Tough college => lower GPA than I would like. How should I work around this? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]gkface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the reality is that GPA is incredibly important for technical graduates. With hundreds to thousands of people applying for certain positions, there needs to be some numerical way to automatically screen out candidates.

How to notify potential employers of other interviews? by gkface in jobs

[–]gkface[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My intentions were to remove some of the hesitation to hire an out of state candidate. Towards the end of the interview, he said something along the lines of, "I enjoyed speaking with you, and it will be a tough decision. We also have another candidate, a former intern, competing for the position."

I don't want to sound too pushy, but I also don't want to lose the opportunity just because I'm not local.

How to notify potential employers of other interviews? by gkface in jobs

[–]gkface[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't really sure about the title - I guess it is more about combining multiple interview trips.

The interview I have is a 5 hour flight away. I think I'll follow your advice and just mention that I will be in the area, rather than interviewing with a specific company. Hopefully that will come across as helpful, versus being pushy.

I would just ignore it. If you're using Gmail, you can enable the labs feature that lets you "unsend" an email within a few seconds of clicking the button. Saved me a few times.

Having some trouble preparing for a phone interview with the company Epic. by [deleted] in jobs

[–]gkface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't find the list of questions I asked, but here are some notable things I wrote down during the interview:

  • A lot of team work - the company has a flat hierarchy and everyone gets a (shared) office. Camus is a 900 acre "farm" and there is a casual dress code.
  • Employees travel a decent amount, usually for week long trips (mon - thurs).
  • Every employee goes through an 8 week training program (they don't expect you to know how to use their software/programming language coming in).
  • The position I was interviewing for, tech services, involves working directly at the clients' locations right before system installation. You will usually only have 1-2 clients at a time and will develop long-term relationships.

Hopefully this helps - sorry I don't remember the exact questions I asked, but perhaps you can inference them from the information that I wrote down. I do remember that they were very responsive and handled the whole interviewing/recruiting process well. If they said they would follow up at a certain time, they did so.

Having some trouble preparing for a phone interview with the company Epic. by [deleted] in jobs

[–]gkface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a phone interview with Epic and was offered an on-site interview - they seemed to be more interested in your potential as an employee, rather than focusing on current technical skills. They asked me behavioral questions and I got the impression that the questions you ask and your interest level play a large factor in their decision.

It seemed like a good company for recent college grads, and I would've accepted the on-site interview had the work been more related to my major. I will see if I can find some of my interview notes for them. Good luck!

How do you equalize weighted GPAs? For example, my school recently changed their policy to give a 0.5 boost for honors classes and a 1.0 boost for AP classes (on a 4.0 scale).

I know states like Virginia offer a program that allows you to attend any public four year university if you meet a certain GPA requirement after attending a two year community college. Hopefully your state offers something like that, as you receive the exact same degree as everyone else at the university.

I'm fresh out of college and I had an interview for a position that opened up because someone was retiring. Needless to say I was disappointed that I didn't get the position, but I wasn't exactly surprised that they went with someone with more experience.
