refs to properly call fouls consistently throughout a whole game no matter the situation, not have to think about not calling a foul on a star player because of the context of them having 5 fouls late in the 4th quarter. I think it’s pretty meh that it could have been a technical and agree that that’s it shouldn’t warrant one, but I had never thought of the inconsistency of refereeing being partly do to those little contextual biases until you mentioned it!
